February 29, 2000ObituariesDOROTHY D. VAN EPPS, 101, of Traverse City, died on Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Central United Methodist Church, where friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursday. Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.Anna Margrethe Cecillie Jensen Died Feb. 24, 2000 PETOSKEY - Anna Margrethe Cecillie Jensen, 93, of Petoskey, died Thursday at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey. Anna was born June 19, 1906, in Hou, Denmark. The daughter of Soin Peter and Sophia (Jensen) Andersen, she grew up near Herning, Denmark. On May 4, 1929, Anna married Christian Gotfred Jensen in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Jensen preceded his wife in death on Aug. 15, 1969. After her marriage, Anna moved to Lansing, where her husband was a veterinary student at Michigan State University. In 1936, Anna and Dr. Jensen moved to Petoskey, where the couple opened Jensen Animal Hospital. During World War II, Dr. Jensen served in Europe as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. After the war, he remained in Europe to assist with the Marshall Plan. Anna joined her husband and traveled extensively with him. After a time, the Jensens returned to Petoskey and the animal hospital they had established. In 1954, Anna became the general chairman of the Wives of Northern Michigan Veterinary Medical Association. She also was very active with Girl Scout Troop No. 6 in Petoskey. In the 1970s, she moved to MacKenzie Drive in Kewadin near Elk Rapids, then in the mid-1990s she moved back to Petoskey, where she lived at Independence Village. Anna is survived by one sister, Olga (Alfred) Madsen of Herning, Denmark; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, where friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of service. The Rev. David Behling will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey. Mary A. Newmarch Died Feb. 27, 2000 KINGSLEY - Mary A. Newmarch, 77, of Kingsley, died on Sunday at Munson Medical Center. Born May 16, 1922, in Kingsley, she was the daughter of Henry and Mable (Church) Hency. On June 7, 1939, in Traverse City, she married Harold L. Newmarch. A lifelong Kingsley resident, she was a homemaker. She also was a member of Kingsley United Methodist Church, the North Paradise Flower Club, the UAW Retirees in Traverse City and Kingsley and also was a former 4-H leader. She was an excellent seamstress, an avid gardener and also enjoyed hunting. She is survived by her husband, Harold of Kingsley; five daughters, Eleanora (Dale) Strange, Joan (Russell) Willingham, Juanita (Robert) King, and Sharon (Terry) Case, all of Kingsley, and Marion (Donald) Peplinski of Maple City; a son, Daniel (Amy) Newmarch of Cedar Springs; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris (Frank) Rawlings of Kingsley, and Norma (Brent) Walton of Traverse City; a brother, Alva Hency of New Mexico; a great-aunt, Muriel Church; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Gerald Hency; and a great-grandson. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, and also from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at Kingsley United Methodist Church, where a "Celebration of Life" service will be held at 2 p.m. The Rev. Char Minger will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Kingsley United Methodist Church. Arrangements were handled by Covell-Smith Funeral Home. Susan Gerrard Stanley Died Feb. 26, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Susan Stanley, 62, of Traverse City, and formerly of Coconut Grove, Fla., and Seattle, Wash., died Saturday. Susan was born on Dec. 23, 1937, in Owensboro, Ky., to John and Martha (Mastin) Cooley, both now deceased. She attended Florida State University and completed her degree at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1960, she married Keith Gerrard of Watertown, Mass. In 1988, she married Rear Adm. Emory D. Stanley Jr., who preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1999. She is survived by two daughters, Jessica Gerrard Rickard of Traverse City, and Beth Compton Gerrard of Seattle; two sons-in-law, Dan Rickard and John Cooke, respectively; and three grandchildren, Dylan and Hannah Rickard, and Benjamin Cooke. She also is survived by her adoptive father, Dr. James M. Strickland; two brothers, James and John Strickland; and two sisters, Stephanie Manwell and Laurie Carter. Susan's love and deep compassion for friends and family is eternal - those who knew and loved her will always treasure that gift. A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Grace Episcopal Church, where friends may call from 3:30 p.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. D. Edward Emenheiser and the Rev. Steffes Died Feb. 26, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Longtime Traverse City resident Helen Johanna Steffes, 86, died on Saturday at Munson Medical Center. Born on March 26, 1913, in DuBois, Pa., Helen was the daughter of Charles and Twila (Mitchell) Milewski. In 1931 in Dearborn, she married Urban "Bud" Steffes, who preceded her in death in 1980. The couple moved from Dearborn to Traverse City in 1932. They owned and operated Green Hill Grocery from 1947 until 1988, when she retired. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She also was a 4-H leader, participated in the Garfield Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary and was a member of the Gunton Club and Variety Club in Traverse City. Helen was an avid card player. She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie (Walter) Preiss of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Connie (Larry) Zoulek of Traverse City; three sons, Urban (Ann) Steffes Jr. of Edson, Alberta, Canada, Charles (Linda) Zoulek of Whitehall, Mont., and William Zoulek of Traverse City; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Genevieve McMakara of St. Clair Shores, Mich., and Josephine (Max) Rouschmann of Seattle. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sylvia. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City, where friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City. Arrangements were handled by Covell Funeral Home. Lewis E. Wortman Died February 26, 2000 KINGSLEY - Lewis E. Wortman, 84, died Saturday in Grand Rapids. Born Sept. 30, 1915, in Kingsley, he was the son of Bert H. and Nettie (Durr) Wortman. On June 19, 1937, in Kingsley, he married Margaret Dickinson. She preceded him in death in 1994. A lifelong Kingsley resident, Mr. Wortman was a custodian and farmer and was employed by the State of Michigan. He also was a member of the Kingsley Free Methodist Church and enjoyed woodworking and travel. He is survived by one sister, Janice Eggebrecht of Jackson, Mich.; a foster daughter, Wilma Burrow of Buckely; two foster grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Albert, and three sisters, Ella, Mabel and Pauline. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, where a "Celebration of Life" service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday. The Rev. Alfred Denison will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Kingsley Free Methodist Church.
