December 29, 2000ObituariesMANISTEE - Rose E. Batzer, 90, of Manistee, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.She was born August 9, 1910, in Manistee, the daughter of Martin and Lillian (Ethell) Dontz. Rose was an alumna of Merritt's School; a graduate of Manistee High School, Class of 1927; and received her Bachelor's Degree from Western Michigan University. She married William R. Batzer on December 21, 1936, in Manistee. He preceded her in death on May 15, 1964. Rose retired from Manistee Area Public Schools. She taught first grade at Madison Elementary School for many years and each year in April she would announce to her family that all of her pupils were reading at a minimum of a second-grade level. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, and was a life member of Manistee Chapter No. 300, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Manistee United Methodist Church. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Linda Batzer, Hon. James and Deborah Batzer, and Dr. Theodore and Dorothy Batzer, all of Manistee; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she also was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Woods; and her brother, Florian Dontz. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 30, 2000, at the Manistee United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Russell Garrigus officiating. Burial will be held in the spring at the Onekama Village Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Johnson Funeral Home today, December 29, 2000, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The body of Mrs. Batzer will be taken to the church Saturday morning at noon to lie in state until the time of services. The family suggests that those wishing to remember Rose consider a gift to either the Manistee County Historical Museum or to the West Shore Medical Center Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and at the funeral service. The Johnson Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements. TRAVERSE CITY - Elizabeth "Liz" Brosier, 21, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, as the result of an automobile accident. She was born on July 11, 1979, in Jersey Shore, Pa., the daughter of Michael Allen and Marsha Lyn (Vukich) Frick. On July 17, 1999, in Traverse City, she married Shane Richard Brosier. Liz graduated from Traverse City High School in 1997, where she played flute in the marching band. She furthered her education by attending Reformed Bible College in Grand Rapids. As a teen, Liz was a member of the Faith Reformed Church youth group. She enjoyed drawing, and animals, especially horses. But her greatest love was for God and for people. Liz was a loyal friend who will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her husband, Shane Richard Brosier of Traverse City; her parents, Michael A. and Marsha L. Frick of Cedar; two sisters, Ruth (Andrew) Wakeman of Mount Pleasant, and Jessica Frick at home with her parents; her father- and mother-in-law, Richard A. and Sandra R. Brosier of Lake Ann; her maternal grandparents, Frank J. Vukich of Pennsylvania and Phyllis Vukich of Pennsylvania; her paternal grandparents, David and Elizabeth Frick of Mount Pleasant; Shane's grandparents, Emily T. Brosier of Lake Ann and Midland, and Donald and Barbara Owen of Midland; her sister- and brother-in-law, Katie R. (Mickey) Anderson of Texas; and her sisters-in-law, Kelli, Holly and Emily Brosier, all of Lake Ann. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Faith Reformed Church. The Rev. Charles Towersey and Dr. Nick Twomey will officiate. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Faith Reformed Church in care of the senior high youth group. MAPLE CITY - Bernard J. Denoyer, 62, of Maple City, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born on May 26, 1938, in rural Lake Leelanau, he was the son of Louis and Esther (Osie) Denoyer. He married the former Gail M. Miller on Sept. 21, 1969, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muskegon. She survives him. Bernard lived in Lake Leelanau for 20 years and was a resident of Maple City for the past four years. Bernard was a painter for about 15 years. He then performed building maintenance for the Bluebird Restaurant in Leland and for the past two years had performed maintenance for Leelanau Sands Casino. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and euchre with friends on Monday evenings. In addition to his wife, Gail, he is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Joseph) Weatherholt of Maple City, and Michelle Denoyer of Traverse City; a grandson, Caleb Weatherholt; a granddaughter, Kori Weatherholt; three sisters, Doris Denoyer, Patricia Moshier and Marcella Denoyer, all of Traverse City; two brothers, Thomas (Georgia) Denoyer of South Lyon, and Cletus (Ann) Denoyer of Ann Arbor. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ronald and Lawrence. Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 30, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau. The Rev. Jerry Hunko will officiate. Interment will be in the spring at St. Paul's Cemetery, Good Harbor. Memorials may be directed to Mass intentions or to the family. Arrangements are being handled by Martinson Funeral Home. BELLAIRE - Richard J. "Si" Hebden, 68, of Bellaire, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, December 27, 2000, following a long, valiant fight with cancer. Born in Echo Township, Antrim County, on Jan. 11, 1932, he was the son of William and Clara (Weisler) Hebden. He graduated from Central Lake High School with the class of 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. In 1959, he moved from Detroit to Bellaire, where he worked for Lamina Bronze Inc., until his retirement in 1995. Si was a member of Grace Community Church in Central Lake. On June 28, 1958, in Alden, he married the former Dawn M. Harrington, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jeffrey (Natalie) Hebden of Bellaire, Kim (Tony) Scuglik of Cranberry, Pa., Joe (Carrie) Hebden of Bellaire, and Kelly (Mark) Papa of Tallahassee, Fla.; two brothers, Edward Hebden of Central Lake and Charles (Sally) Hebden of Bellaire; a sister, Kathleen (Kenneth) Aenis of Central Lake; six grandchildren, Katie and Ryan Hebden, Kari, Corey and Cody Scuglik, and Alyssa Papa; and many nieces and nephews. Si was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Grace Community Church, with the Rev. Estel Clark officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Dunsmore Cemetery, Echo Township. Box 998, Bellaire, MI 49615. JANE (McGEORGE) JOHANNING, 95, of Troy, and formerly of Northport, died on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Born on Dec. 27, 1905, in Wells County, Ind., she was the daughter of Charles and Flora (Cox) Stinson. She was a homemaker. Services will take place in the spring. Arrangements are being handled by A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home. BERNICE O'KROY, 89, of Manistee, died on Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. She was born on Aug. 19, 1911, in Manistee. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, where an evening prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Jan. 2, 2001, at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit. ELIZABETH "CAROL" PORTER, 40, of Mesick, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hitesman Funeral Home in Cadillac, where services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Burial will be in Mesick Sherman Cemetery. ANDREW H. VELDHUIS, M.D., 78, of Beulah, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort. Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, where friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Burial will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery. EDMUND JOSEPH WASEL, 82, of Traverse City and formerly of Grand Rapids, died December 21, 2000, in Traverse City. He was born on September 2, 1918, in Pittsburgh. He was employed by Behler-Young in Grand Rapids and was transferred to Traverse City in 1972. He retired in 1984. Services and burial were in Grand Rapids. |
