December 27, 2000ObituariesMary Claudine AultTRAVERSE CITY - Mary Claudine Ault, 97, formerly of Lafayette, Ind., and Traverse City, died Monday, December 25, 2000, in Centerville, Ohio. Mary Claudine was born in Columbia, Ga., on October 6, 1903, to the late James and Julia (Proskine) Johnson. She was raised and educated in New York state, and graduated from Cornell University, where she met and married E. Stanley Ault. Mary Claudine was a member of the Variety Club, Immaculate parish luncheon committee and was an Eucharistic Minister, former president of the Lafayette (Ind.) Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Red Cross First Aid and Swimming Instructor, and was very active in Lafayette (Ind.) Symphony Org., NCCW, Purdue Univ., St. Mary Cathedral, Lafayette and Immaculate Conception parish in Traverse City, where they moved in 1979. Survivors include three sons, Edgar R. (Marie) Ault of Rockford, Donald F. (Linnea) Ault of Engadine and David G. (Rita) Ault of St. Louis, Mo., daughter, Claire M. (William) Bell of Kettering, Ohio, daughter-in-law Marjorie Ault of Albuquerque, N.M., 22 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Mary Claudine was preceded in death by her husband, E. Stanley, in 1993, her son Robert L. in 1983 and her grandson, Joseph F. Ault in 2000. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Visitation will continue on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service, at the church. Interment will be in the Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, or a charity of your choice. Casimer P. Jaroniewski Died December 25, 2000 ELMIRA - Casimer P. Jaroniewski, 77, of Elmira, died Monday. He was born on February 27, 1923, in Warner Township, the son of Thomas and Pearl (Kucharek) Jaroniewski. He married the former Elaine Blough, who preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1995. Casimer worked for Buick in Flint for 29 years as a electric crane operator. He is survived by three sons, Casimer "Bud" (Diane) of Elmira, Joseph (Carol) of Millington, and Michael (Sheila) of Grayling; four daughters, Arlene (Jim) Roberts of Florida, Gail Jaroniewski of Florida, Karen (Ken) Pigott of Fenton and Christine (Joe) Koos of Mt. Morris; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald (Delores) of Spruce; two sisters, Veronica (Eugene) Dameral of Boyne City and Monica (Stanley) Cherry of Hubbard Lake; three sisters-in-law, Marion Jaroniewski of Shelby Twp., Rosie "Tillie" Jaroneski of Elmira and Helen Jaroniewski of Warren; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be held at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord on Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m., and Friday at the church beginning at 10 a.m. A parish wake service will be held on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Church in Elmira. Hodge, 84, of Traverse City, died on Monday, Christmas Day, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born on February 25, 1916 in Lake Leelanau, daughter of David and Lucy (Brow) Richard. On April 12, 1937, Ruth married Robert W. Hodge at Lake Leelanau St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau. Ruth was a longtime member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of Americas, as well as a member of the Variety Club. She enjoyed playing bridge, working on church bake sales, music and dancing. Ruth also treasured the time spent with her family and will be remembered for her great sense of humor. Ruth is survived by her three children, Robert (Mary) Hodge of Mukowonago, Wisc., Camille (Ronald) Parker of Traverse City, and Jeannine Milne of Traverse City; daughter -in-law Dorothy Hodge of Traverse City; five sisters, Alice Stafford, Eva Porter, Imelda Donlon, Phyllis Fleis and Donna McKaig; and one brother, Clayton Richard. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Laura, Michael and Ann Marie Hodge; James, John, Michele, and Matthew Parker and Jeannine Halloway; David, Daniel, Bryan and Kevin Hodge; step-grandchildren, Robert Milne, Jr., Robin Gibson and Elisa Coleman; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Hodge, on April 11, 1997; her parents; her son, Richard Hodge, on March 26, 1981; two brothers, Cletus Richard and David Richard; and her son-in-law, Robert C. Milne, Sr., on July 31, 2000. Friends may call on Thursday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church, with Rev. James Gardiner serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. **flag** Katherine "Aunt Sooky" Clarici Died December 25, 2000 MANCELONA - Katherine "Aunt Sooky" Clarici, 83, of Mancelona, formerly of Traverse City, died Monday at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. She was born September 19, 1917, in Old Mission, the daughter of William "Tink" and Maude (Hurst) Tompkins. On August 10, 1946, she married Karl Clarici in Elk Rapids. Katherine was a direct descendant of Robert Drake Tompkins, one of the original settlers of Old Mission. She was a mess sergeant in the WAC of the U.S. Army in WWII, and a cook at the Elks Lodge. She also enjoyed bingo, fishing and playing cards. She was a great story teller and had a wonderful sense of humor. Katherine is survived by two granddaughters, Amber Clarici and Brooke Stanford, both of Traverse City, and many loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Karl in 1975; son Carl, Jr. in 1977; and 13 brothers and sisters. Visitation will take place Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. Christopher "Chris" William Blackburn Died December 23, 2000 CADILLAC - Christopher "Chris" William Blackburn, 15, of Cadillac, died Saturday at DeVos Childrens Hospital in Grand Rapids, as a result of a snowboarding accident. He was born on December 23, 1985, in Saginaw, the son of Alan J. and Janelle (Thiemke) Blackburn. Chris was a 9th grade student at the Cadillac Area Public Junior High School, where he was on the school debate team. He was employed at Meijer Store in Cadillac for the past year. Chris collected basketball cards and enjoyed playing basketball. He also enjoyed skateboarding, inline skating, snowmobiling, motorcycle riding, and his true love, snowboarding. Chris is survived by his parents, Alan J. and Janelle Blackburn of Cadillac; two brothers, Rob Blackburn and Jon Blackburn, both of Cadillac; grandparents William "Bill" and Julia Blackburn of Harrison and Mrs. Ruth Shunk of Harrison; his aunt, Vicki Blackburn of Port Huron; his uncle, Fred (Sharon) Thiemke of Caro; and his godparents, Jean and Cary Ambrose of Fort Wayne, Ind. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Jack Shunk and Fred Thiemke; and great-grandparents, James and Alice Richmond, and Walter and Daisy Blackburn. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. Funeral services will take place on Friday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Cadillac Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. Peter Byma officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. MABEL ESTHER SCHIMKE, 102, of Bear Lake, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Memorial Hertiage Christian AFC Home in Onekama Township. She was born on November 29, 1898, in Onekama Township, the daughter of William and Bertha Smith. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Visitation will be held from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Onekama Village Cemetery in the spring. JOHN W. SCHOOLCRAFT, 67, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at his home in Mancelona. He was born on February 23, 1933. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc., of Mancelona. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. JAMES E. WARD, 78, of Traverse City, died Monday morning, December 25, 2000, at Munson Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
