TRAVERSE CITY - Donald M. Orr, mostly known by family and friends as "D.O.", a Traverse City resident of many years, died in Munson Medical Center of cancer after several months of protracted and heroic efforts to conquer his illness, a battle he finally lost.
He was born on February 9, 1920, in Bay City, the son of Kenneth and Ethel (Vernier) Orr, both deceased.
After graduating from Fordson High School in Dearborn, Don served in the armed forces from 1941 to 1945, serving in the South Pacific. He made his permanent home in Traverse City after service. He was a teacher after completing college at Central State. He was employed as an insurance agent, and was part owner of Evans & Orr Paint Shop in Traverse City.
D.O. was a pioneer in the ski and motel business in Traverse City, developing the D. Orr House Motel and Don Orr Ski Shop, which is owned and managed by his wife, Bonnie. These efforts started more than 30 years ago.
As far back as anyone can remember, this avid sportsman and sailor had the wanderlust wish to sail around the world, which he accomplished in his 70s, most of the trip acting as captain, crew member and navigator all at once. At one time, he sailed alone for 27 days without seeing another person.
He leaves behind his wife of many years, Bonnie; children Michael of Calif., and Patrick of Illinois; step-daughter Heidi Kruse of Arizona; sister, Marilyn Damian of Dearborn; two grandchildren; a niece and nephew, and close family friend Respati Ningsih. D.O. leaves a host of hunting buddies, friends, and family, too numerous to mention.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Mari.
The family, following D.O.'s wishes, had him cremated immediately. A memorial service will take place later this summer. His ashes will be strewn over the adjacent waters he loved and sailed for most of his adult life. His family and friends wish him a Bon Voyage, smooth sailing on his trip into Eternity.
Memorials may be made to Munson Hospice. Arrangements were handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
