Dinger, 78, of Muskegon, died Monday at a Muskegon hospital following a long illness. Born Oct. 10, 1921, in Grand Traverse County, Luella lived most of her life in Muskegon. The former Luella M. Cotton married Robert H. Dinger in Buckley on Feb. 12, 1941. He preceded her in death on June 15, 1973. Luella was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and had been employed at Misco for 25 years until her retirement. She is survived by her daughter, Martha (Dewey) Bringedahl of Muskegon; one son, Larry (Kim) White of Muskegon; a sister, Gladys Moon of Sherman; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James R. Dinger, who was killed in action during the Vietnam Conflict in 1966; and a brother, Elmer Cotton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Lee Funeral Home in Muskegon Heights. Born Aug. 9, 1941, in Taylor, she was a retired nurse's assistant. Evelyn enjoyed crafts, cross-stitch and gardening. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Her family loves her and will miss her dearly. She is survived by two sons, Dale (Cheryl) Addington of Cleremont, Fla. and Michael Gillespie of Benzie; a daughter, Rachel Wilcox of Traverse City; seven grandchildren; a sister, Betty (Daniel) Shimel of Rochester Hills; a cousin, Barbara Lamb of Howell; and a niece, Sandra Jester of Benzie. Burial will be in Homestead Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to a charity of one's choice in Evelyn's name. Ernest W. Gutzka Died April 3, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Ernest W. Gutzka, 81, of Traverse City, died Monday at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born June 28, 1918, in Traverse City, he was the son of William and Eda (Reidel) Gutzka. On June 15, 1942, in Traverse City, he married the former Beatta Riggs. A lifelong resident of Traverse City, Ernest was a farmer and also worked at the Traverse City Iron Works. He farmed with horses until 1994, enjoyed dancing and playing euchre. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by five children, Marlin (Carolyn) Gutzka, Ernest (Vivian) Gutzka, Darlene (John) Treadwell, Marcia (Ron) Lautner and Penny (Dan DeVincent) Pinkowski - all of Traverse City; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one niece. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatta; parents; three siblings in infancy; a daughter, Bonnie, at 3 months; a grandson, Jeff Lautner; and a sister, Hazel Keaton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Brigid Ellen (Delaney) McGrath Died April 1, 2000 KINGSLEY - Brigid Ellen (Delaney) McGrath of Kingsley passed away Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born Aug. 12, 1958, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Emmett Delaney and Patricia (Coonan) Delaney. An avid homemaker, she enjoyed all aspects of cooking and beyond. Brigid was an active member of the Paradise Eagles of Kingsley. The turtle was a symbol given to Brigid for her desire to take life slow, savor and enjoy it. Watching the birds and squirrels that came to her porch gave her much joy and with a sprint in her step and a point of her finger she would give a name to all her favorites. Her love of life was known to all who knew her as she was always giving to others. She is survived in death by her fianc‚, Bill Vance of Kingsley; her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia, 23, and Kurt Schultz of Grand Rapids; her daughter, Kristen McGrath, 18; her son William "Billy" McGrath, 15, of Kingsley; her brothers, Dennis Delaney, Brian (Mary Jo) Delaney, Sean (Barb) Delaney, and Timothy (Michelle) Delaney; and several nieces and nephews. Norval 'Norm' Hubbell Died April 4, 2000 ELK RAPIDS - Norval "Norm" Hubbell, 70, of Elk Rapids, passed away Tuesday at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Born July 26, 1929, in Torch Lake Township, he was the son of Percy and Carolina (Russell) Hubbell. On Jan. 16, 1954, in Kewadin, he married the former Barbara Ryals, who preceded him in death in 1988. Norm was a resident of this area his entire life, with the exception of when he resided in Florida from 1976 to 1990. He was employed as a tire repair technician with Zupin Oil and Bob Cole Tire in Elk Rapids. He served with the Elk Rapids Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years and was an avid high school sports fan. He is survived by four sons, Gary Hubbell of Kewadin, Russell Hubbell of South Holland, Ill., Harold Hubbell of Orlando, Fla. and Jody Hubbell of Mission Viejo, Calif.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold (Carol) Hubbell of Elk Rapids and Nile (Joan) Hubbell of Dewitt; and a special friend, Lois Bratschi of Elk Rapids. Patricia K. Pagliarini Died April 4, 2000 GRAND BLANC - Patricia K. Pagliarini, 75, of Grand Blanc, died Tuesday at Hurley Hospital in Flint. Born Dec. 9, 1924, in Niles, she was the daughter of William J. and Glenna M. (Lowing) Kiefer. A longtime resident of Grand Blanc, Patricia grew up in Traverse City and had been a member of First Congregational Church. For many years she was an instructor of Psychiatric Nursing at Mott Community College in Flint, as well as at the University of Michigan. She was also a counselor at Mott Community College. She is survived by her former husband, Fred Pagliarini of Flint; sister, Barbara (James) Thompson of Traverse City; three nephews, William (Pamela) Thompson of Shelby Township, Robert (Patricia) Thompson of Traverse City and Timothy (Lorrie) Thompson of Ionia; and ten great-nieces and great-nephews. Chapin Died April 4, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - James F. Chapin, 81, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at his home. Jim was born Jan. 11, 1919, in Lansing. He was the son of James and Clara (Vaillancourt) Chapin. In 1945, in Lansing, he married the former Dorothy Rogers, who preceded him in death in 1998. Jim was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Asian-Pacific Theater. He moved to Traverse City from Lansing in 1948. He was employed as a claims adjuster for Consumers Power Company, retiring in the mid 1980's. Jim was a member of the Traverse City Elks Lodge No. 323, VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780 and a life member of the Traverse City Masonic Lodge No. 222. He enjoyed wood working, golfing, bowling and deer hunting. He is survived by four sisters, Evelyn Metz of Estero, Fla., Mildred (Chester) Noble of Traverse City, Margaret Groves of Traverse City and Alice (Russell) Hagerman of Lansing and Palmetto, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Leroy and Andrew. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Dingeman, 68, of Detroit, died suddenly Wednesday at his residence in Detroit. Born Jan. 6, 1932, in Detroit, he was the son of the late Harry and Jean Dingeman. He was a proprietor of Dingeman Incentives since 1960. David was a volunteer with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He was an active member of Annunciation Church in Detroit, Indian Village Neighborhood Association and River House Apartment Board. He is survived by two brothers, John H. Dingeman of Traverse City and R. Paul (Mary Ellen) Dingeman of St. Clair; nephews and niece, Daniel, Michael and Mary Kathleen; and great-nephews and great-niece, Jack, Max and Hope. She is survived by three sisters, Barbara Galarowic and Serena (James) Forgrave - both of Goetzville, and Paula (James) Badder of Brimley; a brother, Benedict (Jerri) Galarowic of Goetzville; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Sharolyn Jeanette Bowen Died April 6, 2000 SUTTONS BAY - Sharolyn Jeanette Bowen, 14, of Suttons Bay, died Thursday at her home. Born Sept. 14, 1985, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Paul and Angela (Bowen) McGrath. Sharolyn was an eighth grade student at Suttons Bay Middle School. Sharolyn played baseball and basketball and enjoyed all sports. She was a member of the Northport Indian Mission Church and attended Sunday school. She was an outgoing, humorous, young girl who participated in the Grand Traverse Band Youth Program, where she was a member. Sharolyn was granted a wish from Make A Wish Foundation and took her whole family to Disney World last summer. She is survived by her parents; eight brothers and sisters, Delia, Marlena, Wendi, Paula, Paul Jr., Mitchell, Anthony and Alexander; maternal grandparents, Robert (Delia) Bowen of Bay Mills; paternal grandmother, Lena McGrath of Suttons Bay; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Charles McGrath. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 8, and will continue until 9 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at the Medicine Lodge, 2300 Stallman Road in Suttons Bay. Ferris, 93, of the Traverse City area and formerly of the Detroit area, died Wednesday at Maple Valley Nursing Home in Maple City. Born Jan. 22, 1907, in Okemos, she was the daughter of Clair and Edna (McClure) Wilkins. On Dec. 24, 1933, in Detroit, she married T rett F. Ferris, who preceded her in death. Moneta lived in the Traverse City area for 12 years, coming from Detroit and Okemos. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Detroit and an art teacher for the Detroit Public Schools. Moneta enjoyed painting. She is survived by two sons, Robert (Lynn) Ferris of Traverse City and John (Debra) Ferris of Dixborough; four granddaughters, Stacie Georg of Frisco, Colo., Shellie (Rob) Tryon of Maple Grove, Minn., Wendie (Lance) Keiser and Amy Ferris - both of Denver; and four great-grandchildren, Courtney Georg of Celina, Ohio, Tara and Taylor Tryon of Maple Grove, Minn. and Mackenzie Keiser of Denver. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and a son, James Ferris. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at a later date in the Detroit area. Fordyce, beloved husband of Beth Hilbert, died Saturday, March 25, after a six month fight with cancer. Maurice was born in Detroit near Tiger Stadium, then moved with his parents while young to Cass City where he graduated from high school in 1940. Maurice was also a graduate of GM Tech. During World War II he was a pilot flying C46 and C47 transports. Among his accomplishments, in 1952 he redesigned the deck shuttle catapult strip on the HMS Forrestal carrier which had been used for World War II planes. He retired in 1985 after 31 years with Ford Motor Company. He began his career at Ford working with Interior Seat and trim on the Continental Mark II. Later he was a supervisor in body engineering working on forward car models. Everyone liked Maurice. In fact, for his retirement party the chairman tried in vain to find "roast" material, then decided there would be one person who could help. But when he asked Maurice's wife, she couldn't think of anything to needle him about either. His hobbies were fishing, golf, bowling, photography and playing bridge. He was a loving, understanding and responsible husband, father, neighbor and friend. Survivors include his wife, the former Beth Hilbert; daughter, Lyn Ella (Matthew) Watson; stepdaughter, Anita Prahl; grandsons, David (Jenny) Prahl and Mark (Donna) Prahl; granddaughter, Carrie (David) Friend; great-grandchildren, Chelsie, Evan, Jordan, Caitlin, Matthew, C.J., Bradley and Jeffrey. The only other survivors are Detroiter Dolly McCarter, a cousin and her children. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at noon, June 25, at his residence in Farmington Hills. Hubbell, 91, of Elk Rapids, died Thursday at Birchwood Nursing Center in Traverse City. Born Dec. 30, 1908, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Edgar and Mary (Mauslof) MacDonald. On Oct. 9, 1928, in Detroit, she married Ivan Hubbell. Evelyn lived in Elk Rapids all her adult life. She and her husband owned and operated Cherry Acres Fruit Farm in Elk Rapids for 50 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of The America's, Ladies of The Heart and a former member of the Rotary Anns. She is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Howard) Greilick of Traverse City and Joyce Hoopfer of Grand Rapids; two sons, Keith (Rosanne) Hubbell and Gary (Edna) Hubbell - both of Elk Rapids; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alta Hammerle of Traverse City. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ivan, in 1982; a brother; and a sister. Stanley Nicholas Wallin Died April 5, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Stanley Nicholas Wallin, 89, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born Sept. 25, 1911, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of Stanley and Anna Wallin. On April 19, 1937, in Lake Leelanau, he married Eva Plamondon. Stanley was a printer who was employed more than 65 years at the Traverse City Record-Eagle. He began his career in 1930 as an apprentice and later served as assistant foreman. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus - Grand Traverse Council No. 1213 and the Traverse City Elks Lodge No. 323. Stanley had also tended bar on the weekends at the Traverse City Eagles and Elks clubs. He enjoyed dancing polkas and waltzes. He belonged to St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City and liked to drive people to Mass on Sundays. Survivors include two sons, Allen S. Wallin of El Cajon, Calif. and John R. Wallin of Trabuco Canyon, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two nieces. Stanley was preceded in death by his wife, in 1994; parents; four sisters, Barbara, Josephine, Louise and Mary; and a brother, Frank. Private family serves are planned. Born Jan. 22, 1907, in Okemos, she was the daughter of Clair and Edna (McClure) Wilkins. On Dec. 24, 1933, in Detroit, she married Irett F. Ferris, who preceded her in death. Moneta lived in the Traverse City area for 12 years, coming from Detroit and Okemos. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Detroit and an art teacher for the Detroit Public Schools. Moneta enjoyed painting. On Oct. 18, 1946, in Grand Rapids, she was united in marriage with Barney Barber, who survives. Lorena had been a lifelong resident of the area, and for 33 years worked as a paraprofessional for the Rapid City and Kalkaska Public Schools. She also worked as office manager for Do-All Construction. She was a member of the Rapid City Church of Christ, where she served as a member of the church board. In 1987, she was the recipient of the Michigan 150 First Lady Award for Kalkaska County. She enjoyed reading crocheting, her family and serving as "mother" to many children besides her family. Terwilliger, 60, of Traverse City and formerly of Onekama, died at her home in the Old Mission Peninsula on Thursday. Trish was born in Mason on June 5, 1939, the daughter of Ralph S. and Edna B. (Hall) Adams. She was united in marriage on Sept. 3, 1960, to C.W. "Neil" Terwilliger at the MSU Alumni Chapel in East Lansing. A retired English and speech teacher, she had taught at Schafer High School in Southgate, Onekama High School and West Shore Community College. Trish graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor of art degree in language art, speech and theater, and a master of art in public speaking. Trish was past president of the Kaleva Women's Club, former treasurer of Onekama High School Board of Education, and former member of the Onekama Township Planning Commission. She was associated with the Ramsdell Theatre for 14 years, where she both acted and served as musical director. Trish had also been president, vice-president and secretary of the Manistee Civic Players. Many remember her roll as "Anna" in "The King and I." She sang with the Free Spirit in Manistee for several years. Along with acting and music, Trish enjoyed birdwatching and playing with her dogs. Trish is survived by her husband, Neil Terwilliger, of Traverse City; her son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Mary Terwilliger of Woodhaven; her grandchildren, Kelsey and Zachary; her sister, Alberta (Donald) Parks of Mason; her sister-in-law, Diane (Alan) Lakso of Bear Lake; and many nieces and nephews. Wehr Jr. A retired elementary school teacher, Mary was a former resident of Green Valley, Ariz., where she was a member of Green Valley Presbyterian Church. She volunteered her time helping senior citizens who were ill or lost a spouse or needed care in some way. She and her sister had often volunteered at elder hostels and she and her husband would spend several weeks each summer helping out at an Indian school in Phoenix. Mary belonged to a bridge club, was an assistant instructor in ballroom dancing and enjoyed square dancing. She loved to garden in her earlier years and since her childhood had spent summers at Torch Lake. Her greatest enjoyment in life was teaching. She had been a resident of Traverse City since 1998. Survivors include her husband; sons, Michael (Pamela) Wehr of Hancock, Paul (Beverly) Wehr of Tokyo, Japan, and Don (Debbie) Wehr of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren, Heidi, Jonathan, Raymond, and Candace; and a sister, Jeanne Templin of Elk Rapids. She was born Dec. 10, 1910, in Richmond, Ind., the daughter of William Stuart and Elinor (Piper) Bodwell, and had been a resident of Traverse City since moving here from Trumbull, Conn. in 1978. In June of 1956, she married Kingston Cady Smith in Northfield, Mass.; he preceded her in death on May 23, 1973. Ruth had been an engineer prior to her retirement and was a member of the Society of Women Engineers. She was also a member of the Republican Party. A member of Bethany Baptist Church, Ruth was also active in Right to Life, volunteered her time at WLJN where she was known as the weather lady, and enjoyed bird watching and white water canoeing. She also enjoyed animals and loved to read. Ruth is survived by her children, Ruth Glaspey of Traverse City, Nick (Barbara) Smith of Atmore, Ala. and Clint (Vivienne) Smith of Alexandria, Egypt; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was born July 21, 1922, in Muskegon, the son of John H. and Angie (Wormbrand) Stevens. Jack was a graduate of Muskegon High School and Tri-State College of Engineering in Angola, Ind. He served in the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army during World War II at Camp Murphy, Fla., and in Hawaii and Okinawa. On Aug. 19, 1943, he married Marva Banninga in Muskegon. In 1950, Jack and his family moved to Traverse City to join his father and brother in the Stevens Oil Co. which they operated for 28 years. He retired as president of the company in 1978. Jack was a charter member of Faith Reformed Church where he served in many capacities - elder, deacon, and Sunday school superintendent - chaired various committees and sang in the choir for 37 years. Wherever he was needed, Jack served. For six years he was a delegate to the General Program Council for the Reformed Church in America. He served as treasurer of Northern Michigan Classis for many years. He was often a delegate to classis and to General Synod. Serving the Lord was a main priority in Jack's life. He was a member of the Lions Club for many years and had served as its president. He was also a member of the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce and served on their board. Jack was also on the board of WIAA at Interlochen Arts Academy. Jack is survived by his wife, Marva; three sons, Ronald (Nancy) Stevens of Traverse City, Daniel (Carol) Stevens of Troy, and David (Susan) Stevens of Grand Rapids; six grandchildren, John, Andrew, Kristin, Karin, Sandra, and Nathan; a brother, Richard (Edna) Stevens of Traverse City; and numerous nieces and nephews. Andrews, 92, of Greenville, passed away early Saturday morning at Metron of Belding. Born July 5, 1907, she had worked as a surgical technician at Munson Hospital in Traverse City. During World War II she worked at Gibson Refrigerator Co. building gliders for the war effort. On July 22, 1929, in Elkhart, Ind., she married Vern Andrews who preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1993. Aleta was also preceded in death by three sons, Glenn Howard Andrews, an infant boy, and Colin D. Andrews, on Aug. 23, 1999; a daughter-in-law, Joan M. Andrews, on Dec. 28, 1996; two sisters, Florence Maxon and Helene Lush; and a brother, Wendell Thompson. Surviving are a daughter, Wilma (Ron) Stauffer of New Mexico; eight grandchildren, Brenda (Gary) Templar of Greenville, Mary (John) Knox of Caledonia, Cristie Dillingham of Texas; David and Robert Andrews - both of Greenville, Linda (Larry) Cuddington of Arizona, and Diane (David) Lash and Gloria (Roger) VanDenventer - both of Traverse City; 17 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Gerree Thompson of Dewitt. James Lindsey Rice Died April 7, 2000 BENZONIA - James Lindsey Rice, 92, of Benzonia, died Friday at The Maples - Benzonia County Medical Care Facility in Frankfort. He was born Nov. 3, 1907, in Joyfield Township, the son of James R. and Ella (Gorivan) Rice. A retired truck driver, James was also a driver for the Meals-On-Wheels program for many years and was a past manager of Heinze Trailer Park for some time. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. James is survived by four sons, Albert (Dorothy) Rice of Benzonia, Delbert (Joan) Rice of Lennon, Bernie (Carol) Rice of Burlington, Wis., and Michael (Angie) Rice of Cadillac; his brother, Douglas Rice of Benzonia; his sister, Margaret (Albert) Orr of Beulah; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. On June 19, 1930, James married Myrtle Worden who preceded him in death in 1999. He was also preceded in death by his brother, George Rice, and his sister, Alice Imogene Heinze. Thelma had inspired others during the past four years with her remarkable strength and courage in her battle with cancer. Born in Antrim County on May 29, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Rex and Sarah (Hounschell) Hughey. Thelma married Don Schepperley on March 3, 1943; the marriage began a lifetime of exciting, wonderful adventures. They lived in Ann Arbor, Grayling, Detroit, Davison and Midland before finally returning to Traverse City in 1975 where they owned American Drug and then the Prescription Shop. Thelma and Don enjoyed working together and traveling together. They spent several memorable winters in Arizona. Thelma loved flowers, especially African violets, which she enjoyed sharing with others. She also derived much enjoyment from Central United Methodist Church where she valued her many fellowship friends. Devoted to her family, Thelma is survived by her husband, Don; two daughters, Sharon Rainey of Jackson and Deborah (Frank) Nichols-Barski of Berwick, Pa.; and her two grandchildren, Christopher Rainey of Chelsea and Jodie Rainey of East Lansing. She is also survived by her two brothers, Leonard (Doris) Hughey of Mancelona and Charles (Millie) Hughey of Grand Rapids, along with several brothers- and sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Edith 'LaMoine' Kelderhouse Died April 9, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Edith "LaMoine" Kelderhouse, 89, of Traverse City, died Sunday at her home. Born Aug. 10, 1910, in Remus, she was the daughter of John W. and Harriet E. (Kidd) Norman. On May 29, 1947, in Traverse City, she married Floyd Kelderhouse. The youngest of five children, LaMoine was a lifelong resident of the northwestern lower peninsula. She graduated from Mesick High School in 1927 and from Wexford County Normal in 1931. A homemaker, she was a life member and past president of both the Eagles and the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries. LaMoine served several years as treasurer, two years as secretary, and two years as president of the Riverview Terrace Tenants Association. Left to mourn their loss are a son, Robert (Sharon) Kelderhouse of Traverse City; four grandsons, Robert Jr., Michael, and Dennis Kelderhouse and Benjamin (Nicole) Schneider; a granddaughter, Tina Schneider; two great-grandsons, Duston Drake and Garison Schneider; plus many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Joyce McDonnell Died April 7, 2000 PORTAGE - Joyce's life began August 1, 1921, in Hopkins, Mich. As a young girl she moved with her family to Jackson where she graduated from high school. On June 14, 1944, she married Bud McDonnell. They lived in several different parts of the country while Bud was in the military. They settled in Traverse City where she lived for 25 years. Later Joyce moved to Clearwater, Fla., where she lived for 10 years. During this time Joyce enjoyed interior decorating and also playing the organ. She came to the Kalamazoo area about 10 years ago to be closer to her sons, Doug McDonnell and his wife Pam of Portage and Gary McDonnell and his wife Lynn of Negaunee. Since she moved to this area she has cherished even more, the time she has been able to spend with her family including her grandchildren Travis, Alison and Anna. Four sisters and a brother preceded Joyce in death. Joyce died at her home Friday April 7, 2000. She moved there three years ago where she resided at The Cheyenne Place Retirement Center. Born April 13, 1911, in Ann Arbor, Mich., she was the daughter of Fitch and Ina (Burdan) Forsythe. She graduated from the University of Michigan School of Music in 1933 and married Carlysle O. Rogers on July 10, 1936. Virginia taught music for over 30 years in upstate New York and the Detroit Public Schools before retiring to Traverse City in 1973. She was a past president of the Trillium Garden Club and was an avid bridge player participating with numerous bridge groups. She taught piano and mentored many young people at Traverse Heights and Bertha Vos grade schools. "Ginny" was extremely active in the Traverse City community during her 23 years of residency. She enjoyed her life in Traverse City. She had many friends and was known for her terrific sense of humor and eagerness to bring people together. She loved to knit, read, garden and travel. She also enjoyed her membership in The First Congregational Church. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Art) Zapel of Colorado Springs; her son, W. Bruce (Joyce) Rogers of Traverse City, Mich.; a sister, Edith (Roy) Sandstrom of Sarasota, Fla.; her sister-in-law, Helen Forsythe of Winter Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren, Dawn and Tony Pisor, Michael (Teri) Rogers, Jennifer (Rick) Mau, and Sarah (Tim) Twinam; two nephews, Mark and Van Sandstrom; and seven great-grandchildren. Born July 21, 1952, in Mayfield Township, she was the daughter of Frank and Mable (Oyler) Bott. On Aug. 21, 1976, in Hannah, she married Joseph S. Wolf. Carolyn was a lifelong resident of this area. A licensed practical nurse, she was employed at Munson Medical Center in the emergency room for 15 years. She later worked in the medical procedures room for ten years. Carolyn was a 4-H leader with the Rickety Ranchers Livestock Club of Kingsley. She enjoyed many crafts including knitting, making creative memory books and Christmas ornaments. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her husband, Joseph; two sons, Justin Joseph and Jeremy Joseph - both at home; four brothers, Frank (Marylin) Bott of Kingsley, William (Nancy) of Grand Rapids, Owen (Judy) of Prospect Heights, Ill. and Ronald (Agnes) Bott of Kingsley; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. Klang, 86, of Traverse City and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 31, in Fort Lauderdale. Born Dec. 27, 1913, in Detroit, he was the son of John Henry and Katrina Ida (Groth) Klang. During the era of big bands he was a noted professional drummer, playing with the NBC studio band in New York City and several famous dance bands. Locally he enjoyed playing Dixieland style music with the Harry Hibbard Band. In recent years he enjoyed playing his banjo and guitar for family and friends. In 1940 he and his brother, Marvin, purchased the family flower business in Detroit and operated it until the late 1950's when John and his wife, Tresa, moved to Suttons Bay, Mich. In Suttons Bay they established Leelanau County's first florist business (Klang's Flowers & Gifts) which they operated until John's retirement in 1968. The Klangs were noted shuffleboard players competing in tournaments in Florida, Michigan and New Jersey. They were quick to recruit and teach new players. In 1998 the Traverse City Shuffleboard Club honored John and Tresa (Terri) by naming a court in their honor. John was also an avid boater, fisherman and duck hunter. He enjoyed professional football and basketball and was always ready to discuss recent games. He is survived by his wife, Tresa (Terri); son, Jack (Marilyn); grandchildren, Gregory (Sherry), Marjorie (Mark) Doherty; and several great-grandchildren all of Traverse City and Suttons Bay. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Marvin F. Klang. A family burial service has been held in Suttons Bay. McGovern Died April 12, 2000 FRANKFORT - Michael Daniel McGovern, formerly of Durand, and a resident of Frankfort for the past two years, died suddenly Wednesday evening at the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort at the age of 54. Michael was born on Nov. 12, 1945, in Flint, the son of Purcel James and Fern (Jeffs) McGovern. He was united in marriage to Marcia Tyler on Nov. 27, 1965, in Durand. Michael retired in 1998 after 30 years of employment with the General Motors Corporation. Upon his retirement he was working in the Quality Control Department. Michael was a charter member of the Durand Vernon Ambulance Service, a member of the UAW Local 659 of Flint and the Frankfort Eagles. He enjoyed fishing and golfing. Michael is survived by his wife, Marcia, of Frankfort; son, Jeff McGovern of Portage, Ind.; and two daughters, Chris (Dan) Aldridge of Frankfort and Michelle (Scott) Scripter of Durand. Born March 17, 1921, in Platte Township, he was the son of Robert and Catherine (Madagama) Bailey. A veteran of World War II, Clarence had served in the U.S. Army. In 1980, he retired from the C&O Railroad in Ludington, where he had worked as a seaman on the carferry for 33 years. Clarence was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and the Great Lakes Sled Dog Association. He had been an amateur and professional boxer, a dog sled racer, and a flag carrier at Pow Wows. He loved being outdoors, hunting, walking in the woods, and even weight lifting. Born July 20, 1932, in West Branch, he was the son of Otis and Isabel (Gilson) Couture. On June 20, 1959, in Harrison, he married the former Mary Karolyn Amble. Richard graduated from West Branch High School in 1950 and Michigan State University in 1954. He attended graduate studies at Michigan State University and the University of Washington in Seattle. He then attended Officers Training School for the U.S. Navy. He served as a civil engineer in the Seabees. Richard worked for the Antrim County Road Commission as a highway engineer from 1962 to 1967 and highway engineer manager from 1667 until his retirement in 1989. He then served as a board member from 1998 to February this year. Richard was a past charter member and past treasurer of the Mancelona Rotary Club. He was also a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona. He enjoyed working on his computer, yard work, gardening, woodworking and furniture making. Richard is survived by his wife, Karolyn Couture of Mancelona; three children, Marie (James) Snyder of Franconia, NH, Mark (Nilofer) Couture of Webster, NC and Steven (Maya) Couture of Mt. He was employed as a nurse attendant at the Traverse City State Hospital for 40 years, retiring in 1984. John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting. He also enjoyed needlepoint. Virginia Ellen Cook Died April 17, 2000 NORTHPORT - Virginia Ellen Cook, 71, of Northport, died Monday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. Perry served with the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II and was discharged as a sergeant. A resident of Traverse City since 1946, he had retired from Central States Building Movers. Perry was a life member of Cherryland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2780. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and bowling. He also liked listening to and watching baseball. Mollema, formerly of Owosso, died Sunday, at the Long-Term Care Unit at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort where she had been a resident since December of 1997. She was 84 years old. Gertrude was born on Aug. 25, 1915, the last of four children and the only daughter of Ward G. and Mary E. Cobb. She graduated from Owosso High School in 1933 and received her secretarial degree from Cleary College in Ypsilanti in 1935. Gertrude worked as a secretary for various firms and businesses in and around Owosso for most of her adult life. She spent her last 12 working years as secretary at Laingsburg High School before retiring in 1985. Before her final illness she enjoyed sewing and reading. But the parties and get-togethers with her large, extended family were her greatest joy. Gertrude is survived by her son, Andy, and daughter-in-law, Marti, of Frankfort; a brother, Robert Cobb of Marshall; sister-in-law, Meltha Cobb of Owosso; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, George and Donald. Services will be held at Jennings-Lyons Funeral Home, 520 W. Main St., Owosso. William Phillips Moulton Died April 11, 2000 WALKER - William "Bill" Moulton passed away at his residence in Walker as the result of coronary heart failure. He was given the last rites of the church by Father John, Catholic Chaplain of Spectrum East Hospital. At the time of his death, Bill was a senior loan officer for Consolidation Mortgage Co. in Grand Rapids. He was a lifelong member of St. Francis Catholic Church and attended school there until his senior year when he transferred to Central High School where he graduated with honors. He attended Marquette University and the University of Texas and Grand Valley State University. His interest in books, history, the arts, writing, ancient coins and antiquities began at an early age. In later years he was recognized as an expert in those particular subjects. His photographic memory enabled him to retain information and have instant recall. Bill was active in politics all his life. He wrote extensively for the Libertarian newspaper and was also a staunch volunteer for the Republican party. Bill was born Sept. 8, 1947, at Munson Hospital in Traverse City. He was lovingly raised by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Moulton, his adoptive parents. Bill is survived by his birth mother, Barbara M. (Phillips) Martin of Traverse City; half sister, Mignon (LaGro) Benenati of Goshen, Ind.; half sister, Patricia (LaGro) Stouder of South Lyon; half brother, Louis Christopher LaGro of Elgin, Ill.; aunt, Shirley (Phillips) Midling of Oroville, Calif.; cousin, Philip C. Smalley Died April 16, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Dudley Edson Smalley, 79, of Traverse City, died peacefully Sunday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born Feb. 23, 1921, in Ellsworth, he was the son of Albert and Ferna (Edson) Smalley. On Sept. 23, 1944, in Newark, Ohio, he married Catherine Iacobellis; she died in 1998. A resident of Traverse City since 1979, Dudley was a engineer for Union Oil Company of California-Chicago refinery for many years. He retired in 1979 at the age of 58. He served in the Pacific theatre during World War II. Dudley was a member of Traverse City Elks Lodge No. 323, the DAV and the Marine Corps League and served as a past commander of the American Legion in Downers Grove, Ill. Dudley was a member of many board of directors in the community. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and baked excellent pies. Survivors include a daughter, Janet Smalley Frye of Charlevoix; a son, Mark Smalley of Traverse City; two brothers, William (Margaret) Smalley of Manton and Robert (Arlene) Smalley of Charlevoix; a sister, Mary Jane (Anton) Nicola of Traverse City; a granddaughter, Angela (Steve) Engle of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews. Cain was granted eternal peace on the morning of April 17, 2000. Her passing was both quiet and comfortable. Lucina was born on Nov. 8, 1910, in the rural farming community of Deerfield. She was one of six children born to James and Mary Close. In 1930, she moved with her husband, Harold G. Cain, to a depression era Detroit. Some ten years later, she moved with her husband and her son, Richard E. Cain, to the more prosperous Dearborn. During her nearly 40 years as a Dearborn resident, Lucina served effectively with various social agencies and causes. Her favorite social cause was the American Cancer Society. She was among the founders and initial supporters of the Church of Divine Child in Dearborn. Lucina was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sisters; and her husband, Harold. She is survived by her son, Richard; his wife, Mary Lou; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. It is requested that no flowers be sent, but, rather that any memorials be sent, in respectful thanks, to the Grand Traverse Pavilions where she has resided for several years. She retired from WLDR-FM radio station after 32 years of employment in June of 1999. She was an active member of Central United Methodist Church, the Yokefellow No. 8 and served as an usher at the early service. Barbara was a person who loved life, who touched deeply all who came in contact with her and she was cherished by all who knew her. Barbara enjoyed western style square dancing and was editor of the Square Em 'Up' Magazine for a number of years. She also enjoyed reading and traveling. Frank was born May 7, 1908, in Wollock, Pa., the son of the late Frank Sr. and Amelia (Drobeck) Bishoff. He had resided in Grawn since 1968, coming from Flint. Frank married the former Eva M. Thomas on Nov. 4, 1933, in Flint. She preceded him in death on April 1, 1989. Frank was employed with GM's Fisher Body 1 for 40 years, retiring in 1968. Suzanne graduated from high school at Elizabeth City, N.C., attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Mich., and graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She did her graduate work at the University of Oregon. Suzanne was a much loved teacher by her students and fellow faculty members for 30 years. She taught at Sterling-Standish High School for 11 years, on Guam for four years, and at Thurston Middle School in Springfield for 15 years. She loved her students and took great pride in their accomplishments. Suzanne was a former "Teacher of the Year" in Springfield. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time at the ocean. She was a great lover of animals - especially her beautiful feline friends. She enjoyed music, all the arts and the beauty of all living things. Suzanne is survived by her parents; two sisters, Grace (Mike) Callahan and Nancy (Jack) Follett - both of Traverse City, Mich.; special friend and companion, Anne of Springfield; three nieces, Jennifer Callahan, Jackie (Monte) Rindlisbacher, and Lisa Robertson; and a nephew, Jamie Callahan. Loughlin, 67, who spent her summers on Old Mission Peninsula but resided in Grand Rapids, passed away Monday at Spectrum Health. She is survived by three daughters and five grandchildren: Pamela L. Abe enlisted in the United States Army on Oct. 4, 1940, during World War II. He received two Purple Hearts, a Victory Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and an American Defense Medal. Abe was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Raymond Wilcox Post No. 133 and the American Legion George Puckett Post No. 264 in Mancelona. He worked for Antrim Iron Works before World War II. He then worked for 31 years at Mount Clemens and Gulf & Western, now known as Dura, in Mancelona. He retired in 1981. Abe enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and his family. Roe, 89, of Traverse City, a faithful husband, father, and a dedicated minister of the Gospel in the United Methodist Church, was born to eternal life on Easter Sunday morning, April 23, 2000. Pastor Roe served 22 churches in Illinois and Michigan, including the Traverse City Emmanuel United Methodist Church from 1975 to 1978. He was also a pastor of visitation at Central United Methodist Church from 1978 to 1979. A skillful leader, Pastor Roe successfully led four churches (Grand Rapids Olivet, Traverse City Emmanuel, Dearborn Good Shepherd and Williamsburg United Methodist churches) through successful building enlargement programs. His ministry started in 1942 when he worked at the Howard Street Rescue Mission in Detroit. The mission was started by his mother for the homeless men in Detroit. The Rev. Roe attended the Detroit Institute of Technology in Detroit, the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, and the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, Ill. He loved people and being a friend. The Rev. Roe loved adventure, the outdoors, the water and cruising. He enjoyed canoeing with his sons, fishing and hunting. He also ran in the Cherry Festival races, his last being in 1983. He was a Boy Scout leader and sponsored different troops at the different churches he pastored. The Rev. Roe was also a member of the Rotary Club in Pigeon. Born Dec. 4, 1910, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Harry E. and Lulu (Ingrahm) Roe. On April 19, 1943, in Detroit, he married Elsie G. Ueberschar who survives. Also surviving are three children, the Rev. James F. (June) Roe of Traverse City, Mary E. (Dennis) Basch of Traverse City, and William P. Roe of Lansing; six grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. He loved them all very much. The Rev. Roe was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Andrew Evans, three brothers and one sister. Mary Lee Keillor Died April 19, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Lee Keillor, 76, former longtime resident of Hillsdale and winter resident of Ft. Myers, Fla. and summer resident of Traverse City, died Wednesday, April 19, in Ft. Myers. Fla. Mary was born March 30, 1924, in Homer to Richard and Louise Osborn. She graduated from Homer High School and was drum majorette of the high school band, and a charter member of Camp Fire where she spent many wonderful years. Her chosen Indian name was Kee-Koo-Wa. Mary worked as a telephone operator, church secretary, receptionist at Hillsdale High School and a homemaker. She was also a Camp Fire leader for many years. Mary was a lifelong member of The Presbyterian Church and had served as a Deacon, was a member and past president of The Ladies Golf Association of Hillsdale Golf and Country Club, a charter member of The Myerlee Country Club where she had six holes-in-one. She was also a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Ft. Myers, Fla. and was a member of The Women's Golf League. Along with her husband and son, she was co-owner of The Crystal Lake Golf Club in Beulah. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Scotland, Germany, Austria and Canada. She is survived by her husband, Arthur M. Ellis, M.D., 92, a Suttons Bay physician for 36 years, died Wednesday at Bortz Health Care. Claude was born in Pike County in Detroit, Ill. to Charles and Lenna (Scarborough) Ellis on Jan. 20, 1908. Claude attended local schools in Detroit and Pittsfield, Ill. From there he attended the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill., receiving a bachelor of science degree, and graduated from the College of Medicine in Chicago with a medical degree in 1934. He completed a 12 month rotating internship at the St. Francis Hospital in Evenston, Ill. He was then licensed to practice medicine and surgery in the states of Illinois and Michigan. He came to Suttons Bay with his wife, Ruby, and began his private medical practice in 1935. Claude was a member of the American Medical Association, the Michigan Medical Society, the Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Benzie Medical Society and a member of the staff at Munson Medical Center. He was also a member of the Central United Methodist Church. On Sept. 18, 1935, he married Ruby W. Erickson, who preceded him in death March 3, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Grace Howlett of St. Louis, Mo. and Ruth Keys of Pittsfield, Ill. Surviving are his two sons, Ronald (Arlene) of Traverse City and John of Phoenix. Claude also has three grandchildren, Christine and Ryan of Traverse City and Nicole of Phoenix. Claude practiced medicine as a country doctor which often included house calls at all hours and delivering babies in the home for many patients. Caring for the ill was his dedication for 36 years. He then retired and moved to Traverse City. His many interests, aside from his chosen profession of medicine, included fishing, boating, photography, landscaping and meticulous care of his lawn. He also enjoyed his annual spring and fall vacations with his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and by those he cared for over the years. Cremation has taken place. At Claude's specific request, no services will be held. A private service for Claude and his wife, Ruby, will be held at Memorial Gardens at a date yet to be decided. Marie was an active leader in Camp Fire and Horizon Club. She was a member of the PTA state board. She was also the president of the Traverse City Women's Club, a member of the Mozelle Sawyer Bridge Club and Traverse City Golf and Country Club, the altar guild at St. Francis and she enjoyed boating in the Traverse City area for many years with her husband. Memorials may be directed to a charity of one's choice. Ronald William Haggard Died April 27, 2000 CHARLEVOIX - Ronald William Haggard, 22, passed away suddenly on Thursday. Ron was born and lived in Charlevoix his entire life. He graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1996, where he was a standout member of the wrestling team and became a Michigan state finalist in his junior and senior years. Ron was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Father Pierre Knights of Columbus Council No. 7172. Ron loved to hunt and made numerous out-of-state hunting trips with his father. He also spent a great deal of time on Beaver Island and was a member of the Beaver Island Wildlife Club. Ron enjoyed art and writing poetry. One of his most cherished possessions was his Harley-Davison motorcycle, which is maintained with meticulous precision. He was employed by Haggard's Plumbing and Heating. Survivors include his loving parents, John and Phyllis Haggard; two beloved sisters and one brother, Betsy Haggard Svanda and husband Todd of Portland, Barbara Haggard Sheets and husband, Alec, of Berkley and John Earl Haggard, Jr. of Wasilla, Alaska. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix with a wake service at 8 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 1, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charlevoix with the Rev. Thomas A. Neis and the Rev. James Gardiner officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Albert Reinink Died April 27, 2000 KINGSLEY - Albert Reinink, 88, of Kingsley and formerly of Holland, died Thursday in Traverse City. Albert was a member of Faith Reformed Church in Traverse City and he retired from the City of Holland. He is survived by his sons, Harvin (Gail) Reinink of Grand Rapids, Ronald (Mary) Reinink of S. Carolina and Leonard (Judy) Reinink of Holland; one stepdaughter, Iris (Bassel) Durfee of Kingsley; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hermina (Willis) Compagner of Holland and Hilda (Ernie) Teusink of Forest Grove; one brother, Donald (Leona) Boerman of Forest Grove; one sister-in-law, Della (Gilbert) Boerman of Holland; and a brother-in-law, Jerald De Zwaan of Hudsonville. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine, in 1987, and his second wife, Mary, in 1999. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 1, at the Notier-Ver Lee Langeland Funeral Chapel, 315 E. 16th Street, Holland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Warren Burgess officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to Holland Christian Schools. |
