April 30, 2000ObituariesGOLDIE A. GRAMBAU, 68, of Kalkaska, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born Sept. 26, 1931, in Mishawaka, Ind.Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, also in Kalkaska. A memorial service for HERBERT W. KELLOGG, who died on Dec. 18, 2000, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at Cornell Cemetery in Buckley under the auspices of the Copemish American Legion. A luncheon will be provided by the Grand United Methodist Women immediately following at the Old Engine Show grounds clubhouse in Buckley. Arrangements are being handled by Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Graveside services for CLARENCE VALENCOURT will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at the Cleon Township Cemetery on Faylor Road in Copemish. Thomas R. Brief Died April 25, 2000 ELK RAPIDS - Thomas R. Brief, 80, of Elk Rapids, died Tuesday. Born Dec. 1, 1919, in Traverse City, he was the son of Thomas J. and Hazel (Russell) Brief. On April 12, 1947, he married Mary Hill and moved to Elk Rapids in 1950. Thomas was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a darkroom technician at Munson Medical Center for 19 years, retiring in 1975. A life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign War, Traverse City Chapter 2780. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, radio controlled model planes, model ship building and he built replica guns. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Elk Rapids; son, Frederick Brief of Kewadin; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; son, James R. Brief, who died on March 27, 2000; a sister, Joella Poertner; and brothers, Donald and Gilford Brief. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 1, at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Zuchowski officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Meadowbrook Care Facility or the Elk Rapids Ambulance Service. Jean C. Basch Died April 28, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Jean C. Basch, 84, of Traverse City, died Thursday, April 27, 2000. Born June 13, 1915, in Kalamazoo County, she was the daughter of Daniel and Lucy (Parrish) Batchelder. Jean was the owner of an adult foster care home for over 17 years, retiring in 1993. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, and had a deep love for animals. Jean will be deeply missed and her life will be cherished in her families hearts forever. Jean is survived by her son, James L. Basch of Grand Rapids; daughters, Betty Jean Smith and Christine A. Smith - both of Kingsley; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Harris Ervin Basch, who died in 1971. Cremation has taken place. A private family Service of Remembrance will be held with the Rev. Steve Summerfield officiating. Arrangements are by the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Marie Violet Day Died April 22, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Marie Violet Day, of Traverse City, died Saturday, April 22, at Silver View Adult Foster Care. Born Aug. 31, 1900, in Belding, she was the daughter of William P. and Catherine (Coe) Ryan. In 1926 at she married Leon M. Day, who preceded her in death. Marie was among the first graduating classes of Ferris Institute in Big Rapids. She was employed as a medical secretary for many years in Big Rapids and Grand Rapids. Marie was an active leader in Camp Fire and Horizon Club. She was a member of the PTA state board. She was also the president of the Traverse City Women's Club, a member of the Mozelle Sawyer Bridge Club and Traverse City Golf and Country Club, the altar guild at St. Francis and she enjoyed boating in the Traverse City area for many years with her husband. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Anne (Edward) Hughes of Traverse City; grandchildren, Deborah Day Hughes, Rebecca Anne (David) Brown and Edward G. (Gwen) Hughes, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Patricia Anne and Alisha Hughes and Meredith Marie and Derek Michael Brown; and many special nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's in Big Rapids with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Big Rapids. Memorials may be directed to a charity of one's choice. Ronald William Haggard Died April 27, 2000 CHARLEVOIX - Ronald William Haggard, 22, passed away suddenly on Thursday. Ron was born and lived in Charlevoix his entire life. He graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1996, where he was a standout member of the wrestling team and became a Michigan state finalist in his junior and senior years. Ron was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Father Pierre Knights of Columbus Council No. 7172. Ron loved to hunt and made numerous out-of-state hunting trips with his father. He also spent a great deal of time on Beaver Island and was a member of the Beaver Island Wildlife Club. Ron enjoyed art and writing poetry. One of his most cherished possessions was his Harley-Davison motorcycle, which is maintained with meticulous precision. He was employed by Haggard's Plumbing and Heating. Survivors include his loving parents, John and Phyllis Haggard; two beloved sisters and one brother, Betsy Haggard Svanda and husband Todd of Portland, Barbara Haggard Sheets and husband, Alec, of Berkley and John Earl Haggard, Jr. of Wasilla, Alaska. Ron is also survived by nephew, Dillon S. Hughs; nieces, Pauline and Sophia Sheets and Caroline Svanda; and many aunts and uncles. Ron's entire family loves and misses him a great deal. He had many friends who will never forget him. He will live forever in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix with a wake service at 8 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 1, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charlevoix with the Rev. Thomas A. Neis and the Rev. James Gardiner officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ronald William Haggard Memorial Fund in care of Charlevoix State Bank, 111 State Street, Charlevoix, MI 49720. Albert Reinink Died April 27, 2000 KINGSLEY - Albert Reinink, 88, of Kingsley and formerly of Holland, died Thursday in Traverse City. Albert was a member of Faith Reformed Church in Traverse City and he retired from the City of Holland. He is survived by his sons, Harvin (Gail) Reinink of Grand Rapids, Ronald (Mary) Reinink of S. Carolina and Leonard (Judy) Reinink of Holland; one stepdaughter, Iris (Bassel) Durfee of Kingsley; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hermina (Willis) Compagner of Holland and Hilda (Ernie) Teusink of Forest Grove; one brother, Donald (Leona) Boerman of Forest Grove; one sister-in-law, Della (Gilbert) Boerman of Holland; and a brother-in-law, Jerald De Zwaan of Hudsonville. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine, in 1987, and his second wife, Mary, in 1999. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 1, at the Notier-Ver Lee Langeland Funeral Chapel, 315 E. 16th Street, Holland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Warren Burgess officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to Holland Christian Schools. |
