Obituaries

WINIFRED L. SALOW, 80, of Monroe, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000.
      Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rupp Funeral Home, Inc. of Monroe.
      ALINE C. SKURNIT, 83, of Bellaire died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Born July 25, 1917 in Detroit, she was an Avon sales representative for 30 years.
      A Funeral Mass will be recited at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Catholic Church in Bellaire, where friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of the Mass. Arrangements are handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
      EVA T. SNYDER, 87, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in Durand.
      Arrangements will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
      Edith L. Hook
      Died November 30, 2000
      BENZONIA-Edith L. Hook, 87, of Benzonia went to be with her Lord on Wednesday at The Homesteader in Benzonia.
      Edith was born May 19, 1913, in Grand Rapids, to William T. and Lillian (Perschbacher) Sanders. On July 28, 1938, in Grand Rapids, she was married to Thomas D. Hook.
      Edith was a homemaker and lived in Glen Ellyn, Ill. for 38 years, and then retired to Crystal Lake, in Beulah, in 1976. For the last three years, she resided at The Homesteader in Benzonia.
      Edith is survived by her sons Sanders (Bettie) Hook of West Chicago, Ill.; Daniel (Trudi) Hook of Waterford; and Charles (Pam) Hook of Hudsonville. Edith was the loving grandmother of Kimberly (Tom) O'Neil; Michelle (Rick) Anderson; Melanie Hook; Eric (Michelle) Hook; and Alicia, Lindsay and Ryan Hook.
      Edith was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband, Thomas D. Hook in 1997.
      Services will be held at The First Congregational Church of Benzonia, Saturday at 1 p.m., with Rev. Stephen Davidson and Rev. Telfer Mook officiating. Friends may call at the church at the time of the service.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church of Benzonia or to the Habitat for Humanity. Any expression of sympathy may be mailed to the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, 1417 Beulah Hwy., Beulah, MI, 49617, which will then be forwarded to the family.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Benzonia.
     
      James Luke Kingon
      Died November 30, 2000
      ELK RAPIDS-Jim Kingon, 56, a resident of Elk Rapids, died early Thursday morning from complications of lung cancer.
      Jim was born in Adrian on May 8, 1944, and spent his formative years there. His parents were Dr. Charles H. and Mildred (Luke) Kingon.
      Jim received a Bachelor of Science degree from Adrian College in 1968. He was a member of the U.S. Army reserve from 1967 through 1973. Jim was a teacher for the Tecumseh Public School system for 15 years and earned a Master of Arts degree in education administration from Eastern Michigan University in 1976.
      In the mid 1980s, Jim moved to the Traverse City area and for the past ten years had been employed at the Shanty Creek Resort. He was an avid sports enthusiast and coached many youth teams in baseball and basketball. He played tennis for Adrian College and his favorite pastime was golf.
      Jim is preceded in death by his parents.
      He is survived by his brother Bob and sister-in-law Karen of Milton Township; nephew Russell Kingon of Santa Cruz, Calif.; niece Kristine Davis of Lawrenceville, Ga.; his aunt and uncle Roberta and Watson Hogarth of Milton Township.
      No services are planned at this time.
      Donations in Jim Kingon's memory may be made to the Kewadin Methodist Church, Kewadin, Mi. 49629.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids.
     
      Dolores R. Mendenhall
      Died November 29, 2000
      FRANKFORT-Dolores R. Mendenhall, 74, a resident of Frankfort since 1948, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center.
      Dolores was born on April 8, 1926 in Cebu City, Philippines, the daughter of Vicente and Ingracia (Sarmiento) Ruiz.
      During her work life, Dolores worked for Classen's Toggery for 20 years, Olsen Sayles and Handiworks for Kids, all in Frankfort.
      Dolores was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Frankfort. She was a reading tutor for the summer program at Frankfort-Elberta Area Schools. She was a member of the Entre Nous Club, Frankfort-Elberta Chamber of Commerce. Dolores served as a host mother for several exchange students.
      Dolores is survived by her daughters Peggy (James) Prendergast of Bellevue, Ky.; Kim (Dan) Kidder of Frankfort; and Billie Jo (Steve) Gorski of Cadillac; seven granchildren and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Manuel Ruiz of New York and Fernando Ruiz in the Philippines, and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Dolores was preceded in death by her parents; a son RJ in 1949; brothers Jesus Ruiz and Antonio Ruiz; and sisters Milagros Ruiz and Veronica Ruiz.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, where a wake service will be held on Sunday at 7:30 p.m..
      Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. from St. Ann Catholic Church, with Father James Bearss serving as celebrant.
