April 3, 2000ObituariesJOHN J. JACKOVIAK, 90, of Freesoil, died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. He was born March 24, 1910, in Chicago, Ill. Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee; a Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Freesoil; burial will follow in the church cemetery. Karen Sue Staley Died March 31, 2000 WARREN - Karen Sue Staley, 53, of Warren, formerly of Interlochen, died Monday at St. John's Hospital-Macomb in Warren. Born Jan. 6, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of Gelena Wetherbee and Robert Kalina. On June 19, 1982, she married Glenn Staley. A homemaker, Karen loved being a mom and grandma. She enjoyed Elvis Presley, crocheting, picking mushrooms and assisting her husband in his hunting endeavors. Survivors include her husband; children, Robert (Lisa) Coleman, Michael (Sallyann) Peters, and Joseph (Sally) Peters; her mother; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the David J. Wysocki Funeral Home in Warren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be private. photo Mary E. Wehr Died April 1, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Mary E. Wehr, 84, of Traverse City, died Saturday at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born May 6, 1915, in Harvey, Ill., she was the daughter of Elva (Stemen) and Don Allen. On June 28, 1942, in Chicago, Ill., she married Henry W. Wehr Jr. A retired elementary school teacher, Mary was a former resident of Green Valley, Ariz., where she was a member of Green Valley Presbyterian Church. She volunteered her time helping senior citizens who were ill or lost a spouse or needed care in some way. She and her sister had often volunteered at elder hostels and she and her husband would spend several weeks each summer helping out at an Indian school in Phoenix. Mary belonged to a bridge club, was an assistant instructor in ballroom dancing and enjoyed square dancing. She loved to garden in her earlier years and since her childhood had spent summers at Torch Lake. Her greatest enjoyment in life was teaching. She had been a resident of Traverse City since 1998. Survivors include her husband; sons, Michael (Pamela) Wehr of Hancock, Paul (Beverly) Wehr of Tokyo, Japan, and Don (Debbie) Wehr of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren, Heidi, Jonathan, Raymond, and Candace; and a sister, Jeanne Templin of Elk Rapids. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Don C. Allen and Thelma Cantrell. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Green Valley, Ariz. Inurnment will be in Green Valley Presbyterian Church Columbarium. Memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimer's and Related Diseases Foundation. |
