A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grayling. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling. M. PAULINE "PENNY" VANDERMOLEN, 78, of Traverse City, formerly of Grand Blanc, died Monday, July 17, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Martha Ruth Lundy (Cogshall) Died July 17, 2000 ELK RAPIDS - Martha Ruth Lundy (Cogshall), 90, of Elk Rapids and Traverse City, passed away Monday. Born Sept. 4, 1909, in South Haven, she was the daughter of Frederick and Ruth Cogshall. Martha spent her childhood in South Haven. She graduated from University of Michigan in 1930 with a BA degree and received her master's degree in 1931. Martha was a member of Zata Tau Alpha. Martha taught in public school at Camden-Frontier and St. Johns. She was hired in her first teaching position because she could also coach basketball. She married Harold "Red" Lundy on Aug. 17, 1940, a Dodge dealer and a tool and die manufacturer, who died in 1987. They resided in St. Johns. Music was a very large part of her life. She was a lifelong piano player and teacher, organist at several churches in St. Johns and a choir member in St. Johns and Ormond Beach, Fla., where she spent many winters in retirement with her husband, Red. Since 1991, Martha received care at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City, where she continued to play the piano. Martha was a golfer, lifeguard, swimming instructor, and an avid sports fan, especially for the University of Michigan teams. Other interests included playing bridge, which she and her husband did with their many friends in St. Johns "dinner club." Martha is survived by three sons, Charles (Barb) Lundy of Xenia, Ohio, Douglas (Cathy) Lundy of Traverse City and Robert Lundy of East Lansing. She dearly loved her grandchildren, Nicole and Matt, and was so pleased that Nicole follows her in her love of music, and Matt is a "M Go Blue" fan. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Emory "Skip" (Theresa) Lundy of Kewadin; sister-in-law, Jennie Johnson of South Haven; childhood friend and sister-in-law, Lauretta Lundy of Corvallis, Ore.; and cousin, R. S. Griffin of South Haven. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Elk Rapid Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, 312 Pine St., Elk Rapids. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids. The family suggests memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church of St. Johns, First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach, Fla. or the Martha Lundy endowed scholarship at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen. Donald B. Nash Died July 15, 2000 MAPLE CITY - Donald B. Nash, 88, of Maple City, died Saturday. He was the beloved husband of the late Jean L.; dear father of Jane (Terry) Marsh, Donna Oestreich, Shelly (Greg) Kuula; and the late Susan (Denn) Nason. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Burial will be in Maple City at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, in the family cemetery. Lyllian Karoline St. Clair Died July 16, 2000 LANSING - Lyllian Karoline St. Clair, of Lansing and formerly of Traverse City, passed away Sunday. Lyllian was born March 31, 1904, in Lansing. Lyllian and her first husband, Aurthor A. Koehler, owned and operated a Bait and Shoe Repair shop in Houghton Lake. She then worked and retired from MSU in Cafeteria Services. She is survived by four grandchildren, Sandie (Ken) Furlong of Vermontville, Pam (Ron) Herendeen of Grand Rapids, Minn., Aurthor (Bonnie) Koehler of Dorr and Tamara Roland of Henrietta; one stepdaughter, Betty (Carlos) Carrillo; 16 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild. She is proceeded in death by her first husband, Aurthor A. Koehler in 1960; second husband, George E. St. Clair in 1966; one son, Arthur D. Koehler in 1995; one great-grandson, Randy Grant; and a special friend, Devere Wheeler. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home in Lansing. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, July 20, at the funeral home. Margaret M. Tuller Died July 18, 2000 GRAND RAPIDS - Margaret M. Tuller, 96, of Grand Rapids, died Monday. She is survived by her children, Rev. John J. Tuller of Saluda, NC, Mrs. Marjorie (H. Louis) Dubay of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Mary Jane (Leo) Chapman and Mrs. Joyce (Richard) Majewski - both of Kalamazoo; sisters, Louis Round of Cleveland, Ga. and Eileen Fisher of Apple Valley, Calif., 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter, Morgan. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 20, at St. Ann's Home Chapel, 2161 Leonard St. NW, Grand Rapids, with Rev. Dennis A. Wagner presiding. Webb Died July 16, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Mildred T. Webb, 92, of Traverse City, died Friday at home following a brief illness. Born July 20, 1907, in Portland, Ore., she was the daughter of Robert Hamilton and Hattie Litchfield Thomas. On Nov. 23, 1929, in Kelso, Wash., she married Farwell C. (Jack) Webb of Sturgis. Teaching, learning and sharing were at the heart of Mildred's life. After she graduated from Oregon State University in 1926, she became a teacher of home economics and languages in Oregon, Michigan and Ohio. She coached her high school to the State Basketball Championship in Oregon, taught low income mothers about nutrition and cooking during World War II in Grand Rapids, gave lectures and workshops on flower arranging around the world, led Bible study classes and lectured on conservation and horticulture on TV and radio. Her life was one of learning and sharing her knowledge. Even though blind and weak she was learning, teaching and helping others every day until she died. Mildred was a charter member of an early Japanese Ikebana Chapter in Ohio. When she moved to Traverse City, she founded the Mizuwmi Chapter of Ikebana International. She was a teacher and mentor for many in this elegant art of Japanese flower arranging as a certified teacher of the Ikenobo School. She was an accredited master judge in the National Council of State Garden Clubs and life member of both the Ohio and Michigan Federation of Garden Clubs. She was a member of Friendly Garden Club and later was a founder of the Ma-Me-Ne-Sewong Garden Club in Traverse City. Though legally blind and with support from others, she judged a number of recent flower exhibitions including those at the Grand Traverse County Fair. She was always an active and giving participant in all the communities in which she lived. She was a costume designer designing costumes for many children's performances in Cleveland and for the Cherry County Playhouse. She participated in the Council on World Affairs, Habitat for Humanity, RSVP, Love, Inc., Northwestern Michigan Environmental Action Council, led efforts to maintain BATA transport service in Long Lake Township and was active in the preservation efforts of Long Lake's South Island. She was a member of Friends Church in Long Lake Township. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Urick of Traverse City; son, Dr. Thomas R. Webb of Berkeley, Calif.; six grandchildren; six great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Farwell; her parents; sister, Genevieve; and brother, Robert. A gathering of family and friends will take place at a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Long Lake Friends Church with Pastor Keith Huffman officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hartford on Sunday. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Komesu Memorial of the Dennos Museum at Northwestern Michigan College or to the Long Lake Friends Church. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. flag Peter D. Wilson Died July 17, 2000 BATTLE CREEK - Peter D. Wilson, 72, of Battle Creek, died Monday at his home. Born April 18, 1928, in Detroit, he was the son of Arthur W. and Grace (Henderson) Wilson. On Aug. 2, 1958, in Detroit, he married the former Mildred M. Miller, who preceded him in death on March 2, 1994. Peter moved to Battle Creek in 1963 from Empire. He served during World War II and the Korean Conflict as a U.S. Marine. He also served during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Air Force. He was employed at the American Fibrit Co. in Battle Creek for eight years, retiring in 1990 and also worked for HB Sherman Eaton's & Clark Equipment Co. in Battle Creek. Peter was a member of the VFW Post 565 and American Legion Post 298 in Battle Creek. He is survived by two sons, Thomas J. Wilson of Battle Creek and Jimmie R. LaForest of Suttons Bay; four daughters, Diana M. Kohler of Suttons Bay, Carrie M. Girod of East St. Louis, Ill., and Sandy M. Oakland and Cindy M. Barney - both of Battle Creek; 19 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Grace Standke. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Glenn Huisinga of First Baptist Church of Springfield officiating. Military honors will be under the auspices of the American Legion Post 298. Burial will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Good Samaritan Hospice in Battle Creek. |
