Obituaries

WAINO VICTOR GUSTAFSON, 94, of Benzonia, formerly of North Shore Road in Bear Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at The Homesteader in Benzonia. He was born May 27, 1906, in Pleasanton Township.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Visitation will be from noon Sunday at the funeral home until the time of service. Interment will be in the Old School House Cemetery in Brown Township.
      DORIS V. WABSIS, 69, of Manistee, died unexpectedly Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. An Elder of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, she was born March 25, 1931, in Bear Lake.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Funeral services will be held at noon Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring of 2001 at Fairview Cemetery in Bear Lake.
      Louise Ann Kane
      Died November 29, 2000
      PESHAWBESTOWN - Louise Ann Kane, 78, of Peshawbestown, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Louise was born on High Island, the daughter of Alex and Esther (Washegesic) Cornstalk. She attended Holy Childhood Catholic School in Harbor Springs and North Central Michigan College in Petoskey. Louise graduated from Salt Lake City Community College with an associate's degree in substance abuse counseling. She was the first tribal council member from Charlevoix to serve the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. She belonged to Three Fires Nation, Turtle Clan and was a carrier of the traditional prayer pipe for her people. She served as the Beaver Island Tribal Historian and Grand Traverse Band Peacemaker. Louise also worked as a teacher's aid at Suttons Bay Middle School, and was cook at the Elder's Community. She served as counselor and director of Community Action for Rural Indians (C.A.R.I.). She attended St. Mary's Church in Charlevoix.
      Louise is survived by her children, Arrow (Susan) Hayes of Warwick, RI, Thomas Shelby Jeffrey of Indian River, Ronald Lee (Holly) Jeffrey of Suttons Bay, Bonita M. (Dave) Thompson of Ottawa, Ohio, Sharon K. (Charles) Jenkins of Dearborn Heights, Donzelle Kane of Beaver Island, Theresa (Sonny) Wabanimkee of South Haven; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Helen (Robert) Paul, Irene (Michael) Mitchell and Alvina Cornstalk - all of Charlevoix, and Rose Denemy of East Jordan; a brother, Alex JR Cornstalk of Mt. Pleasant; and uncle Dave Washegesic of Charlevoix.
      She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rebecca Hess; two sons, Arnold and Everett Jeffrey; and three brothers, Harvey, Frank and Thomas Cornstalk.
      Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Louise's spiritual advisors officiating. Burial will be at Brookside Cemetery in Charlevoix.
      Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association. Envelopes for contributions are available at the funeral home.
      Joseph William Mackzum
      Died November 30, 2000
      MAPLE CITY - Joseph William Mackzum, 95, of Maple City, died Thursday at Maple Valley Nursing Home.
      Born Oct. 21, 1905, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Frank and Minnie (Kelsch) Mackzum. On Sept. 7, 1929, in Newport, Ky., he married the former Catherine McDermott, who preceded him in death on April 15, 1980.
      Joseph retired from General Motors in Norwood, Ohio, after 36 years of employment. He was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church and The Men's Club. He liked to sing with the church choir and along with the radio. Joseph also enjoyed playing bingo.
      Survivors include a daughter, Doris Mae (Gordon) Plowman of Maple City; two brothers, Cletes Mackzum and Larry Mackzum of Cincinnati, Ohio; three grandsons, Aaron, Barth (Susan) and their children, Steven, Stephanie and Sara; and Craig (Carol) and their children, Cara and Jason.
      Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Rudolph, Walter, Wilbur, Stanley and Paul; and two sisters, Virginia and Heneretti.
      Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Maple City, where a rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with Rev. Chad Zielinski serving as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Rita's Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to Mass intentions or the Maple Valley Nursing Home.
      The family is being served by Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
      Leonard J. Monroe
      Died November 21, 2000
      WYOMING, Mich. - Leonard J. Monroe, 83, of Wyoming, Mich., formerly of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Nov. 1.
      He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; one daughter; one son; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, LaVerne (Roseannah) Keith of Grawn and Kenneth (Norma) Keith of Muskegon; and several nieces and nephews.
      Interment was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
