Group to offer more Building 50 tours

September 9, rain or shine

      TRAVERSE CITY - The group working to preserve Building 50 will host tours of the building as part of an afternoon of activities celebrating the main building on the former state hospital grounds.
      The group will meet on the front lawn of the Grand Traverse Commons, 12000 Eleventh St., from noon to 4 p.m. rain or shine Sept. 9. Those wanting to attend are invited to bring a picnic lunch, Frisbees, kites, dogs and kids.
      There will be an exhibit of art from Central Grade School students.
      The event starts with opening remarks and an update on Building 50 preservation efforts at noon.
      From 12:15 to 2 p.m. local historian Bob Wilhelm will give tours of the interior of Building 50. Tours will run about every 30 minutes beginning at the far north end entrance.
      At 1 p.m. Heidi Johnson, photographer and author of "Angels in the Architecture" will give tours of the exterior of Building 50. The group will meet in the circle drive in front of the building.
      There also will be door prizes and a brief meeting of the Committee to Preserve Building 50 to elect a board of directors.
