      Died August 18, 2000
ELK RAPIDS - Benjamin Albert Eynon, 74, scientist, outdoorsman, and environmental activist of Pittsburgh, Pa., Midland, Mich., and Elk Rapids, Mich., passed away at his home in Elk Rapids on August 18, 2000. A memorial celebration will be held on Thursday, August 24, at 5:30 p.m., at the Edward R. Grace Harbor in Elk Rapids.
Born in Pittsburgh, September 13, 1925, Eynon grew up in the city's industrial South Side neighborhood with his father, Benjamin Franklin Eynon, his mother, Ann Dansevich Eynon, and four sisters. After graduating from Carrick High School in 1943, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, rose to the rank of Corporal, and served as a photographer in the Pacific theater.
Returning to Pittsburgh in 1946, Eynon married Elizabeth M. Phillips of Brentwood, Pa., and attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) graduating cum laude in Chemistry. In 1954, after serving as a Junior Fellow at the Mellon Institute, he took a position as a research chemist for the Dow Corning Corporation of Midland, Michigan. Working in Research, Product Development, and Technical Service, Eynon explored elastomers and silicon-hydrocarbon catalysts, developing a range of formulations patented by the company. He maintained life-long memberships in the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In Midland, Eynon was a devoted father to three sons, supporting them in academics, sports, music, Boy Scouting, and outdoors activities such as hiking, fishing, and canoeing. A member of the Bay City Yacht Club, he and his sons raced their Lightning class sailboat and placed high in the 1973 and 1974 regatta seasons. President of the Unitarian Universalist Church in the early 1960s, he oversaw the church's move to its present location on Jefferson Rd.
In 1981 Eynon retired from Dow Corning and moved to Elk Rapids, Michigan, where he married his second wife, Elsie Trerice. He led cross-country ski tours and bicycle trips in Michigan, Europe and the Rocky Mountains for the American Youth Hostels and Michigan Bicycle Touring. He served on the national AYH council, the Executive Committee of the Michigan Sierra Club, and as chair of the Sierra Club's national committee on computers and communications. Dedicating his scientific training to environmental protection, he was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Grand Traverse Watershed Initiative, a respected board member of the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, and a leader in developing a water quality protection plan for the Elk River Chain of Lakes Watershed.
Eynon took part in community life in other ways as well, serving as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician and as a member of the Elk Rapids Planning Commission. As the Planning Commission's chair, he coordinated the writing and passage in 1994 of the village's first comprehensive Master Plan. In 1997 he took a position as the Elk Rapids Zoning Administrator, a position he held at his death. In recent years, in part through his friendship with Sharon Randolph of the Interlochen Center for the Arts, he was an active supporter of dance and the performing arts.
Eynon is survived by his mother, his two former wives, his three sisters: (Rae Kirsch of Harrisonberg, Va.; Lee Boyd of Mt. Lebanon, Pa., and Keri Eynon of Gloucester, Mass.), and his three sons: Barry Eynon, 47, of Palo Alto, Calif., Senior Statistician with Silicon Genetics, Bret Eynon, Ph.D., 45, of New York City, Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching with Technology at the City University of New York (wife Sarah Williams), and Blake Eynon, 38, of Midland, Mich., Senior Control Technician with the SC Johnson Co (wife Diane). He has four grandsons: Hudson and August Williams-Eynon of Brooklyn; and Joshua and Nathaniel Eynon of Midland.
A celebration of Eynon's life will be held Thursday, August 24, 5:30-7:00, at the westernmost pavilion of the Edward R. Grace Harbor in Elk Rapids. In case of inclement weather, services will be moved to the Elk Rapids Town Hall, at the corner of River and Spruce Streets. A memorial bench will be dedicated at a later date.
