December 22, 2000ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Sarah L. Ruthenberg, 13, of Traverse City, died Tuesday morning at Munson Medical Center from natural causes.She was born on May 14, 1987, in Macomb County, the daughter of Rick and Pamela S. (DeSmith) Ruthenberg. Sarah enjoyed going to school, especially spending time with all of her friends, and really loved to dance. Survivors include her parents, Rick and Pamela; brother, Christopher; sister, Ashley; maternal grandmother, Lorraine DeSmith; and paternal grandmother, Beverly Ruthenberg. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Edward DeSmith; and paternal grandfather, Calvin Ruthenberg. Visitation will be on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. ELK RAPIDS - John Newbould, 63, of Elk Rapids and formerly of Clinton Township, joined our Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000. Born Feb. 4, 1937, in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, he was the son of John and Mary Ann (Bates) Newbould. He married the former Joan E. Aldred on Sept. 14, 1963, in Fenton, Mich. John received his Ph.D. from Oxford, England, and was employed as a research chemist for General Motors Tech Center. John was born and raised on a farm in England and really enjoyed farming, gardening and working on his computer. He believed in helping people and encouraged others to do the same. He served as president and later vice president of the Bass Lake Association and was instrumental in getting the Bass Lake clean-up completed. He also was unofficial president of Swan Point Road. John is survived by his wife, Joan of Elk Rapids; and a daughter, Tanya Joan (James) Del Pazzo of Los Angeles, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David; one aunt; and three uncles. A Celebration of Life service will be held at noon on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at the Elk Rapids First Presbyterian Church, where the family will greet friends from 11 a.m. until the time of service. The Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlein will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. ELK RAPIDS - Hilton M. Robb of Elk Rapids died on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000. Mr. Robb moved to Elk Rapids from Indiana in 1950. He was married to the former Gertrude Klepfer. She preceded him in death. He was a mechanic for Cole Brothers and the Grand Traverse Tractor Company for many years. He was a member of the Elk Rapids Masonic Lodge, and enjoyed flower gardening and reading. He is survived by two daughters, Betty (John) Merchant of Elk Rapids and Rebecca Robb of Paris, Mich.; a daughter-in-law, Minnie Robb of Manton; two sisters, Kate Locke and Frances Combs, both of Oaklandon, Ind.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Robert Robb. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, where friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services. The Rev. Thomas Pier-Fitzgerald will officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility. Woodrow C. Rowell Died December 20, 2000 KALKASKA - Woodrow C. Rowell, 82, a lifelong resident of Kalkaska, died Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. Mr. Rowell was born in Evart on April 17, 1918, to Lyman and Teresa (Easlick) Rowell. He married Beatrice Ball in Kalkaska on Aug. 24, 1940. She died on March 1, 1969. On Jan. 7, 1971, in Kalkaska, he married Thirza Conway, who preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 1995. Prior to his retirement, Woody served as Kalkaska Postmaster for many years. He was a veteran of World War II and a life member and past commander of Land O' Lakes VFW Post No. 8684. For 36 years, he was a member of the Kalkaska Fire Department, and had served for 32 years as its chief. He was a member of The Peoples Church. He enjoyed bowling, golf and was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers. Surviving are three sons, Dick Rowell, Bob (Gay) Rowell, and Jim (Jenny) Rowell, all of Kalkaska; four daughters, Marian Lee (Verl) Shaw of Florida City, Fla., Janet (Doug) Daniels of Fife Lake, Anne (Bill) Wagenschutz and Julie (Ricky) Berthelot, both of Kalkaska; a brother, Jack Rowell of Muskegon; a sister, Dorothy Robinson of Mesick; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Wilson Rowell; three sisters, Mildred, Carrie and Ethel; and a grandson, Douglas. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Rev. Paul Karges will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska. Military rites will be under the auspices of Land O' Lakes VFW Post No. 8684. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Dementia Unit. MESICK - Arthur Dwight Beach, 58, of Mesick, died Tuesday, December 19, 2000, at his residence. He was born on Sept. 3, 1942, in Mesick, the son of Arthur and Ethel (Brown) Beach. Dwight retired from the State of Michigan Hospital in Traverse City, where he had worked as a nurse's assistant in the children's ward. He was a volunteer on the Fire and Rescue Squad in Mesick, and was everyone's right-hand man. He had lived in Mesick his whole life, and was a friend to many. Dwight had the community garden in his back yard, and also had been known to take in stray dogs whenever he came across one. He is survived by his son, Allan Beach of Merritt Island, Fla.; his daughter, Sherri (John) Johnson of Merritt Island, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kaitlyn Beach, Adam Clark, Jennel Johnson, Tiffany Johnson and Tanna Johnson; one brother, William (Ann) Beach of Mesick; three sisters, Zola Cochrane and Nancy (Dick) Henry, both of Mesick, and Joann Fridsma of Holland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dwight was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 23, 2000, at Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with the Rev. Floyd Soper officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. MARY J. KUHNS, 79, of Kalkaska and formerly of Fife Lake, died on Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at her home. She was born on Dec. 14, 1921, in Ashley Michigan. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, December 22, at Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska. Arrangements were handled by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska. ROBERT E. PETERSON, 73, of Manistee, retired Vice President of Security National Bank in Manistee, died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. He was born on March 29, 1927, in Saginaw. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on December 27, 2000, at the Manistee First Congregational United Church of Christ. Arrangements are being handled by Johnson Funeral Home of Manistee. JOANNE YOUNG, 64, of Kaleva and formerly of Detroit, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. She was born June 23, 1936, in Detroit, the daughter of Edwin and Helen (Leppala) Wanhala. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Kaleva Baptist Church, where visitation will be held from noon until the time of services.
