Joan Barron Died January 31, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Joan Barron, 57, of Traverse City, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born Sept. 20, 1942, in Mt. Clemens, she was the daughter of Robert and Blanche (Gilbert) Sharrow. On Sept. 7, 1963, at Selfridge Air Force Base, she married Paul Barron. A homemaker, Joan was a member of VFW Post No. 2780 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed bingo, traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Paul, of Traverse City; four children, Sherry (Pat) Swogger and Karen (John) Verschuren - both of Traverse City, Paul Jr. of Chicago and Christy (Rob) Brown of Traverse City; grandchildren, Jennifer Castillo of Cincinnati, Ohio and Bryan Reagan, Krista Hammond, Heather Barron, Nicholas Swogger and Steven Swogger - all of Traverse City; a great-grandson, Alexander Kraeft of Traverse City; a brother, Donald Sharrow of Gaylord; a sister, Susan Sharrow of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Linda; and a brother, Davy. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A "Celebration of Life" will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Louis Grettenberger officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the VFW Post No. 2780 Ladies Auxiliary. flag Harold Marion Biehl Died January 30, 2000 BELLAIRE - Harold Marion Biehl, of Bellaire, died Sunday at the age of 81 at the Northwest Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz. Harold was born July 8, 1918, in Brazil, Ind. to the late Gerald and Marie (Easter) Biehl. In 1920, the family moved to Mancelona, where he graduated from high school in 1936. In 1941, Harold and his father began operating the Farmer's Marketing Association in Bellaire as Gerald Biehl and Son until June 9, 1942, when Harold was drafted and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II for 3 1/2 years. Harold's father continued to operate the store in Harold's absence. He was stationed in various places in the United States and overseas in England for two years. He was discharged from the Army on Dec. 26, 1945. On Jan. 1, 1946, he was married to the former Bernice Ella Hintz of Western Nebraska. After their marriage, they made their home in Bellaire and Harold again took his place in the feed store. In 1968, the feed store closed in Bellaire, but he with his father and brothers continued to operate the feed business as Biehl's Feed, Inc. in Mancelona. Harold also worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Bellaire for 25 1/2 years, 21 years as a postal clerk and 4 1/2 years as rural route carrier. He retired in February, 1980. Since 1981, Harold and his wife have been spending their winters in Arizona. He was a member of the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church and held various offices in the church including that of church treasurer for 15 1/2 years. Surviving are his wife, Bernice; son, Harold J. (Peggy) of Hudson; two daughters, Sharon K. (John) Donovan of Milwaukie, Ore. and Debra L. (Craig) VanSice of Tucson, Ariz.; five brothers, Arthur (Virginia) Biehl of Mancelona, Robert (Evida) of Mancelona, James (Darlene) of Alden, Gerald (Vera) of Mancelona and Donald of Mancelona; three sisters, Helen Northrup of West Palm Beach, Fla., Mary (Frank) Mehlberg of Mancelona and Betty (Delmer) Duerksen of Mancelona; a sister-in-law, Leonore Hintz of Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at the Mortenson Funeral Home in Bellaire. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Bellaire in the spring with details to follow. Memorials may be directed to the Memorial Fund of the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church. Lillian L. (Sams) Garcia Died January 29, 2000 GRAND RAPIDS - Lillian L. (Sams) Garcia, 51, of Grand Rapids, died Saturday. Born March 19, 1948, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Nicholas J. and Elsie I. (Marks) Wilson, Sr. Lillian married Guillermo Garcia, who survives her. Lillian was a member of the Kewadin Indian Methodist Church and a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. She loved to play bingo. She is survived by her husband; children, Lionel Wilson, Leesa (Julian) Mendez-Sams, Tina (Donald) Leaureaux-Sams, Josie (Matthew) Anderson-Sams, Billie (Charles) Sams, Mellena Rae Sams and Nicholas Manual Cavasos; 11 grandsons; four granddaughters; brothers, Eugene (Marlene), William (Arlene), Leonard (Victoria), Melvin (Lena), Matthew, Gregory (Ruth), Luke, Terry, Gregory II, Timothy Wilson and Ross Wyatt; sisters, Christine Wilson and Aimee (Paxon) MacDermaid; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Clifford C. Wilson; and Nicholas B. Wilson, Jr. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kewadin Indian Mission Church. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kewadin United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Kewadin Indian Mission Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Helen M. Wyatt Died January 30, 2000 TRUFANT - Helen M. Wyatt, 75, of Trufant and formerly of Traverse City, died Sunday at Greenville United Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Born June 11, 1924, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of William H. and Orah M. (Wilson) Fowler. She married Lee Wyatt, who preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy (William) Henderson of Bloomington, Minn.; a son, Kevin (Lavon) Curtis of Traverse City; six grandchildren, Sean Glynn of Boulder, Colo., Hillary Heisler of Lake City, Jakob Heisler, who attends University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., Benjamin Curtis of Ft. Myers, Fla., Elizabeth Curtis of New Orleans, La. and Kaley Curtis of Traverse City; stepsons, Lee (Debra) Wyatt and Paul (Linda) Wyatt and their children - both of Lake Forest, Ill.; a sister, Ione Schottler of Trufant; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Harry, Clare, Guy, Robert and Clayton Fowler. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City with Rev. James Bendig officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association. Peggy D. Zilch Died January 28, 2000 PERRY - Peggy D. Zilch, 62, of Perry, died Friday in Florida. Born May 6, 1937, in Benzie County, she was the daughter of Arthur and Grace (Forrester) Banktson. On Nov. 24, 1956, in Frankfort, she married Rudolph "Bud" Bernard Zilch, who preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 1985. Peggy taught school for Benzie County Country School, worked the switchboard for Michigan Bell and Munson Hospital in Traverse City and was a bus driver and teacher's aid in Perry. She also worked for K-Mart in Tacoma, Wash., Okemos and Winter Haven, Fla. She was a member of the Herring Lake Baptist Church in Frankfort, VFW Auxiliary No. 4603, Perry-Shaftsburg Lioness and the Perry School Board. She attended school board meetings for over 20 years and volunteered at Hart Pines and cancer and blood drives. Survivors include longtime companion, Sam Barner; sons, John (Shonda) of Haslett and Jay (Susan) of Hopkinsville, Ky.; daughters, Suzy Que (Tom) Pelton of Grand Rapids and Kitty Coy (Andy) Rynberg of Hesperia; eight grandchildren, Brooke and Brandon Zilch, Drew, Derek and Dustin Rynberg and Richard, Stephanie and Amanda Zilch; Sam's children, Steven Barner and Jo Brock-Mason; two sisters, Beatrice (Paul) Hopkins and June Buttermore - both of Grand Rapids; a brother, Forrester Banktson of Grand Rapids; and many nieces, nephews and good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Bob and Jim; and in-laws, Rudolph and Dolly Zilch. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, LaRowe Chapel in Perry. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Herb Smith officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
