January 24, 2000ObituariesFRANCES ANNE BURON, 84, of Grayling, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Kalkaska. A retired secretary, Frances was born May 5, 1915, in Port Huron. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grayling. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling. Arrangements are by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling. LEVI W. FEWINS, 94, of Long Lake Township, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Arrangements are pending at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A full obituary will appear in Tuesday's Record-Eagle. MARVIN A. LUCAS, 63, of Banks Township, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, in Torch Lake Township. He was born June 2, 1936. Private family services will be held. Arrangements are by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. ADAM X. MAZUREK, 80, of Cedar, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at home. Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A full obituary will run at a later date. Cathleen Lucile (Hulett) Bigelow Died January 21, 2000 GREENWOOD, S.C. - Cathleen Lucile (Hulett) Bigelow, 70, died Friday at her home in Greenwood. Born in Paradise Township, Mich., she was a daughter of Glen and Minnie Hulett of Traverse City, Mich. A seamstress, secretary and designer of original craftworks by trade, Cathleen also touched the hearts of many while voluntarily helping the elderly, ill and handicapped. Survivors include her husband, Raymond Bigelow of Greenwood; son, Kevan Nason of Greenwood; step daughters, Alice Slusser of Jasper, Ind., and Mary Ann Stander of Grand Rapids, Mich.; sister, Jacqueline Polega of Grand Rapids, Mich.; brother, Raymond Hulett of Toella, Utah; and aunt, Lucile Gooding of Battle Creek, Mich. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Harley Funeral Home. The family is at the home, 103 Oak Forest Dr., Greenwood. Ada Mae Sage Died January 22, 2000 BENZONIA - Ada Mae Sage, 77, of Benzonia, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born April 14, 1922, in Bingham Township, Leelanau County, Mich., she was the daughter of Bert and Mary (Keaton) Salisbury. Ada attended and was active in Beulahland Wesleyan Church in Beulah for many years. A homemaker for most of her life, she enjoyed doing crafts and gardening; she loved children, especially her grandchildren. On Aug. 30, 1946, in Maple City, she married James Edward Sage who survives her. Also surviving are two son, Robert (Sandy) Sage of Montgomery, Ala., and Jack (Sandy) Sage of Interlochen; two daughters, Georgia Sage of Traverse City and Carol Snyder of Lake Ann; four grandchildren, Christopher Worm, Ed Hamner, Tricia Sage, and Amanda Snyder; one great-grandson, Alex Kuelske; four brothers, Don Salisbury of Traverse City, Al (Dorothy) Salisbury of Traverse City, Ray (Barb) Salisbury of Maple City, and Jim (Sara) Salisbury of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ada was preceded in death by her sister, Edna Trumble, and two brothers, Jerry Salisbury and Ken Salisbury. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home; Pastor Kenneth Blair will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons Bible Fund. Irene Schwencer Died January 21, 2000 NORTH BLUE LAKE - Irene Schwencer, 96, of North Blue Lake, Kalkaska County, died Friday at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. The Rev. Carol Floyd will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek. She was born Oct. 11, 1903, in Enid, Okla., the daughter of Albert and Mary (Stearns) Fruin. On Nov. 20, 1923, in Battle Creek, she married Albert Schwencer Sr. They lived in Battle Creek until her retirement from Kresges Department Store in 1965. They then moved to North Blue Lake in Kalkaska County. Albert died in March of 1971. Irene was a very active member of the Mancelona United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling and playing board games. Irene is survived by four children, Wanda (Jack) King of Silverdale, Wash., Albert (Barbara) Schwencer of Sunderland, Md., William (Irene) Schwencer of Great Falls, Mont., and Robert (Barbara) Schwencer of Washington, Utah; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marion Ketcham of Battle Creek. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Irene Rogers, in 1961; one brother, Traverse Fruin; and two sisters, Easter Violet Curtis and Agnes Sherwood. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. Memorials may be given to Mancelona United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes Association. cq Buddy-(no quotes) flag photo Buddy G. Sheffer Died January 22, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Buddy G. Sheffer, 75, of Traverse City, died Saturday. Born Jan. 31, 1924, in Cedar, he was the son of Benjamen Dick and Anna Marie (Basch) Sheffer. On Nov. 20, 1944, he married Harriette (Jean) Gauthier. A retired truck driver, Buddy enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and spending time with his friends at the Interlochen Eagles Lodge. He was a veteran of World War II and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Cherryland Post No. 2780. Survivors include his sons, Gary (Val), Mike, and Rick (Jenny) Sheffer - all of Traverse City; daughters, Barb McCaffrey, Gloria Schroeder, and Kandee Sheffer - all of Traverse City; brother, Orville Sheffer; sisters, Norma Schaub and Violet Krof; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, in 1989, and his brothers, Walt and John Sheffer. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Interlochen; the Rev. Timothy Mowry will officiate. A luncheon will follow at Bendon Eagles Lodge. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Interlochen Eagles building fund. Edward F. Themm Died January 22, 2000 KINGSLEY - Edward F. Themm, 79, of Kingsley, passed away Saturday at home. Born Sept. 7, 1920 in Marlette, Mich., he was the son of John and Ida Marie (Minser) Themm. He married Lena May Newmarch. A former General Motors Corp. employee in Pontiac, Edward retired in 1973 after 35 years of service. He moved to Kingsley from Pontiac in 1974. He was a member of Fife Lake Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and of the Grand Traverse United Auto Workers in Traverse City. Edward enjoyed spending time on the family farm in Kingsley and being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Jean Themm of Cadillac; four grandchildren, Edward Themm III (Diane DeLoy) of Grawn, Mary Smith of Northport, Fla., Barb (Bruce) Nolan of Grove City, Fla., and George Themm of Cadillac; three step grandchildren, Alice (Will) Fleming, Margaret Ochko, and William (Shelly) Main - all of Cadillac; and 10 great-grandchildren. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lena in 1988, and a son, Edward F. Themma Jr., in 1988. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home; Pastor Bruce Van Dussen will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kingsley. |
