ANDERSON 'HAROLD' ADAMS, 94, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Grand Traverse Pavillions.
      Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      LEROY JAMES CRULL, 64, of Grayling, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, in Grayling. A masonary construction field supervisor, he was born July 13, 1935, in Armada.
      Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel in Grayling. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
     
      FRANCES JACKSON, 63, of Mancelona, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 2, at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service at the funeral home.
     
      EARL SMITH WARD, 95, of Frankfort, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at his residence. He was born Oct. 28, 1904, in Corydon, Ind.
      Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at a later date. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of arrangements.
     
      Col. John 'Jack' Unsworth Allen
      Died May 28, 2000
      WASHINGTON, D.C. - John "Jack" Unsworth Allen passed away Sunday in Washington DC.
      The son of Thomas Allen and Jean Unsworth, he was born April 19, 1913, in Calumet.
      He graduated from Calumet High School and Michigan Tech and earned his Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from MIT in 1947.
      He was commissioned in the Regular Army, Corps of Engineers in 1937. He married Wilma Hoover, of Seattle, on Oct. 22, 1938. He was given command of the 188th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Army, by General George Patton during World War II. He was awarded the French Croix De Guerre by General De Gaulle and received the Bronze Star for valor. Later, he served in Washington, D.C., and instructed at the Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He retired as a Colonel in 1961
      After retirement he worked as the Director of Urban Development for the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was instrumental in the acquisition of property for construction of Riverfront Stadium.
      He and Wilma moved to Traverse City, Mich., in 1975. He was active in the "Learning Partners" - a group of adults who tutor elementary children on a one-to-one basis. He befriended many boys from one-parent families, both in and out of school and coached others for the State Math contests. He was a "Learning Partner" primarily at Cherry Knoll and Traverse Heights schools. His tutored students consistently won first place in Math and Spelling contests.
      In 1990, he and Wilma moved from Traverse City to Knollwood in Washington, D.C.
      His greatest contribution to the world, which received no earthly recompense, lies in his numerous, uncounted 'Good Samaritan' acts of assistance, kindness, compassion and support to all with whom he came in contact. He gave unselfishly of himself and his means to many, and is remembered for this wonderful example of unconditional love for mankind.
      He was predeceased by his wife Wilma (Hoover) in 1995.
      He is survived by sister, Catharine "Kay" Horning of Traverse City. Mich.; children, Sydney "Jill" McLeod Allen of Provo, Utah, John (Sheila) Allen of Springfield, Va., Tom (Shirley) Allen Phoenix, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren
      Inurnment will be in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery.
     
      John C. Bayne
      Died May 28, 2000
      MAPLE CITY - John C. Bayne, 75, of Maple City died Sunday.
      Born Jan. 18, 1925, in Detroit, he was the son of John C. and Elizabeth (Hutcheson) Bayne.
      On July 24, 1945, in Livonia, he married Mary Jacqueline Melanson.
      John served as a Merchant Marine on the Great Lakes and in the Pacific. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in the South Pacific. He was employed at Ford Motor Company for 35 years. A former resident of Westland, he had been a resident of the Maple City area since 1984. He was a volunteer fireman for 15 years for Nankin Township and later volunteered at the Leland Historical Museum. John was a former member of the Grand Traverse Highlanders.
      Survivors include his wife, Mary Jacqueline of Maple City; three sons, Michael John (Marianne) Bayne, William James Bayne, and John Charles Bayne III - all of Westland; a daughter, Maryann (Robert) Sheldon of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Neave of Frankenmuth and Reba Morber of Waterford Township; a brother, Dr. Robert Bayne of St. Cloud, Minn.; and 13 grandchildren.
      John was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Clara Lustig.
      Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
      A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Maple City; the Rev. Chad Zielinski will serve as celebrant. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to Cedar Fire and Rescue.

      Irene M. Clark
      Died May 30, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Irene M. Clark, 75, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Nov. 7, 1924, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Wesley and Laura (Dean) Clark. On July 15, 1944, in Traverse City, she married William Clark.
      Irene was a member of Living Hope Assembly of God. She enjoyed time with her family.
      She is survived by her husband; son, James W. Clark of Lansing; two granddaughters; stepmother, Sadie Milks of Buckley; many nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Laura Clark.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Darrel McKeel officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens with Rev. Estel Clark conducting the committal service.

      Thomas L. Cussans
      Died May 20, 2000
      BEULAH - Thomas L. Cussans, 82, of Beulah and formerly of Mt. Morris, died Saturday, May 20, at McLaren Hospice Residential Unit.
      Tom was born June 9, 1917, in Flint, the son of Leslie and Agnes (Hansen) Cussans. He married Madonna Nolan on Nov. 22, 1945. They met while both of them were serving in Italy during World War II.
      Tom was discharged in 1946 after four years as a Major in the 88th Infantry Division receiving the Distinguished Service Cross. He owned Tom Cussan's Bar for 25 years and retired in 1981 after five years in sales at Simm's Chevrolet, moving to Beulah on Crystal Lake. Tom was an avid sports fan and will be remembered for promoting the first World Championship Boxing Match (Willie Pep vs. Jock Leslie) at Flint. His love of amateur and professional athletic contests included the promotions of the Flint Blue Devils Football Team and the Flint Golden Gloves. His greatest love was golf and he was captain of the Central High 1936 golf team which won the State Class A championship. He was a member and club champion of Brookwood and Clio Golf Clubs and a current member of Pinecroft Golf Club at Beulah.
      He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Madonna; his children, Catherine (Terence) Mercer of Flint, Kevin (Mary) Cussans of Flushing and Patrick Cussans of Castle Rock, Colo.; grandchildren, Bret Mercer, Erin (Todd) Fettig, Mark (Rebecca) Cussans, Kelly, Grant and Lori Cussans of Flint; great-grandson, Maxwell Cussans; and a brother, Jerome of Flint.
      He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas K. in 1990.
      Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at McElduff Funeral Home in Benzonia. A gathering of family and friends will be from 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home until the time of service. Burial will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grand Traverse Hospice or Benzie Area Historical Museum.

      Jenny Lynn Miller
      Died May 31, 2000
      ALMA - Jenny Lynn Miller, 66, of Alma, passed away Wednesday at Gratiot Community Hospital.
      Jenny was born May 28, 1934, in Chicago, the daughter of John S. and Lureen (Meyer) Harpster. She grew up in Memphis, Tenn. She graduated from Memphis State University with a degree in elementary education and began her teaching career in Jackson. After teaching for several years she met her future husband Charles W. Miller. They were married April 13, 1957. Together they raised three children moving from Jackson to Grand Rapids, Traverse City and then to Alma in 1976. Jenny continued to teach in the Riverdale Elementary School and the ACE (Alternative Choices Education) program through Alma Public School. She continued on with her education earning her masters degrees in remedial reading and guidance and counseling from Central Michigan University. She then worked as a guidance counselor with the Alma Middle School, retiring in 1991.
      After her retirement, she spent winters in St. Simons Island, Ga. for seven years. While there she was active with the Quilters Guild and the Fiber Arts Guild.
      She and her husband spent many summers before and after retirement in Traverse City. She was an active volunteer with the First Congregational Church and helped troubled youth through the Traverse City Probate Courts.
      Jenny is survived by her husband, Charles; two daughters, Gayle (Douglas) Krieger of Bath, Alison (Kevin) Jerome of Ithaca; one son, Kevin (Carla) Miller of Hudsonville; five granddaughters, Jenny, Lindsay, Marcy, Katie and Elizabeth; one brother, John (Cathy) Harpster III of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a sister, Sandra (Curtis) Owens of Camden, SC.
      Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the First Presbyterian Church in Alma with Rev. Jeffrey O'Neill officiating. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home in Alma. Memorial services will also be held Sunday, June 4, at 12:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Traverse City with interment in the Congregational Church Memorial Gardens.
      The Miller family requests that memorial contributions be made to Gratiot Area Hospice through the Gratiot County United Way.

      Myron Clarence 'Gov'
      Petrowski
      Died January 9, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Myron Clarence 'Gov' Petrowski, 79, former resident of Cedar and West Palm Beach, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 9, at the Grayling Nursing Center following a three month illness.
      Born March 23, 1920, in Cedar, he was the son of Florian and Martha (Osie) Petroskey. He attended school in Cedar and graduated from Traverse City High School in 1939.
      Myron served six years in World War II as a sergeant in the U.S. Marines in the Pacific Theater and two years in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1975, Myron married Colleen Miller.
      Myron is survived by his son, Rick; sister-in-law, Amelia (Emily) Petroskey; two stepsons, Bob and Jim; two stepdaughters, Terry and Tracey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen, in July, 1999; his parents, Florian and Martha; six brothers, Edwin, Frank, Clement, Aloize, Kelly and Joseph; and five sisters, Regina Send, Irene Sbonek, Selma Schettek, Anastasia Wozniak and Margaret Ojala.
      A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Isadore with the Rev. Reynaldo Garcia serving as celebrant. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery with full military rites by the VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      THOMAS L. CUSSANS, 82, of Beulah and formerly of Mt. Morris, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at McLaren Hospice Residential Unit. Cremation has taken place.

      LEOTA M. BOWERS, 78, of Coldwater, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at Laurels of Coldwater.

      Sondra 'Cindy' M. McNabb
      Died June 1, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Sondra "Cindy" Marie McNabb went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Munson Medical Center.
      Cindy was born on Jan. 22, 1941, in Ypsilanti, Mich., to Virgil and Marie Appleton. She moved to Elberta, where she grew up, and graduated from Benzonia High School in 1959. She was preceded in death by both parents and a brother, Virgil D. "Rocky" Appleton.
      She married Michael McNabb on May 29, 1986. He survives her.
      She also is survived by her brother, Dennis Appleton of Elberta; a son, Kevin (Sherry) Cornell of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Dawn (Charles) Jackson of Auburn Hills; a stepdaughter, Rachel McNabb of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Annalycia and Tannaleah Cornell, and Brittany, Bethany and Briana Jackson.
      Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2000, at St. Francis Catholic Church.
      Cindy touched many people's lives through her caring love and incredible spirit. She also was known as the "loving lady." Her enthusiasm and joy for life was an inspiration for everyone who met her. She will be greatly missed by all of her family, friends and community.
      Memorials may be directed to the St. Francis Emergency Fund or the Father Fred Foundation.

      Donald R. Hoogerhyde
      Died May 29, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Donald R. Hoogerhyde, 83, of Traverse City, died Monday.
      Born on Dec. 20, 1916 in Grand Rapids, he was the son of John and Nina (Williams) Hoogerhyde. On Aug. 6, 1938, in Dearborn, he married Ella Mae Chaboude. She died on Sept. 21, 1999.
      Donald retired from Ford Motor Co. in 1973, after 37 years of service. He loved his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, rocks, jewelry and building with wood.
      He is survived by his sons, Wesley (Kim) Hoogerhyde, and Gerald (Pam) Hoogerhyde, all of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Billy, Kenny, and Donny; two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Christine; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Donald was preceded in death by a son, Russell Hoogerhyde.
      A private family service was held, with interment in the Cadillac Memorial Gardens West Cemetery, Westland. Arrangements are being handled by the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

      David J. Alexander Jr.
      Died May 31, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - David Joseph Alexander Jr., 32, of Traverse City, passed away Wednesday at his father's home following a battle with cancer which began when he was 3 years of age.
      David was born on May 7, 1968, in Detroit, the son of David J. Alexander Sr. and Barbara L. (Dennis) Alexander and moved to Traverse City with his parents in 1977.
      A 1986 graduate of Traverse City Central High School, David earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 1990 from Michigan State University. He then furthered his education at Baker College, Ferris State University and Northwestern Michigan College to obtain the necessary accounting requirements to sit for the Certified Public Accountant exam, which he was planning to take last month.
      During the last five years, David was a sales associate at Dunham's, where he was affectionately known as "Rock." He shared varied interests, but his hobbies included collecting comic books, old records and antiques from the 50s era. He also enjoyed playing golf, fishing and bird hunting. An avid sports fan who enjoyed football, hockey and baseball, David especially enjoyed basketball and knew all the stats associated with the sports. A person who enjoyed jazz, David also enjoyed all kinds of music.
      David is survived by his father, David J. Alexander Sr. and his fiancee Pam Schrouder of Traverse City; his mother, Barbara L. Alexander and her friend Geoffrey Williams of Traverse City; a sister, Michele Weber and her friend, Eric Gibson, of Traverse City; a nephew, Landon Weber; his paternal grandparents, George and Rose Alexander of Sterling Heights; his former brother-in-law, Keith Weber, of Traverse City; aunts and uncles, A.P. "Peggy" and Greg Blackrick of Rockford, David and Betty Dennis of Pere Marquette River, Milan Alexander of Rochester, George and Marcia Alexander of Rochester, Sue and Jon Chesney of Muskegon; his cousins, Kristen, Susan, Roslyn, Jenny, Brian, Rachel, Charlie and Leigh; a great-aunt and uncle Adair and Mickey Alexander of Grosse Pointe; and his close friends, Ken Carps, Char Simmet, Kris Spencer, Dana Brown and Dawn Schmelzer.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Services for David will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Catherine Woods Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Byers Cemetery in Schoolcraft County in the Upper Peninsula.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Irene M. Clark, 75, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

      Died May 31, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - A. "Harold" Adams, 94, a five-year resident of Traverse City and formerly of Livonia, Lake City and Quincy, died Wednesday at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born May 23, 1906, in Sugar Grove, Ohio, he was the son of Anderson Eli and Catherine M. (Breese) Adams.
      He married Ruth Kathryn Shumaker on Aug. 18, 1928, in Bowling Green, Ohio. She survives him.
      He was employed by Kmart Corp. and retired in 1969 as district manager. In 1962, he had the distinction of managing the first Kmart in the United States, located in Garden City, Mich. He loved his family and his work and also enjoyed playing the piano as a hobby.
      Surviving, besides his wife, is one daughter, Carole (Ronald) Gohman of Macungie, Pa.; four sons, Harold (Sue) Adams of West Bloomfield, Mich.; Larry (Glenda) Adams of Acworth, Ga.; Dennis (Sharon) Adams of Quincy, Ill.; and Dr. Damon (Cristina) Adams of Traverse City; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      Harold was preceded in death of two sisters, Eileen Shafer and Ruth Snyder; and a grandson John Adams.
      Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. Dean Salyer will officiate. Burial will follow in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorials may be directed to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Salvation Army or Interlochen Center for the Arts.
     
      ROBERT E. CHMIELEWSKI, 78, of Traverse City, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at home.
      Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      ELSIE H. FAUVER, 98, of Muskegon and formerly of Bear Lake, died Thursday, June 1, 2000. She was born Nov. 7, 1901, in Chicago.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Edwards Funeral Home in Bear Lake. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Bear Lake.
     
      WALTER 'FRANK' STANTON III, 64, of Traverse City, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at home.
      Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 5, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A full obituary will be in the Sunday Record-Eagle.
      Roger D. Mann
      Died May 31, 2000
      MIDLAND - Roger D. Mann, 65, of Midland and formerly of Rapid City, died Wednesday at Mid-Michigan Medical Center.
      Born April 3, 1935, in Coloma, he was the son of the late Joseph and Edna (Krogel) Mann and was a graduate of Rapid City High School in the class of 1953. He married the former Gay Guy April 23, 1955. She predeceased him on Oct. 24, 1994.
      Mr. Mann was employed by the CSX Railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church and enjoyed collecting trains. He was well known for having his newspaper route and taking the time to enjoy his grandchildren.
      Surviving are his children, Karen Mann of Sanford, David Mann and his wife Peggy, and Kurt Mann and his wife Lee - all of Midland; four grandchildren, Holly, David Jr. and Rachel Mann and Megan Mann; four sisters, Violet Stachnik and her husband Robert of Maple City, Norena Scott and her husband Alan of Rapid City, Nancy Moran and her husband Richard of Bellaire, and Francy Moran and her husband Al of Rapid City.
      Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, June 5, from the Messiah Lutheran Church. Rev. John Langewisch and Rev. Greg Finke will both officiate with burial to follow in the Midland Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Mann's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, Midland, on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from noon until the time of services.

      Sally (Goodson) Roth
      Died May 31, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Sally G. Roth, 66, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born June 6, 1933, in Oklahoma City, Okla., she was the daughter of Elbert and Lucille (Manning) Goodson. After graduating from Classen High School of Oklahoma City, she attended Mills College in Oakland, Calif.
      Sally married Louis A. Roth in 1952 and they settled in Webster Groves, Mo. Summers were spent on Torch Lake and her love of northern Michigan prompted her to move her permanent residence here later in life.
      She loved to travel, read, do needlework and entertain. Most of all she loved young people; of course her own, but the door was always open to everyone, as evidenced by the many "extra" kids who called her Mom. Her gentle smile and grace will be missed by all.
      Sally is survived by her two children, Louis R. (Katie) Roth and Sherry R. (Jeff) Jones; two daughters-in-law, Rebecca G. Roth and Elizabeth Roth Kershner; and her seven grandchildren, Catherine G. Roth, Sally T. Roth, Louis R. Roth, Anne E. Roth, Paul A. Roth, Clare A. Roth and Mark B. Jones.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved sons, Mark A. Roth and John T.G. Roth; and husband, Louis A. Roth.
      Funeral arrangements are being handled by Gerber Chapel of Webster Groves, Mo. Services will be held on Monday, June 5, in St. Louis, Mo. Memorial services will be held at Torch Lake this August.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Michael Francis Shigwadja, 15, of Traverse City, died Thursday.
      Born May 27, 1985, in Northport, he was the son of Michael W. and Christine (Shomin) Shigwadja. Michael was a student at Traverse City West High School.
      Michael is survived by his parents; brothers and sisters, Edward Shigwadja, Siouxsie Shigwadja, Robert Banzzini, Krystal Shomin, Alexandro Banzzini and Dallas Loredo; maternal grandparents, Frank and Vivian Shomin; paternal grandmother, Jean Ann Martinez; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
      Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today, Sunday and Monday at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Marshall Collins officiating. Burial will be in Kateri Tekakwitha Cemetery.
      Sheena Mae White
      Died June 1, 2000
      SUTTONS BAY - Sheena Mae White, 17, of Suttons Bay, died Thursday as a result of an automobile accident.
      Born Jan. 3, 1983, in Grand Rapids, she was the daughter of Wendland White and the late Elaine S. Mashka.
      Sheena was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and a fancy dancer at Pow-wows. She was also an accomplished artist and loved to draw.
      She is survived by her father, Wendland White; adoptive mother, Delores Hill; brothers Sherman Mashka, Curtis White and Martin Garcia; grandparents, Jim (Maryan) Mashka and Joe (May) White; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
      She was preceded in death by her mother, Elaine Susan Mashka.
      Visitation will be anytime from now until the time of service at the Youth Center in Peshawbestown. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, June 5, at the youth center. Rev. Donnie Dowd will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena.
      Melvin R. Wilson Jr.
      Died June 1, 2000
      SUTTONS BAY - Melvin R. Wilson, Jr., 18, of Suttons Bay, died Thursday in Leelanau County.
      Born Jan. 11, 1982, in Traverse City, he was the son of Melvin Wilson, Sr. and Lena Smith.
      Melvin was employed at Tri-O-Deck of Ontario, Canada. He was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. Melvin enjoyed weightlifting, basketball, running and spending time with his friends.
      He is survived by his parents; fiancee, Elena Reyes of Suttons Bay; twin brothers, John and Josh Wilson and brother, Bryan Smith - all of Suttons Bay; maternal grandmother, Agnes Paul of Traverse City; and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.
      He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
      Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today and 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Kewadin Indian Mission Church. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 5, at the Kewadin United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom John officiating. Interment will be in Kewadin Indian Mission Cemetery.

      DORIS M. SOUDERS, 88, of Texas and formerly of Grayling, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, in Nassua Bay, Texas. She was born Dec. 4, 1911, in Carsonville, Mich.

      Holland Albert 'Bud' Smith
      Died June 2, 2000
      MIDLAND - Holland Albert "Bud" Smith, 82, of Midland, died peacefully Friday evening at his home.
      He was born June 10, 1917, in Highland Park, the son of the late Clayton and Catherine "Cassie" (Lewis) Smith and graduated from Midland High School in the class of 1937. He married Glenna Johnston on Oct. 11, 1940, in Midland. She predeceased him on April 30, 1997.
      Mr. Smith was employed by the Dow Corning Corporation for 42 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church in Midland, was a life member of the Midland Elks BPOE No. 1610 in Midland and enjoyed woodworking.
      Surviving are his two sons, Christopher Smith and his wife Colleen and Lonny Joe Smith and his wife Christi - all of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Craig Smith and his wife Vivian, Dan Smith and his wife Lisa, Cindy Martin and her husband Mike and Gordon and Mikaela Smith; and two great-granddaughters, Morgan and Amber.
      In addition to his parents and wife Glenna, he was predeceased by one brother, Rolland Smith.
      Mr. Smith's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, Midland, on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. An Elk's Lodge of Sorrow will be conducted at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Monday evening. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, from the St. John's Episcopal Church in Midland. Rev. Father Bruce McNab and Rev. Joan T. McNab will both officiate with cremation to follow. Graveside inurnment services will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Midland Cemetery.

      GENESEE - Gerald David Plamondon, Sr., 62, of Genesee, went to be with the Lord on Saturday at his residence.
      Mr. Plamondon was born Aug. 24, 1937, in Buckley, the son of David Joseph and Frances Revella (Weathers) Plamondon. He was united in marriage to Vania Vee Denkins on Nov. 29, 1955.
      Gerald retired from AC Spark Plug in 1991 after 30 years of service. He had served in the U.S. Navy.
      Survivors include his wife, Vania; children, Sheila Marie Campbell of Flint, Gerald David Plamondon, Jr. and wife Helen of Mt. Morris, Richard Allen Plamondon of Mt. Morris, Albert Marvin Plamondon and wife Jan of Mikado, Bruce Kelly Plamondon and wife Collette of Elk Rapids and Bethany Revella Thierbach and husband Ronald of Mt.       TRAVERSE CITY - Elsie A. Henning, 86, of Traverse City, died Friday at Bortz Health Care.
      Born Oct. 28, 1913, she was the daughter of Julius and Rose (Boika) Kanarske. On March 14, 1942, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Royal Oak, she married Edward Henning, who preceded her in death in February, 1999.
      Elsie was a wonderful Christian lady who found comfort and strength in her family and faith. In her younger years she enjoyed volunteering at church, and especially working with children. She also enjoyed gardening at her home on Spider Lake.
      She is survived by a son, Elton (Carol) Henning of Kingsley; daughter, Diana Thorpe of Traverse City; two sisters, Shirley (Raymond) Weber of Traverse City and Florence Castle of Hartland; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City with Rev. Donald V. Engebretson officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Walter "Frank" Stanton III, 64, of Traverse City, died Friday.
      Born Sept. 7, 1935, in Dillon, SC, he was the son of Walter F. and Minnie (McLemore) Stanton II. On May 11, 1968, in Detroit, he married the former Sharon Finkelstein.
      Frank served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958 and during the Korean War. He was employed as a truck driver for over 30 years, retiring in 1997 from H. Cox & Sons in Traverse City. He was a member of Grawn United Methodist Church.
      He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Traverse City; a son, Dan (Shelly) Stanton of Traverse City; and his mother, Minnie McKinnis of Statesville, NC.
      He was preceded in death by his father.
      Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 5, at Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Dan Biteman officiating, with military honors under the auspices of VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Grawn.

      Died June 5, 2000
      HELENA TOWNSHIP - Donna Eva Champney, 74, of Helena Township, Antrim County, died on Monday at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Alden United Methodist Church in Alden. The Rev. Richard Matson will officiate.
      Donna was born on July 24, 1925 in Flint, the daughter of Coldon "Don" and Sylvia (Schlecte) Woodruff. On January 26, 1946, in Flint, she married Clark Champney. He died on April 29, 2000.
      Donna had worked for the Secretary of State Office in Garden City for numerous years and then at the Michigan Department of Mental Health in Livonia for five years. She retired in 1985.
      She lived in the Garden City and Westland area for 40 years. In 1986, she moved north to the Alden area.
      She was a member of the Alden United Methodist Church.
      Donna is survived by four children, Dennis (Jane) Champney of Hebron, Kentucky, Don (Evelyn) Champney of Sparta, Cheryl (Dave) Sprik of Bellaire, and Carol Putnam of Asheville, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother Jim (Anne) Woodruff of Rapid City; and two sisters, Margorie (Leon) Chapman of Rapid City and Louise Dillenbeck of Flint.
      She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Marion Briniger.
      The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona.

      Robert E. 'Bob' Chmielewski
      Died June 2, 2000
      EAST BAY TOWNSHIP - Robert E. "Bob" Chmielewski, 78, of East Bay Township died Friday at home.
      Born Nov. 28, 1921, in Detroit, he was the son of John and Martha (Gorski) Chmielewski.
      On Sept. 4, 1948, in Detroit, he married Delphine H. Mack.
      Bob served with the Civilian Conservation Corps from July 1939 to December 1941. Serving with the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, he was stationed in England where they supported troops in Normandy, Ardennes and Rhineland. He worked for Cone Drive Gear for 25 years before retiring in 1983. Bob was a member of the Cone Drive Golf League and of the National Rifle Association. A lifelong resident of northern Michigan, he enjoyed golf, reading, hunting and shooting.
      Survivors include his wife, Delphine of East Bay Township; four children, Craig (Debbie) Chmielewski of Traverse City, Kim Shalda of Traverse City, Mark (Pam) Chmielewski of Traverse City, and MaryAnn (William) Sorvisto of Hancock; a sister, Geri (George) Sheprack of Sterling Heights; 10 grandchildren, Lynda (William) Freet, Lisa (William) Sutton, Larissa Chmielewski, Michelle (Scott) Werly, Jennifer North, Jason North, David Chmielewski, Daniel Chmielewski, Jeremy Sorvisto, and Ashley Sorvisto; six great-grandsons; and special family friend, Daniel Marois.
      Bob was preceded in death by an infant son, Todd and a sister, Doris Kryston.
      A time for friends and family to celebrate Robert's life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Burial will be in South Boardman Cemetery.

      Emma Lewless
      Died June 4, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Emma Lewless passed away Sunday in Traverse City at the age of 90.
      Emma was born February 7, 1910, in Saginaw, Michigan.
      She was married to William Frederick Lewless on December 3, 1955. Frederick predeceased her February 1, 1987.
      Emma was the daughter of David and Sophie (Grossman) Zittel.
      She leaves one sister, Helene Grayson of Saginaw, Michigan.
      Emma was predeceased by one sister, Carolyn Dork, and one brother, Frederick Zittel.
      She also leaves four nephews and their families.
      Emma was employed by Jacobson's as the manager of their cosmetics department for 25 years. After retirement, she and Frederick moved to Pharr, Texas, with Emma returning eight weeks ago to Traverse City, Michigan.
      A Celebration of Life service will be conducted by the Rev. David Gabel for the immediate family and will take place at the home of Ronald and Marilyn Dork of Rapid City, Michigan, on Sunday, June 11, 2000.
      Cremation will take place at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City with interment at Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum in Saginaw.

      Died June 5, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Dorothy D. Long, 88, died Monday.
      Born April 21, 1912, in Pontiac, Ill., she was the daughter of Alexander Ewing and Ida (Lower) Dunlap.
      On Dec. 29, 1952, in Indiana, she married Charles F. Long.
      A resident of Traverse City for 15 years, she was a former resident of Farmington Hills. Dorothy had worked as a third-grade school teacher in Traverse City and retired in 1972 from Dearborn Public Schools.
      She attended University High School in Ann Arbor and graduated from the University of Michigan. She did graduate study at Northwestern University and the University of California at Berkeley. Dorothy was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve at Smith College during World War II. She served as Communications Division officer of the Naval Supply Depot at San Pedro, Calif. She was discharged as a Lieutenant of the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1954. Dorothy was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
      Survivors include a son, Gary (Cindy) Long of Merritt; a sister-in-law, Ellen Dunlap of Chelsea, Mich.; and five grandchildren, Angela, Daniel, Karen, Heather, and Bethany Long.
      Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles in October, 1994; a sister, Ann Butler; and two brothers, Dwight Dunlap and Wayne Dunlap.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home; Dr. Homer Nye will officiate.

      Alma E. Sweeney

      HOLIDAY, Fla. - Alma E. Sweeney, 86, of Holiday, died Jan. 28, 2000, in Holiday.
      She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 147 in Traverse City, Mich.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, originally a Traverse City Masonic Lodge member who later transferred to Hayward, Wis. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Blanche (Davis) Hall, similarly a Traverse City Eastern Star member, and John Q. Hall, also a Traverse City Masonic Lodge member and former proprietor of the Hall Lumber Company in Traverse City. Besides her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra (Sweeney) Wilkie and a granddaughter, Lisa Michelle Wilkie, both of Hayward.
      She is survived by two sisters, Cleo (Hall) Isbister of Traverse City, Mich., and Betty (Hall) Peterson of Harlingen, Texas; one son, Jack Sweeney of Oldsmar, Fla.; and a grandson, Erik Wilkie, and three great-grandchildren of Hayward.
      A graveside service will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward at 2 p.m. today.

      James Burton 'Jim' Telgard
      Died June 1, 2000
      TUCSON, Ariz. - James Burton "Jim" Telgard, 72, died Thursday in Tucson.
      Jim was born Dec. 29, 1927, in Leland, Mich., to Martin and Leone Telgard.
      He was a lifelong resident of the village and spent the past 11 winters in Saddle Brooke, Ariz., his second home.
      On Nov. 10, 1950, he married Nancy Alto, who survives.
      Jim was an avid sports enthusiast who played high school basketball, pitched in Independent League baseball, bowled with and sponsored a bowling team and loved playing golf. He was known to occasionally perform delicate adjustments to a poorly performing club on the course, in mid-play. Many of his golf clubs ended up in the repair shop.
      He was a former member of the Traverse City Country Club and current member of Leland Country Club - and he raised tens of thousands of dollars to support the Leland Booster Club.
      After graduation from Leland High School, Jim attended Ball State in Muncie, Ind. He founded Jims Soda Bar, adjacent to his parents' restaurant, the Bluebird, in 1948. Jim left to establish Telgard Marine in 1960 where he used his considerable talents in wooden boat repair and refinishing. In 1966 he devoted himself to the Bluebird Restaurant, enlarging the building and expanding the business to statewide and national recognition. He was forced to retire in 1995 but remained an important presence at the Bluebird throughout the rest of his life.
      Jim was a member of the Leland Harbor Corporation which guided the construction of the new Leland Harbor. He was also a longtime school board member, past president of Leland Community Improvement Association, a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, a member of Catalina Lutheran Church in Arizona, and a helping hand to many community groups and projects.
      Throughout his life, Jim gave generously of his time, funds and labor to benefit his friends, neighbors and his beloved Leland. He had many friends from diverse social and economic groups and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Martin, in 1960, and mother, Leone, in 2000.
      He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons, Cris and Skip; granddaughter, Carolyn; grandson, Derek; sisters, Bonnie Orr and Eloise Fahs; nieces, Karen Siemers and Heidi Kruse; and Nephew, Tim Fahs.
      Private burial followed by a Celebration of Jim's Life will be announced.
      Jim was brought closer to God and was served the Lord's Supper in his home. The prayers from Jim's two congregations and friends was a great comfort to the family. Many thanks to all for your concern.

      Helen Bates
      Died April 17, 2000
      ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Helen Bates, 85, of Zephyrhills, Fla. and formerly of Traverse City, died on Monday, April 17.
      A native of Central Lake, she moved to Florida following her retirement from Munson Hospital with her husband Henry "Jess" Bates, who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1984.
      She is survived by three daughters, Caroline (Mrs. Wade) Wagoner of Zephyrhills, Fla., Luella (Mrs. Lyle) Leys of Dorr and Lillian Gibson of Grant; two sons, Henry (Diane) of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and Charles (Elizabeth) of Anchorage, Alaska; 20 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four half-sisters and one half-brother.
      Helen was cremated per her request and memorial services were held in Florida at the RLDS church on April 24. Local memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in Bowers Harbor Park for her family and friends.
      Clarence Herbert Hamann
      Died June 5, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Clarence Herbert Hamann, of Traverse City, passed away after a brief illness on Monday.
      Beloved father of Betsy Sermon of Essexville, Mr. Hamann was born in Zilwaukee, Mich. in 1914. He had retired from his career as owner and operator of the Monitor Hatchery outside Bay City and his partnership with Orville and Liela Milks in the Broadway Poultry Market in Bay City.
      His first wife, Nettie McCartney, his nephew Edward Riedy and great-granddaughter, Donna, predeceased him.
      He is survived by his sister, Liela Milks; daughter, Betsy, and her friend George Pauwels; grandson, Robert Thomas Sermon, Jr.; stepdaughter, Mary (Edward) Riedy; granddaughter, Annette Irene (Randy) Sievertson; and great-granddaughter Brigette Nicole Reynolds.
      In 1979 he married Joy Buor of Saginaw and moved to Traverse City. She predeceased him in 1989. Clarence will be sadly missed by his stepdaughters, Suzanne (Harold) Haskew and Constance (Erik) Swanson; and grandchildren Becky, Randy and Ray Fischer, Ruste (Robert) Wilke, Christine (Mike) Neirink, David Swanson; and his 11 great-grandchildren. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for his 21 years in Traverse City and will be greatly missed by his friends from the Trinity Seniors Group.

      EMPIRE - Axel Robert Johnson, 63, of Benzie County, Empire, died Sunday at his home.
      Born July 10, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Axel and Isa (Clauson) Johnson.
      Mr. Johnson graduated from General Motors Institute in 1958. He had 25 years of service with General Motors. He was then a partner in Kendall Electric for the next 20 years. When he became ill, he was CEO and Chairman of the Board of the Kendall Group. He had resided in this area for the last four 1/2 years. He was interested in cars, especially Corvettes, was an avid bridge player and enjoyed traveling to Aruba. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and his career. On Sept. 6, 1958, he married the former Eunice J. Brooker in Cleveland, Ohio.
      Survivors include his wife, Eunice; children, David (Cammie) Johnson of Denver, Eric (Ann) Johnson of South Lyon and Paula (Steven) Anderson of Minneapolis; his mother, Isa Johnson of Hope Village, Williamsburg; his grandchildren, Emily Johnson and Benjamin Johnson of Denver, Lauren Johnson of South Lyon and Cassandra Anderson, Constance Anderson and Kelly Anderson - all of Minneapolis.
      Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his father.
      A time of remembering Mr. Johnson will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

      TRAVERSE CITY - John C. Lardie, 78, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Monday.
      Born May 23, 1922, in Traverse City, he was the son of Isadore and Elizabeth (Zoulek) Lardie.
      John served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters. He was employed as a mechanic for Map-Pul Equipment for 40 years and enjoyed fishing. A member of the American Legion of Old Mission, he helped establish the Peninsula Township Fire Department.
      Survivors include two sons, Jack (Alice) and Jeff (Barb) Lardie - both of Traverse City; a daughter, Jill (Leroy) Hayes of Lake Ann; a brother, Isadore (Irene) Lardie of Traverse City; two sisters, Dorothy (Don) Bellows of Traverse City and Marrietta Ghering of Canada; loving companion, Isabelle Eisner and her children, three sons, William (Delores) Eisner of Traverse City, James (Helen) Eisner of Idaho and Raymond (Sandy) Eisner of Colorado; and four daughters, Theresa (Harlan) Maue of Traverse City, Ann (Ted) Zvirblis of Florida, Sharon Norton of Traverse City and Debra Moore of Florida; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and one brother.
      A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens with Rev. Paul Megge officiating. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

      Royce C. 'Dutch' Lueck
      Died May 20, 2000
      OCALA, Fla. - Royce C. "Dutch" Lueck, 87, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, in Ocala.
      Born April 29, 1913, in Mancelona, Mich., he was the son of Arthur and Emma Lueck. He worked in a defense plant during World War II in Detroit, Mich. and moved to Kewadin, Mich., in 1945, where he was a dairy farmer for many years. He also worked at Cone Drive Gear in Traverse City, Mich., until he retired in 1975.
      He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Lueck of Ocala; a son, Corky (RuthAnn) Lueck of Williamsburg, Mich.; daughters, Carolyn Sue (Tom) Bradford of Midland, Mich., Janice (Ken) Nordin of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Diane (K.C.) Gilbert of Owosso, Mich.; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Butch) Lueck of Kewadin, Mich.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      Dutch was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and his son "Butch" Lueck, in 1988.
      No services are planned at this time.

      Victor J. Woodhams Sr.
      Died June 5, 2000
      FIFE LAKE - Victor J. Woodhams, Sr., 75, of Fife Lake, died Monday at his home.
      Mr. Woodhams was a lifelong resident of Kalkaska County. He was a 1950 graduate of Michigan State University and taught school for a few years. He was a retired dairy farmer and mail carrier. Mr. Woodhams served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Land O' Lakes VFW Post 8684 and American Legion Post 225. He was also a member of the East Boardman United Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau, Kalkaska Soil Conservation Society, Rural Letter Carriers Association and a committee member of the Farm Services Agency. He enjoyed farming, dancing and being with his friends and family.
      Born in Kalkaska County on July 1, 1924, he was the son of Raymond and Julia Montgomery Woodhams. He married Gene Ryckman in Mt. Pleasant on June 18, 1949.
      Surviving are his wife, Gene; a son, V. James (Carolyn) Woodhams, Jr. of Fife Lake; his mother, Julia B. Woodhams of Kalkaska; a brother, Martin (Roberta) Woodhams of Kalkaska; an aunt, Esther Jones; and three grandchildren, Josiah Grant, Victor James III and Eliza Gail Woodhams.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with pastor Howard Seaver officiating. Burial will be in Lodi Cemetery in Kalkaska County.

      Albert Kingsley Brown
      Died June 5, 2000
      KALKASKA - Albert Kingsley Brown, 74, of Kalkaska, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Mr. Brown was a 1944 graduate of Kalkaska High School. He then earned his bachelors degree at Michigan State University and a masters degree at George Washington College. During World War II, he served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force, flying 38 missions over Europe. Prior to his retirement in 1975, he was employed as a soil conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Allegan, Big Rapids, Marshall and Traverse City. He served two terms as a Kalkaska County Commissioner.
      Mr. Brown was born in Kalkaska County on June 18, 1925, to Reed and Edvega Burgess Brown. On Oct. 30, 1948, in Boyne Falls, he was united in marriage with Catherine Fiel who survives.
      Also surviving are two sons, Dr. Albert (Virginia) Brown of Kalkaska and William (Betsey) Brown of Petoskey; three daughters, Dr. Sandra (Marty) Magy of San Diego, Calif., Catherine (Mandell) Allwiel of Linwood and Joanne (Hal) Steger of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; two brothers, Allen and Jim Brown - both of Kalkaska; a sister, Mary Smith of Kalkaska; and 12 grandchildren.
      One son, Oscar, and two brothers, Joe and John Brown, preceded him in death.
      Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, where a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church with Father Jim Holtz serving as celebrant. Interment will be in Excelsior Township Cemetery in Kalkaska County.

      Died June 6, 2000
      EMPIRE - Murray Blaine Foster, 78, of Empire, died Tuesday at his Glen Lake home.
      Born Dec. 17, 1921, in Pontiac, he was the son of Wesley and Alice (McIntosh) Foster. On Aug. 10, 1946, in Northville, he married the former Marie Lenore Angove, who survives. Murray and Marie both attended Michigan State University.
      Murray served four years in the U.S. Army in the European theater of operations during World War II. Before retiring from Dana Corporation, he and his family spent many memorable vacations at Glen Lake. His parents owned a cherry orchard near the Sand Dunes for many years.
      Survivors include his wife; son, David of Pontiac; daughters, Jill Wheaton of Carol Stream, Ill. and Jacqueline Magnusson of Manton, Ohio; and six grandsons.
      Private services will be held.
      Memorials may be directed to Empire Lions Club.

      Wanda Louise Kurtz

      THOMPSONVILLE - Wanda Louise Kurtz, 72, of Thompsonville, formerly of Jackson, passed away suddenly Tuesday.
      Wanda was a retired office manager from Adco Products.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard M., in 1981; and two brothers, Charles and Jimmy French.
      She is survived by three children, James R. (Doreen) Kurtz of Napoleon, Richard J. Kurtz of Thompsonville and Karen (Willie) Theisen of California; six grandchildren; and her brother, David French of Jackson.
      At her request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Nichols-Arthur Funeral Home, 820 Fifth Street, Michigan Center, Mich., with Rev. David L. Augenstein officiating.
      The family suggests contributions in her memory be made to a charity of one's choice.

      RAPID CITY - Cecil A. Tuller, 88, of Rapid City, died Tuesday at his residence in Rapid City.
      Born March 13, 1912, in Interlochen, he was the son of Wilbert and Anna (VanderHoof) Tuller. In November 1946, in Grand Traverse County, he married the former Ardis Day, who preceded him in death.
      Cecil retired from the U.S. Army as a sergeant first class after serving 20 years. He served in China during World War II and in the Korean War. He was a member of Torch Lake Assembly of God. Cecil enjoyed doing the crossword puzzles, watching TV, walking his dog, Duke, and being around family.
      Survivors include three sons, Daniel (Wanda) Tuller, Douglas (Beverly) Tuller and Dewayne Tuller - all of Rapid City; a brother, Timothy Coburn Tuller of California; seven grandchildren, Carol (Ward) Johnson, Jan Tuller, Daniel Tuller, Jr., Renae Tuller, Jamie (April) Norcross, Taren Tuller and Mindy Tuller; a great-grandson, Nicholas Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.
      Besides his wife, Ardis, he was preceded in death by a son, David Tuller; a daughter, Marcie Tuller, in infancy; four brothers, Cephas, Daniel, Samuel and Jesse Tuller; and three infant sisters.
      Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Torch Lake Assembly of God, where visitation will be prior to the service. Burial will follow at Clearwater Township Cemetery.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Tressie Glandeen Brackenridge, 86, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born March 16, 1914, in Viola, Ark., she was the daughter of William E. and Laura (Brison) Dodd. In 1948 in Huntsville, Ark., she married Thomas F. Brackenridge, who preceded her in death on April 17, 1963.
      A retired farmer, Glandeen moved to Traverse City from Eldorado Springs, Mo. in 1981. She was a member of the World Wide Church of God in Cadillac.
      She is survived by a sister, Maxine (Cecil) McGoon of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by both parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
      Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Eldorado Springs, Mo.
      Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Rose Marie Hatch

      LADY LAKE, Fla. - Rose Marie Hatch, 61, of Lady Lake, Fla., formerly of the Grand Rapids area, passed away Monday.
      Rose was a member of St. Timothy Catholic Church in Curtis where she was on the alter, worship and finance committees. She was also the former director of the Camp Fire Girls in Grand Rapids.
      She is survived by her husband, Vern R. Hatch; her children, Steven Hatch of Indiana, Laura Boyd of Battle Creek, Mich., Christine Riposo of Illinois, Elaine Hatch of Traverse City, Mich. and Karen Pinchot of Illinois; five grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Radomski of Grand Rapids.
      Mrs. Hatch reposes at the DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW in Wyoming, Mich., where the family will meet relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John Vianney Church with Father Larry King presiding. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

      GRAWN - Phyllis A. Marsh, 67, of Grawn, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born June 27, 1932, in Grawn, she was the daughter of Delbert and Elma (Nickerson) Saxton. On Nov. 23, 1951, in the Interlochen area, she married Fred W. Marsh, Jr.
      A lifelong resident of the area, Phyllis was a 1951 graduate of Traverse City High School. Over the years she worked as a secretary at several stores downtown. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Traverse City, where she was an Elder. A mother and homemaker, she enjoyed crocheting and especially enjoyed her children, grandchildren and friends. Phyllis also volunteered for many activities with her church and the Red Cross.
      Survivors include her husband; four children, Janice M. Marsh and companion Randy Hoffman of Traverse City, Sharon K. (Gary) Wilkins of Traverse City, Fred W. (Sandra) Marsh III of Traverse City and Ruth A. (David) White of Grand Rapids; eight grandchildren, Michael and Ann Wilkens, Fred IIII, David and Alicia Marsh and Emilee, Matthew and Annika White; her mother, Elma (Leroy) Wheelock of Traverse City; a brother, Marvin D. (Kay) Saxton of Grawn; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her father in 1968; and stepfather, Marvin H. Leggett in 1994.

      She is survived by her parents, Randall and Lisa Pugh of Grawn; maternal grandparents, Michael and Suzanne Coyne of Kingsley; paternal grandparents, Joel and Janet Pugh of Suttons Bay; maternal great-grandmother, Mary Steinebach of Kingsley; paternal great-grandparents, Donald and Marie Richards of Suttons Bay; uncle and aunt, Scott and Andrea Coyne of Lake Ann and their children, Brandon and Caleb; and uncle Michael Pugh of Suttons Bay.

      Rev. Clarence C. Wollin
      Died June 8, 2000
      LINDEN - Rev. Clarence C. Wollin, 86, of Linden, died Thursday at his residence.
      Rev. Wollin was born July 10, 1913, in Jefferson County, Wis., the son of Gustav and Alvina (Berger) Wollin. Rev. Wollin was a graduate of Moravian College and Seminary in Bethlehem, Pa. He was the pastor of various Moravian churches for 35 years, retiring in 1978. After retirement he continued to serve as an interim pastor for several Moravian churches and was the associate pastor of the Linden Presbyterian Church. Rev. Wollin was an active member of the Kiwanis Club in Linden.
      Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Esther; three children, Carl and wife Paula Wollin of Fenton, Ruth Wollin of Flint and Eunice Brady of Traverse City; sister, Irma Louise Lewis of Phoenix; four grandchildren, Timothy and wife Molly Wollin, Jennifer Brady, Ben Brady and Amanda Atherton; and two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Jacob Wollin.
      Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Linden Chapel, 209 E. Broad Street, Linden.       Died June 6, 2000
      COCOA, Fla. - Helen L. Fadely, 93, went to her Father on Tuesday, June 6, while residing at the Hibiscus House Care Center in Cocoa, Fla.
      Born in Bellevue, Ohio, on Dec. 19, 1906, she was a former 24 year resident of Hawthorne at Leesburg, Fla., moving there from Ohio in 1974. She and her late husband, Darrell, were frequent visitors to the Traverse City area while visiting their son Jan and family who formally resided in Alden. She and her husband also resided in Gaylord in the early 1950's.
      Helen was an accountant, music teacher and lay missionary during her working years. She and her late husband, Darrell, served two years in Liberia and one year in Botswana as lay missionaries for the Global Board of Ministries, United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Morrison United Methodist Church in Leesburg.
      Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell; an infant son, Richard; and a granddaughter, Lynn Fadely Nelson.
      She is survived by two sons, Jan E. and wife Avis, of Leesburg and Dr. Tony and wife Vera, of Cocoa, Fla.; eight grandchildren including Doug and Ben Fadely of Alden; and ten great-grandchildren including Joe and Missy Nelson of Suttons Bay.
      A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 18, at Whole Loaf Worship Center, 2609 N. Clearlake Road, Cocoa, Fla. Dr. Tony Fadely will lead the services.
      L. James 'Jim' Hagan
      Died June 8, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - L. James "Jim" Hagan, 54, of Traverse City, died Thursday at his home.
      Born Dec. 31, 1945, in Traverse City, he was the son of Charles Richard and Irene Berniece (Petroskey) Hagan.
      Jim was a member of the U.M. Alumni. He enjoyed Las Vegas, loved to travel and enjoyed sailboats and cooking. He also liked working on his 1983 GT convertible Mustang. Jim was very active in family genealogy and also a history and Civil War buff.
      Survivors include his daughters, Angela (Greg Doyle) of Georgia, Andrea Hagan of Virginia, Alicia (Mike Pratt) of N. Carolina and Amanda Hagan of Virginia; son, James D. Hagan of Virginia; stepson, Chris Ewald of California; two brothers and three sisters, John Hagan, Theresa (Larry Widoren), Robin (Mark Domine) Hagan, Richard (Keli) Hagan - all of Traverse City, and Diane Hagan of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; and many special aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Patricia Mae Hagan.
      Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 12, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City with Rev. David Minger officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

      August 'Gus' Kranites
      Died June 8, 2000
      NAPLES, Fla. - August "Gus" Kranites, 75, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Hartland, Mich., passed away Thursday.
      Gus was the founder of Pak-Rite Industries in Ecorse, Mich. and Dunham Hills Golf and Country Club in Hartland. He was a past member of Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden and Eagle Creek Country Club in Naples, Fla. He served his country in World War II in the infantry and fought at the Battle of the Bulge.
      A great friend of golf, his love for his wife, Shirley, and his five children only superseded his love of the game. His career highlights included being past president of Michigan Publinx Golf Association, a Golf Day Honoree, induction into the MPGA Hall of Fame and nine holes-in-one. He truly loved the game.
      Gus is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; children, Kathryn Kranites, Dawn and Ron Long, Stephanie Carey, Arthur and Lesley Kranites and Jenifer Kranites. He was the grandfather of Jeff and Patrick Long, Katie and Christopher Carey, Lauren, Kristina and Alissa Kranites; brother of Peter Kranites, Lee Hnatiuk and Christine Nichols; and many nieces and nephews.
      Private family services were held in Naples, Fla.

      Wanda Louise Kurtz
      Died June 6, 2000
      THOMPSONVILLE - Wanda Louise Kurtz, 72, of Thompsonville, formerly of Jackson, passed away suddenly Tuesday.
      Wanda was a retired office manager from Adco Products.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard M., in 1981; and two brothers, Charles and Jimmy French.
      She is survived by three children, James R. (Doreen) Kurtz of Napoleon, Richard J. Kurtz of Thompsonville and Karen (Willie) Theisen of California; six grandchildren; and her brother, David French of Jackson.
      At her request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Nichols-Arthur Funeral Home, 820 Fifth Street, Michigan Center, Mich., with Rev. David L. Augenstein officiating.
      The family suggests contributions in her memory be made to a charity of one's choice.

      Eugene W. Lefler
      Died June 3, 2000
      BURTON - Eugene W. Lefler, 76, of Burton, died Saturday, June 3, at Genesys Regional Medical Center, Health Park.
      Mr. Lefler was born Oct. 4, 1923, in Grand Rapids, the son of Walter and Matilda (Layer) Lefler. He was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Frank on May 31, 1958.
      Mr. Lefler served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired in 1988 from Ternstedt-Fisher Body after 33 years of service and was a member of UAW Local No. 326. He was also a member of the Wolverine Radio Club and Smoke Rise of Davison. Mr. Lefler was a past member of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and enjoyed doing crafts.
      Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Shirley Mae; children, Jeff (Vickie) Lefler of Beulah, John (Kim) Lefler of Traverse City, Pam (Harold) Pattan of Linden, Darlene (Cecil) Myers of Burton, Sherri (Tim) Gross of Flint and Eugene (Susie) Lefler II of Negaunee; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; stepmother, Gladys Lefler of Texas; two half sisters, Wanda Kay (Mike) Stevens of Texas and Walta Evans of Arizona; and special friends from Smoke Rise Resort.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Matilda Lefler; and a half brother, Stanley.
      Memorial services were held on June 6 at Brown Funeral Home in Davison.

      Died June 7, 2000
      GRAWN - Phyllis A. Marsh, 67, of Grawn, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born June 27, 1932, in Grawn, she was the daughter of Delbert and Elma (Nickerson) Saxton. On Nov. 23, 1951, in the Interlochen area, she married Fred W. Marsh, Jr.
      A lifelong resident of the area, Phyllis was a 1951 graduate of Traverse City High School. Over the years she worked as a secretary at several stores downtown. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Traverse City, where she was an Elder. A mother and homemaker, she enjoyed crocheting and especially enjoyed her children, grandchildren and friends. Phyllis also volunteered for many activities with her church and the Red Cross.
      Survivors include her husband; four children, Janice M. Marsh and companion Randy Huffman of Traverse City, Sharon K. (Gary) Wilkins of Traverse City, Fred W. (Sandra) Marsh III of Traverse City and Ruth A. (David) White of Grand Rapids; eight grandchildren, Michael and Ann Wilkins, Fred IIII, David and Alicia Marsh and Emilee, Matthew and Annika White; her mother, Elma (Leroy) Wheelock of Traverse City; a brother, Marvin D. (Kay) Saxton of Grawn; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her father in 1968; and stepfather, Marvin H. Leggett in 1994.
      Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Elder Mike Mead officiating. Burial will be in Grawn Maple Grove Cemetery.

      Died June 8, 2000
      ELK RAPIDS - Leona M. Spencer, 94, of Elk Rapids, died Thursday at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      Born April 9, 1906, in Garden, she was the daughter of Alexander and Margaret (Gray) Mellon. On June 17, 1939, in Detroit, she married Leo Spencer, who preceded her in death on May 6, 1968.
      Leona was employed by a Patent Attorney at U.S. Rubber in Detroit until she was married. Later in 1948 she moved to Elk Rapids and worked for the State Bank of Elk Rapids as assistant cashier and was a member of the Board of Directors. In the mid 1950's she operated the office for Elk Rapids Insurance Agency while also serving on the bank Board of Directors. In 1967 when the bank merged with Traverse City State Bank, she also remained on the board. She retired in 1971, although remained on the Board of Directors until 1976.
      She was a member of Sacred Heart Cathoic Church, active in the Altar Society, and was an organist and sang in the choir. Leona was a member of BPW. She was a member of the National Association of Bank Women and was active in the Antrim County Republican Party, and was a state delegate in 1971. She enjoyed music, knitting and traveling.
      Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Anne (Daniel) LeBlond of Plymouth, Roberta Lee Cornelissen of Elk Rapids and Rosemary (John) Grossa of Fruitport; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; six sisters; two brothers; and a son-in-law, Herman Cornelissen.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, where an evening prayer from the Order of Christian Funerals will be at 7 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids with Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski serving as celebrant. Burial will be at the new Garden Cemetery in Garden, Mich.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Sacred Heart Church Building Fund.

      Died June 10, 2000
      BUCKLEY - Robert Keller Porter, 76, of Buckley, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the home of his son.
      He was born May 2, 1924, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, the son of Clyde Alva and Margaret Marie (Smith) Porter and had been a 15-year resident of Augusta, Ga., prior to moving to the Buckley area about a month ago.
      A 52-year union brickmason with Local No. 7 in Akron, Ohio, Bob enjoyed fishing, being in the out-of-doors and helping others. He was very proud of his ability as a bricklayer and stonemason and was well respected in his field and much in demand.
      He was also proud of his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II when he was commissioned an Airship (blimp) Rigger First Class. He saw duty in both the African and European Theatres and was honorably discharged in 1945.
      Bob is survived by his wife Rose, whom he married June 18, 1976, in Jellicoe, Tenn.; children, Marie (Paul) Markel of Augusta, Ga., Sandra Dario and her friend, John Tucker, of Akron, Ohio, Nancy (James) France of Akron, Ohio, Robin (Paul) Hadnett of Barberton, Ohio, Randall (Linda) Porter of Buckley, Roger (Rebecca) Porter of Akron, Ohio, David (Linda) Hall of Centreville, Ohio, and Jerry (Lena) Hall of Akron, Ohio; 25 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, 10 brothers and sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Richard.
      At Bob's request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Akron, Ohio.
      Memorials may be directed to the World War II Veterans Memorial Fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

      DUARTE, Calif. - Paul Barth Jr., 77, of Duarte, died suddenly, due to natural causes, Sunday at United Community Hospital in Pine Township, Mercer County, Penn.
      Born March 15, 1923, in Maple City, Mich., he was the son of Paul Gustave and Millie (Hamilton) Barth.
      On Feb. 14, 1948, he married Theresa Joseph.
      Paul was a retired wholesale bread salesman who had worked for the Interstate Bakery in Los Angeles. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge.
      Survivors include his wife, Theresa of Duarte; three sons, the Rev. Dr. P. Joseph Barth of Slippery Rock, Penn.; Michael A. Barth of Tujunga, and Daniel L. Barth of Duarte; a daughter, Kathleen E. Parker of Glendale; two brothers, Gustave Barth of Ludington, Mich., and Louis Barth of Baldwin Park; and four grandchildren.
      Paul was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lucille; and two brothers, Wayne and Norman.
      Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Elberta United Methodist Church in Elberta, Mich. The Revs. Larry Ross, Dr. P. Joseph Barth and Kay Koomes will officiate. Friends are invited to join the fellowship time at the church immediately following the service.

      Died June 11, 2000
      BERWYN, Penn. - Charlotte L. Miltz, 78, of Berwyn, died Sunday.
      She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Ohio State University. She had resided in the Main Line area, a suburban area outside of Philadelphia, for over 30 years. A longtime active member of St. Davids Episcopal Church in Radnor, she was also a real estate agent with the Roach organization for over 30 years.
      The beloved wife of 57 years to R. William Miltz; beloved mother of William J. Miltz of Maple City, Mich., Charlene Miltz Deuber of Devon, and John C. Miltz of Lancaster, Penn.; she is also survived by seven grandchildren and four sisters.
      A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 17, in the Chapel of St. Davids Episcopal Church, 763 Valley Forge Road, Wayne, PA 19087.
      Interment is private.

      Gilbert 'Gib' Henigan
      Died June 8, 2000
      BUCKLEY - Gilbert 'Gib' Henigan, 70, died Thursday.
      Born Nov. 28, 1929, in Buckley, he was the son of Homer and Laura (Hammer) Henigan.
      On Feb. 6, 1961, in Anchorage, Alaska, he married Barbara Liddle.
      Gib was a lifelong resident of Buckley. A mess sergeant and radar repair specialist for the U.S. Army, he served in the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post No 2780.
      After retirement, Gib enjoyed building and gardening. He looked after his elderly neighbors in Buckley and donated many hours to maintaining the Buckley Wayside Chapel. Gib also liked hunting and fishing.
      Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Buckley; two children, Cherie (Jim) Suhy of Kingsley and Michael (Tamyra) Henigan of Hillman; three sisters, Mable Knight, Ann (Sam) Bossingham, and Evelyn (David) Youker; and three grandchildren, David and Jonathan Suhy and Kyle Henigan.
      Gib was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Bob, Al and Chuck Henigan.
      The family will great friends one hour before the memorial service which will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Wayside Chapel in Buckley. The Rev. James Webb will officiate. Interment will be in Cornell Cemetery in Buckley.

      Dorothy A. Kraftchick
      Died June 12, 2000
      FRANKFORT - Dorothy A. Kraftchick, 90, of Frankfort, died Monday at The Maples in Frankfort.
      Dorothy was born on April 18, 1910, in South Frankfort, the daughter of Mangus and Macea (Slyfield) Anderson. She was the great-granddaughter of Alonzo J. Slyfield, MD, one of the early pioneers of Benzie County.
      At a young age she moved to Dundee where she grew up. In 1928 she graduated from Dundee High School and then attended Eastern Michigan University where she received her BA then later received her master's degree. Dorothy taught in various country schools in the Ida and Dundee areas in elementary education. After receiving her master's degree she taught special education at the high school level. In 1972 she retired after 43 years in education.
      On Dec. 10, 1932, in Angola, Ind., she married Milton Kraftchick. Together they lived and enjoyed their farm in Monroe County until retiring in 1972.
      Dorothy held long time memberships in various flower clubs in Monroe. She was a member of Eastern Michigan Alumni Association, First Congregational Church in Frankfort, the Women's Fellowship of the church, Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Michigan Education Association, Benzie County Retired Teachers, Benzie County Historical Society and the Frankfort Study Club.
      After their retirement, Dorothy and her husband were mail carriers on the Star Route in Frankfort, which her daughter now runs. She enjoyed bridge, gardening and work. Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother, and enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandson.
      Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Kay VanOrder of Frankfort, Helen (Tom) Wenn of Cadillac, Myra (Al) Elias of Frankfort and Jane Tarnecki of Arcadia; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
      Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband in 1978, a granddaughter Leah Rath in 1995, a brother Robert Anderson and a sister Helen Herman.
      Friends may meet with the family from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Dinah Haag officiating. Burial will follow at Gilmore Township Cemetery.
      Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider either The Maples or the Steeple Fund of the First Congregational Church in Frankfort.

      FERNDALE - Leo R. Batzer, 62, of Ferndale, died Tuesday at his home.
      Born April 14, 1938, in Cadillac, he was the son of William and Lenoir (Mellenger) Batzer. Leo worked for the City of Royal Oak and retired in 1999.
      He is survived by his son, Glen Batzer of Detroit; three grandchildren; three brothers, William (Gloria) Batzer, Jr. of Cedar, Norman (Marilyn) Batzer of Belding and Daniel Batzer of Cadillac; a sister, Esther (Lawrence) Ramsay of Interlochen; and many special nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his son, Julius Batzer; parents; and brothers, Clinton Douglas Batzer and Richard Batzer.
      Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens with Rev. Larry Ross officiating.

      Fred T. Bauer
      Died June 13, 2000
      KINGSLEY - Fred T. Bauer, 92, of Kingsley, died Tuesday.
      Born Nov. 17, 1907, in Kingsley, he was the son of Joseph and Theresa (Peaschl) Bauer, Sr. On Nov. 22, 1932, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hannah, he married the former Anna Schmuckal.
      Fred was a lifelong resident of Kingsley. A self employed farmer, Fred raised potatoes. He also served as Mayfield Township clerk for 36 years, holding that position longer than any other clerk in the state of Michigan. Fred was a member of St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church and served on the board for many years. He was instrumental in the construction of the parish hall in St. Mary's of Hannah School.
      He is survived by three children, Carl (Flossie) Bauer of Kingsley, Valita (John) Moon of Traverse City and Dan (Dawn) Bauer of Kingsley; seven grandchildren, Lee Ann (Tom) Weber, Pam (Trevor) Yetter, Debra (Wayne) Banton, Lorie Moon, Timothy Moon and David and Diana Bauer; and 11 great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; and five brothers and four sisters.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's of Hannah with Rev. Albin Gietzen officiating. Visitation will continue on Friday from 10 a.m. at the church until the time of service. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church or mass intentions.
      Walter Frank Novak
      Died June 13, 2000
      CEDAR - Walter Frank Novak, 94, of Cedar, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Jan. 24, 1906, in Cedar, he was the son of Joseph and Magdalene (Popa) Novak. On April 22, 1929, at Holy Rosary in Isadore, he married the former Pelagia H. "Polly" Mikowski, who preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 1990.
      A lifelong resident of Cedar, Walter was a member of Holy Rosary Church. He was employed at Lake Michigan Hardwood Mill for 14 years. Walter will always be remembered as a pro euchre player. He also loved to garden and make potato crates.
      He is survived by four sons, Joseph (Jean) Novak of Williamston, Lawrence (Eunice) Novak, Edward Novak and Adolph (Arlene) Novak - all of Cedar; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
      He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph; half brothers, Andrew and Bennie; two sisters, Mary Kuemin and Anna Kohler; a half sister, Anastasia Flohe; and his stepfather, Anthony Peplinski
      Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Friends may also call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Holy Rosary Church, where a rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church with Rev. Arthur Mulka serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

      ROSA LENA POWELL, 93, of Rapid City, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at her home. A homemaker, she was born March 3, 1907, in Merom, Ind.

      DONALD H. 'DON' SOLEM, 84, of Traverse City, died Thursday morning, June 15, 2000, at Bortz Health Care. Born Dec. 10, 1915, he was a retired cherry farmer and former owner of Solem Nursing Home, now known as Bortz Health Care.

      Died June 13, 2000
      TORCH LAKE - Verna E. Elliott, 76, of Torch Lake, died Tuesday.
      Born April 9, 1924, in Moltke, she was the daughter of Albert and Dora (Wyant) Tulgestke. On Dec. 24, 1943, in Shawnee, Okla., she married Harold S. Elliott.
      Verna was a member of the VFW Auxiliary No. 8684 of Kalkaska. She moved to the Torch Lake area in 1966 from Flint. During the late 1940's she operated restaurants in the Cheboygan area. From 1958 to 1966 she owned and operated the Torch Riveria. In 1970 she purchased the Hotel Kalkaska, operating it until 1981. During the 1970's she also co-owned Century 21 H&H Realty in Kalkaska. Verna was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Elk Rapids.
      She is survived by her daughters, Doreen (Joe) Bruso of Torch Lake and Kaye (Joe) Leazier of Hulbert; sons, Dean (Sandra) Elliott of Lake Orion and Kurt Elliott of Mt. Morris; grandchildren, Dana (David) Rozelle of Ludington, Cara (Anthony) Saber of Lake Orion, Sherry Elliott of Greenville, SC, Anissa Bruso of Traverse City, Jana and Jane Bruso - both of Torch Lake, step-grandchildren, Tammy-Jo (Bob) Frazee of Springfield, Mo. and Page (Vicki) Leazier of Newberry; great-grandchildren, Ashley Saber and Justin Saber (preceded in death), and Hailey Rozelle; step-great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Tyler Frazee and Gwen and Michael Blanchard. She is also survived by a special friend, confidant and companion, Lyle Jenkins.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold S. Elliott; sister, Helen Tulgestke; and a brother, Kenneth Tulgestke.
      Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Don VanDyke officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.

      Nandor Joseph 'Joe' Hernadi Sr.
      Died June 14, 2000
      COPEMISH - Nandor Joseph "Joe" Hernadi Sr., 61, of Copemish, died unexpectedly Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at his residence. He was born Sept. 30, 1938, in Eger, Hungary, the son of Nandor and Margret (Dani) Hernadi.
      Joe worked in residential and commercial plumbing and heating, and had worked as a farmer, having many different farming ventures, as well as being a builder, building and remodeling several homes in Benzie, Grand Traverse and Manistee counties. He loved being outdoors, and he enjoyed art. He received the most satisfaction by getting a good deal on something, then turning around and selling it for a good price.
      Hoe is survived by his former spouse, Alayne Hernadi of Farmington Hills; his three sons, Nandor (Kelly) Hernadi Jr. of St. Clair Shores, Dan (Margaret) Hernadi of Royal Oak, and Albert (Shannon) Hernadi of Madison Heights; two granddaughters, Heather and Andrea; two grandsons, Jacob and Alex; his brother, Laszlo Hernadi of Hungary; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 17, 2000, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today and on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.

      FRANKENMUTH - Molly Ione Johnson Hrinevich, of Frankenmuth, died Tuesday, June 6, at Frankenmuth Health Center after a short illness.
      Born June 12, 1913, in Suttons Bay, she was the daughter of John L. and Lena (Gellness) Johnson.
      Molly moved to Flint where she worked at AC Sparkplugs for 18 years. She married Alex Hrinevich on Sept. 3, 1950, and moved to Grand Blanc. They retired to New Port Richey, Fla. and loved to travel. Recently they moved to Frankenmuth.
      Molly is survived by her husband, Al; a sister, Gertrude Mae Galbraith (Andy) Bryce; nieces, Avis Schaub (John C.) Hanell and Mary Jane Galbraith (Lee) Nelson; a nephew, Gary (Jean) Galbraith; a stepdaughter, Sue Hrinevich Humphries; many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren; and great nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Anna L. Johnson (Ambrose) Schaub and Leona Jane Johnson.
      There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at the Regal Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 2417 S. Saginaw Street, Flint.

      Joan H. Hunger
      Died June 14, 2000
      BELLAIRE - Joan H. Hunger, of Bellaire, died Wednesday at Woodward Hills in Bloomfield Hills.
      Born in Winborne, Pa., she was the daughter of Carl and Mary (Zelonka) Lisek. She had resided on Lake Bellaire for over 40 years, moving from Birmingham. On Sept. 12, 1935, in Ferndale, she married Harvey W. Hunger, who preceded her in death in 1990.
      Surviving are two sisters, Mary Hepfner of Plantation, Fla. and Ethel Fons of Royal Oak; a brother, Daniel (Claire) Lisek of Carson City, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews.
      The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Bellaire.

      DEARBORN - Harold Louis Kalchik, 60, of Dearborn, died Monday.
      Born Feb. 13, 1940, in Northport, he was the son of Louis and Helen (Nemeskle) Kalchik.
      Harold served with the 101 Airborne and was a member of Local No. 98 Plumbers Union. He loved the game of golf but wasn't very good at it.
      He is survived by four children, Christopher (Jennifer) Kalchik, Kim (Darryl) Littlefield, Tom Kalchik and Scott Kalchik; one granddaughter, Kaysha; dear brother of Walter, Victor, Delores, Francis, Jean, Albion, Cindy and Georgia; and many, many nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Ward L. Knight, 88, of Traverse City, died Thursday.
      Born June 11, 1912, in Paradise Township, he was the son of Eugene T. and Lulu (Pierce) Knight. On June 10, 1939, in Kingsley, he married the former Margaret E. Sattem.
      Ward lived in the Kingsley area most of his life. A farmer, he was also a manager of The Kingsley Co-Op. In his retirement years he worked at a convenience store. Ward was a veteran of World War II; he served in the Army Infantry and participated in Patton's march across Germany. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 383 and the VFW Post No. 2780. Ward enjoyed a lifelong love of poetry and upon request he could share a poem to fit any occasion. Over his lifetime he had committed dozens of poems to memory, even into old age. He also enjoyed playing cards at the Eagles with his friends.
      He is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Wayne) Knight of Swartz Creek and Jean (DuWayne) Weaver of Traverse City; five sisters, Marion Maxon of Kingsley, Ruth Moyer of Buckley, Bernice (Chet) Seel of Traverse City, Betty (Phil) Bowden of Kingsley and Jeanne (Bob) Kyselka of Traverse City; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lulu; wife, Margaret, in 1990; four brothers, Lucius, Ellis, Cyril and Colon; and two sisters, Hazel and Winnifred.
      Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor William Smith, grandson of Ward, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

      Frederick Joseph Randall
      Died June 14, 2000
      HONOR - Frederick Joseph Randall, 80, of Honor, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born March 6, 1920, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of John V. and Mary A. (Manikoski) Randall. On April 27, 1946, in Grand Rapids, he married the former Geraldine Diskey.
      Formerly a mechanical engineer for the U.S. Space Program, playing the piano was his second love. He was the pianist at The Frankfort Inn. He was a member of the AMF Local No. 56 Musicians Union for 60 years, a 32nd degree Mason and member of Lodge No. 131 in Newago, a member of The Saladin Shrine in Grand Rapids and also a member of The Mississippi Jazz Coast Society.
      He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; two sons, John F. (Jackie) Randall of Honor and James G. (Charlene) Randall of Traverse City; a daughter, Judith Lynn (Glenn) Zubris of Key West, Fla.; six grandchildren; and a sister, Joanne Lackus of Grand Rapids.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at St. Ann Catholic Church with Father Arthur Niewiadomski officiating. Friends may call at the church at the time of service.

      MAPLE CITY - Helen Jaynes Wright, 86, of Maple City, died Tuesday at Maple Valley Nursing Home.
      Born Oct. 27, 1913, she was the daughter of Clarence Clinton and Armina (Parks) Jaynes.
      She is survived by a son, David (Sally) Beegle of Kalamazoo; daughter, Nancy (Marty) Keasal of Plymouth; a sister, Frances Novak; eight grandchildren, Tim (Sue) Nichols of Glen Arbor, Scott Hanna and Jay Hanna of Plymouth, Steven Hannah of Las Vegas, David (Angela) Beegle of Constantine, Laura Beegle of Kalamazoo, Julia Beegle of Berkley and Andy Beegle of Shoreline, Wash.; and two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Noah Beegle.
      A private family service will be held.

      William Victor Cayo
      Died June 15, 2000
      INTERLOCHEN - William Victor Cayo, 78, of Interlochen, died peacefully Thursday evening at his home.
      Born April 6, 1922, in Milwaukee, Wis., he was the son of Clarence and Alice (Cameron) Cayo.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by a sister, Dr. Patricia Sexton of Manhattan, NY, and many friends.
      William enlisted in the Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor. He served honorably in both the Navy and the U.S. Maritime Service from 1942 to 1949. He served in the Antarctic, covered troop landings in the Pacific and was the first shore party to land at Nagoya, Japan, on D-Day. William was a light-heavyweight champion of the Maritime Academy. As a lieutenant, he retired from federal service after 13 years of service. He received five service ribbons from the U.S. Commerce Department, seven from the Navy and two from foreign countries.
      He moved to Interlochen in 1972 and became the owner of the Ranch House. He was very active in community affairs. He was a member of Green Lake Township Board and a chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee. William was responsible for converting a "brown field" site into the beautiful Memorial Park we have today. He also spearheaded the Veteran's Memorial at the site.
      William was also a member of the VFW Post 7493 in Interlochen, where he was a commander for two years, Traverse City American Legion Post 35, American Military League, Green Lake Township trustee, vice president of the Interlochen Chamber of Commerce; and many maritime service organizations.
      William was the recipient of the Governor's "Citizen of the Year Award." He was an avid supporter of the Local Women's Club, Library, Golden Fellowship and youth and adult baseball leagues. He was also an active member of the Interlochen Eagles, and organized many local fund raisers and charitable efforts. He was a community leader in all respects, generous, dependable and considerate. He devoted his entire life to community service. He will be missed by all.
      Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 18 and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 19, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Interlochen Mt. Hope Cemetery with Chaplain Richard Ask officiating. Full military honors will be under the auspices of the Interlochen VFW Post 7493 and Traverse City VFW Post 2780.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Virginia C. Craven, 78, of Traverse City, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Aug. 22, 1921, in Greilickville, she was the daughter of Gilbert Peter and Pearl Jane (Davis) Warnes. On April 4, 1942, at the Court House in Leland, she married Warden Miles Craven.
      She is survived by two daughters, Sonja C. Craven of Traverse City and Deanna L. (Timothy) Noonan of Interlochen; a sister, Gertrude Cornell of Traverse City; a brother, Gilbert (Elsie) Warnes of Glen Arbor; three grandchildren, Derek Pahl, Dustin Pahl and Dolly Tokie; and four step-grandchildren, Dawn Lanham and Patrick, Kelly and Shannon Noonan; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Warden, in 1998; and an infant daughter, Vallerie.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with services led by her daughter Sonja. Friends may call the funeral home at the time of service. Burial will be in Empire Maple Grove.
      The family suggests that since Virginia loved flowers, flowers would be appropriate.

      Robert G. 'Bob' Drake
      Died June 14, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Robert G. "Bob" Drake, 78, of Traverse City, died Wednesday evening at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born June 26, 1921, in Garfield Township, he was the son of George and Evelyn (Emerson) Drake. Bob married Bernice Berg on June 19, 1942.
      Bob graduated from Traverse City High School in 1939. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in Europe, England and Okinawa. Bob retired from Michigan Bell Telephone Company (Ameritech) in 1978 after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and Asbury United Methodist Church, where he served on the board and was involved in the construction of the new church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and golf and spending many hours working in his workshop. Bob and Bernice enjoyed 18 winters in Gulf Shores, Ala.
      He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Bernice; three children, David Drake (Karen Young) of Cedar, Debra (Sam) Gray of Grand Rapids and Johanna (Jon) Gallegos of Grand Rapids; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; his sister, Janet (Warren) Wyckoff of Traverse City; his brother, Bill (Mary) Drake of Ithaca, NY; along with several nieces and nephews.
      Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, at Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. William Haggard officiating. The family will meet with relatives and friends for one hour at the church prior to the service.

      WASHINGTON, Ind. - Kathryn A. "Kate" Green, 80, of Washington, Ind. and formerly of John Street, Wash., died Wednesday at Heritage House of Jasper.
      Born Oct. 24, 1919, in Daviess County, Ind., she was the daughter of Ray P. and Lottie E. (Robinson) Jackson. On June 2, 1945, she married Harold Carl Green, who preceded her in death on July 11, 1989.
      Kate was a 1937 graduate of Washington High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the VFW Auxiliary.
      She is survived by two sons, David Green of Traverse City, Mich. and Harold Green of Jasper, Ind.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Ralph (Wilma) Chandler.
      Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry D. Green; and a sister, Lavern Naylor.
      Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Gill Funeral Home in Washington, Ind. with Rev. David Harker officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. today at the funeral home until the time of service. Interment will be in Sugarland Memory Gardens.

      Born in Wichita, Kan., Mary lived in Suttons Bay for over 54 years. A loving wife, mother and gentle grandmother, she attended Wayne State University graduating with a degree in home economics. Always active in her community, Mary was a 4-H leader for over 20 years in Leelanau County, election official, past president of the Suttons Bay Child Study Club, involved with the Suttons Bay Ladies Coffee Club, Women's Club, and Suttons Bay Congregational Church.
      Mary always had a positive outgoing attitude. Her life was also enriched by her enjoyment of walks on Stoney Pointe, swimming, knitting, sewing, cooking and grandchildren.
      She was blessed with a loving husband, Willard "Red" Leo; four very devoted daughters, Eleanor Wylie who died in 1984, Laura Franke of Traverse City, Nanci Lyon of Frankenmuth and Joan Schaub of Traverse City; four wonderful sons-in-law, Robert Wylie, Robert Franke, Steve Lyon and Lynn Schaub; plus her eight grandchildren, David and Eric Wylie, Brian and Holly Franke, Colleen and Mark Lyon, and Amber and Robin Schaub.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother; and a daughter.
      Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. Services for Mary will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 19, at the funeral home with Rev. Jim Beadle, pastor from the Suttons Bay Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be beside her husband at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.

      Walter Frank Novak
      Died June 13, 2000
      CEDAR - Walter Frank Novak, 94, of Cedar, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Jan. 24, 1906, in Cedar, he was the son of Joseph and Magdalene (Popa) Novak. On April 22, 1929, at Holy Rosary in Isadore, he married the former Pelagia H. "Polly" Mikowski, who preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 1990.
      A lifelong resident of Cedar, Walter was a member of Holy Rosary Church. He was a farmer and construction worker and employed at Lake Michigan Hardwood Mill for 14 years. Walter will always be remembered as a pro euchre player. He also loved to garden and make potato crates.
      He is survived by four sons, Joseph (Jean) Novak of Williamston, Lawrence (Eunice) Novak, Edward Novak and Adolph (Arlene) Novak - all of Cedar; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
      He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph; half brothers, Andrew and Bennie; two sisters, Mary Kuemin and Anna Kohler; a half sister, Anastasia Flohe; and his stepfather, Anthony Peplinski
      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today at the Holy Rosary Church with Rev. Arthur Mulka serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to Cedar Rescue or the Holy Rosary Church.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Margaret H. Semmer, 94, of Traverse City, died Friday, June 9, at Bortz Health Care.
      Mrs. Semmer was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
      She is survived by a daughter, Peggy (Dick) Davis; four grandchildren, Walt and Ann Ogburn of Traverse City, Thomas and Deb Ogburn of Traverse City, Betsy and Jim Zontini of Clinton Township and Brian and Chris Davis of Traverse City; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
      Funeral services and burial was held in St. Clair Shores.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Donald H. "Don" Solem, 84, of Traverse City, died Thursday morning at Bortz Health Care.
      Born Dec. 10, 1915, in Suttons Bay, he was the son of Louis and Caroline (Gillness) Solem. In June of 1959, in Traverse City, he married the former Lydia Lamie.
      A long time member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, he was the former owner and operator of Solem Nursing Home, now known as Bortz Health Care. He was also a former cherry farmer in Leelanau County.
      He is survived by four sisters, Mina (Russell) Winter of Kalkaska, Leona (Bud) McGillivary of Eastpointe, Ella (Jack) Burden of Dallas, Texas and Irene Merrell of Albuquerque, NM; sister-in-law, Emma Solem of Traverse City; several nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Elery Kurtzal, Yvonne Nash, Sandra Deerman, Beverly Oliver and Maxine Jansinski and their extended families.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia, on April 8, 1987; sisters, Ruth, Helen and Juliana; and brothers, LeRoy, Jordan, Adolph and Albion.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. David Gabel from Bethlehem Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

      Gordon Wallace Bahle
      Died June 16, 2000
      SUTTONS BAY - Gordon Wallace Bahle, of Suttons Bay, died Friday.
      Born June 12, 1912, in Ludington, he was the son of Captain Esten and Laura (Gronseth) Bahle.
      Gordon lived in Ludington until the death of his mother in 1918 when the family moved to Suttons Bay. He attended Suttons Bay schools and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. During his high school years, he was often the church organist. After completing high school he moved to Detroit to pursue a career in music. In 1935 he joined the Henry Ford Orchestra and remained with them until he was drafted in 1942. During this time he also made occasional appearances on Detroit radio shows. During World War II he served as a staff sergeant in the Rhineland Campaign. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After the service he co-owned and operated, with his brother Lester, the Civic Park Cleaners & Men's Shop in Flint. He retired in 1982 and returned to Suttons Bay in 1988.
      He is survived by three brothers, Lester, Orville and Kenneth (Helen); two sisters, Realpha (Clausen) and Thelma (Ike Hagen); also many nieces and nephews.
      His mother and father preceded him in death.
      A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church at a later date. No visitation is planned.
      In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the church building fund in Gordon's name.

      Died June 16, 2000
      KEWADIN - Lyle F. Luchenbill, 69, of Kewadin, passed away Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      A Kewadin resident since 1965, he moved here from Linden. He was born April 22, 1931, in Venice Center, the son of Bert and Nina (Randall) Luchenbill. In 1959, in Angola, Ind., he married the former Lee Holcomb, who survives.
      Lyle worked as the building and electrical inspector for Antrim County for 20 years. He also produced and sold maple syrup with his wife, and enjoyed woodworking, motorcycling and camping. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War.
      Lyle is survived by his wife, Lee, of Kewadin; two daughters, Toni (Michael) Culbreath of Alden and Kim Luchenbill of Kewadin; two sons, Chris (Charlotte) Luchenbill of Kewadin and Mick (Sheri) Luchenbill of Central Lake; and ten grandchildren, Lisa, Nic, Dawn, Katrina, Travis, Tim, Alex, Josh, Mac and Jake.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara Merrell; and two brothers, Melvin and Robert.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with visitation continuing from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Rev. William Amundsen will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Margaret E. Gildarski, 84, of Traverse City, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born April 9, 1916, in Leelanau County, she was the daughter of Joseph and Roby (Phillips) Bickler.
      On May 20, 1940, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City, she married Leslie M. "Les" Gildarski.
      Margaret was a retired account executive with the Department of Social Services for the State of Michigan. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Variety Club and a child study club. Margaret was also a life member of the Traverse City Elks Daisy Chain.
      Survivors include a daughter, Lynn (Orville) Hansen of Essexville, Mich.; a son, Leslie "Les" Gildarski of Traverse City; and two grandchildren, Rachelle (James) Parady of Midland and Bryan Hansen of Orlando, Fla.
      Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Les, on March 21, 1993; a sister, Katherine Dehn; and two brothers, Robert and Joseph "Bud" Bickler.
      Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
      Visitation will also take place one hour prior to a funeral Mass which will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church; the Rev. Father James Hayden will serve as celebrant.

      EMPIRE - Richard G. Mingus, 68, of Empire, died Thursday.
      Born Sept. 11, 1931, in East Lansing, he was the son of Birg and Helen (Garver) Mingus.
      On June 25, 1955, in Traverse City, he married Marian Myers.
      Richard served in the U.S. Air Force from December 1951 to January 1970 and retired as a TSGT. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed refinishing furniture. Richard was a member of St. Philips. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
      Survivors include his wife, Marian of Empire; two sons, Steven (Pam) Mingus of Traverse City and David Mingus of Lansing; two daughters, Linda (Wayne) Taghon of Empire and Gayle (Charles) Reynolds of Oak Park, Mich.; eight grandchildren; a brother, Cleon Mingus of East Lansing; and three sisters, Barbara Cruz and Lila Little - both of Lansing and Evelyn Teed of Swartz Creek, Mich.
      Richard was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Birg Mingus Jr.; and a sister, Betty Kain.
      Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire.

      Eugene Victor Bailey
      Died June 18, 2000
      MANCELONA - Eugene Victor Bailey, 72, of Mancelona, passed away Sunday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City following a 13 year illness.
      Eugene was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as a Flight Service Specialist in Traverse City from 1960 until his retirement in 1986. A man of many interests, he enjoyed antique cars, wooden boats and snowmobiling and was an avid pilot. He was a member of the Traverse City Car Club, the Michigan Snowmobilers Association and the Kalkaska County and Antrim County snowmobile clubs. He was affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids. Eugene will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
      Born in Kalkaska County on June 14, 1928, he was the son of Cecil and Catherine Denches Bailey. On Aug. 15, 1950, in Elmira, he was united in marriage with Mary Alice Schaff who survives.
      Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, David (Mary Bridget) Bailey of Williamsburg; two daughters, Marsha (Melvin) Browning of Interlochen and Ruth Ann Bailey of Empire; a brother, Gordon (Betty) Bailey of Owosso; three sisters, Loretta (Jim) Burgett of Kansas City, Mo., Lydia (Duane) Hershberger of Williamsburg, and Laura (Dan) Huffman of Hesperia; seven grandchildren, Brandy (Tom) Gallagher of Grand Rapids, Heather Marie (Aaron) Cody of Kalamazoo, Brian Lee Zionskowski of Interlochen, Courtney (Randy) Elkins of Kalkaska, Jamie Zionskowski of Interlochen, Tyler (Renee) Nickels of Kalkaska, and Josh Bailey of Williamsburg; three great-granddaughters, Eden, Brittney, and Natosha Jade Elkins; and many nieces and nephews.
      His parents, Cecil Bailey and Catherine Bailey Boik, and a brother, Warren Bailey, preceded him in death.
      A service in appreciation of the life of Eugene Bailey will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids. The Rev. Dan Herlein will officiate. Interment will be in Coldsprings Township Cemetery, Kalkaska County.

      GREELEY, Colo. - Matthew John Jacobs, 26, died Saturday.
      Born June 19, 1973, he was the son of William Jacobs and Patricia Case.
      He was a graduate from St. Francis High School in Traverse City, Mich., and Emery Riddle University of Daytona Beach, Fla. Matthew graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Science. He enjoyed all types of hunting, fishing and golfing. Matthew enjoyed riding dirt bikes in the mountains. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners Pilots Association and the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Matthew was a captain at Air Wisconsin Airlines and resided in Greeley.
      Matthew is survived by his father, William Jacobs of Traverse City, Mich.; mother, Patricia Case of Berrian Springs, Mich.; brothers, Mark of Kalkaska, Mich., Ted of Traverse City, Mich., Tom of Torch Lake, Mich., and Mike of Kansas City; sisters, Nichole Case of Berrian Springs, Mich., Rita, Kathy, Sue, Mary, and Karen Case of Dearborn, Mich.; and his fianc‚e, Kelly Haag of Greeley. They were to have been married on July 1, 2000, after being high school sweethearts for over 10 years.

      Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Minnie and Conrad Lather; brother, Donald Lather; and sister, Leona Lather Borgerson.

      MILFORD - Guy D. Harris, 27, of Milford, formerly of Traverse City, died at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City of accidental injuries Sunday.
      Guy was born Feb. 23, 1973, in Northport, the son of James R. and Mary A. (Sumners) Harris and had lived in the Traverse City area prior to leaving for college.
      Guy was a 1991 graduate of St. Francis High School and then attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1995 with a BA degree. A member of Delta Chi Fraternity and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Milford, Guy was an infrastructure engineer with EDS Corporation. An avid hunter, fisherman and an expert golfer and mogul skier, Guy enjoyed being in the out-of-doors. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family.
      Guy is survived by his wife, the former Lisa A. Krueger, whom he married July 26, 1997, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Milford; his daughter, Cassie; parents, Jim and Mary Harris of Cedar; his sisters and brother, Teresa Ann Harris of Traverse City, James R. Harris, Jr. of New York, Nicole J. (Jason) Hulet of Traverse City; his nieces, Ashley and Emily; his mother and father-in-law, Donna and Ron Krueger of Traverse City; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

      LOWELL - Dorothy Lather, 90, of Lowell, formerly of Suttons Bay, passed away Thursday.
      She is survived by a nephew, Dr. Norman E. Borgerson Jr. of Lowell; grandnephews, Matt Borgerson of Grand Rapids and Conrad Belfour of Suttons Bay; and grandnieces, Cyndi Koetje of Whitneyville, Jana McGuire of Snohomish, Wash., and Dian Belfour of Denver, Colo.
      Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Minnie and Conrad Lather; brother, Donald Lather; and sister, Leona Lather Borgerson.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay; the Rev. James Beadle, pastor of the Suttons Bay Congregational Church, will officiate.
      Gerhard Herbert Phillip Sampson
      Died June 19, 2000
      COPEMISH - Gerhard Herbert Phillip Sampson, 40, of Copemish, died Monday at Spectrum Health Downtown Campus in Grand Rapids.
      Born Oct. 27, 1959, in Karlsrohe, Germany, he was the son of Richard and Irmgard (Rinkler) Sampson.
      Gerhard was a longtime employee of Bluebill Industries in Kaleva, where he was a boat builder. In his spare time Gerhard was an avid hunter.
      He is survived by his wife, Bunny Kay Sampson of Copemish; his children, Heidi Sampson of Kingsley, Raymond Sampson of Bear Lake, Wallace Sampson of Copemish and Charles Sampson of Copemish; his mother, Irmgard Rinkler of Algonac; five brothers and sisters, Debbie (Brian) Lubinski of Marine City, Irene (Jamie) Antonevich of Marine City, Gisela (Mike) Horn of Marine City, Richard (Lisa) Sampson of Kaleva and Herb Sampson of Algonac; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Gerhard was preceded in death by his father, Richard Sampson.
      Cremation has taken place and no services will be held at this time. The Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva is in charge of arrangements.

      TRAVERSE CITY - H. Keith Marrow, 64, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, recently retired to the Sharon area of Kalkaska County, died in Kalkaska County as the result of a motor vehicle accident.
      Born Nov. 26, 1935, in Adrian, he was the son of Kenneth and Geraldine (Hood) Marrow. In 1958, in Fife Lake, he married the former Virginia Ingersoll.
      Keith was a member of the Boardman Valley Collectors Guild and former commander of Civil Air Patrol of the Traverse City Squadron. He enjoyed traveling to gun shows, spending winters in Green Valley, Ariz. with special friends, photography, gardening, and his passion of flying. He dearly loved his eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
      Keith is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia; sons, Bryan (Cathleen) Marrow and Marc (Michelle) Marrow - both of Traverse City; daughter, Kelly (Ronald) Chapman of Mancelona; sister, Karen (Robert) Rush of Ottawa Lake; aunt, Bertha Marrow of Tipton; cousins, Jack and Pat Burnett of Houghton Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.

      James D. 'Red' Murchie
      Died June 21, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - James D. "Red" Murchie, 88, of Traverse City, died Wednesday.
      Born Nov. 16, 1911, in Iron River, he was the son of Hugh E. and Lydia H. (Clapper) Murchie. On Aug. 16, 1947, in Traverse City, he married the former Sophie B. Winowiecki. Red lived in Traverse City most of his life, moving here in 1920.
      Red was employed at Arms and Cole for 30 years. A well known musician, he played drums for 60 years and formed many of his own bands. He continued playing well into his later years. He started playing drums in high school and participated in the first Cherry Festival parade that the Traverse City High School Band played in. Red was a former scout master for Traverse City Boy Scout Chapter at Glen Loomis School, a member of the Traverse City Heating Board, longtime member of St. Francis Catholic Church, member of the Elks Lodge No. 323 and Eagles Lodge No. 383, American Association of Retired Persons, a lifetime member of Northwest Concertina Club, United Commercial Travelers Council No. 235, charter member of Trades Credit Union, serving on the board for many years, charter member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 543 and 21 years as the business manager, and a former member of Musicians Association Local No. 169 A.F. of L.
      Survivors include two sons, Michael J. (LeeAnne) Murchie and Larry A. (Kathi) Murchie - both of Traverse City; one brother, Jack (Jean) Murchie of Traverse City; two grandsons, Eric A. and Patrick J. Murchie; one granddaughter, Heather Marie Murchie - all of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sophie, of over 50 years; and one brother, Hugh Robert Murchie.

      TRAVERSE CITY - William D. Tyree, 69, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      He is survived by four children, Sharon (Tim) Earl of Kewadin, Carol (Bob) Taylor of Murrells Inlet, SC, Debbie Wright of Dearborn Heights and David (Ren‚e) Wright of Royal Oak; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Virginia Ann Wright, on Feb. 10, 2000.

      John Winsor Stocking
      Died June 21, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - John Winsor Stocking, 46, of Traverse City, went to be with his Lord at home on Wednesday. John courageously received the Gift of Life through a kidney transplant on June 8, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids.
      On May 19, 1973, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City, John and the former Rebecca L. Hanley were joined in marriage by Monsignor Gallagher.
      John was employed at Prevo's Family Market since 1969 and made many friends with customers and fellow employees. He coached Little League and Tee Ball for Blair Township for ten years. He was also actively involved with Sabin Elementary School, PTA and the Advisory Committee while his children attended school there. John was also an avid sports fan and he enjoyed making stained glass crafts.
      He is survived by his wife, Becky L. Stocking, of Traverse City; one daughter, Caroline Kelly Stocking and her fiancee Craig Woodworth - both of Traverse City; one son, Jamieson John Stocking and his friend Lindsi Summers - both of Traverse City; his father and stepmother, Donald M. and Betty Stocking of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a granddaughter, beautiful and precious Brooke Taylor Stocking; mother-in-law, Edna Caroline Hanley of Traverse City; his in-laws, Stacy (Mark) Makowski and Gloria (Bill) Batzer - both of Traverse City and James (Susan) Hanley and Mike (Tricia) Hanley - both of Florida; many nieces and nephews; and extended family members including Beth Harris-Hentschel, the Fourniers, the Porters and the Vastines.
      He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Lou Franklin-Stocking; a sister, Suzanne Stocking; and his father-in-law, Stan Hanley.

      Caleb L. Sutter
      Died June 20, 2000
      FRANKFORT - Caleb L. Sutter, 15, of Frankfort, died Tuesday evening in Frankfort.
      Caleb was born on July 19, 1984, the son of Layton and Colleen (Halpin) Sutter. Caleb had just completed his freshman year at the Frankfort-Elberta Area Schools. He was a member of the high school track team, where he participated in the mile relay, 800 meter relay, 400 meter relay and open 200. He participated in football while in Junior High.
      Caleb enjoyed biking, music, spending time with his friends, and being the jokester with his family and friends.
      Caleb is survived by his parents; two sisters, Ariel and Ireland, at home; his maternal grandparents, Arthur and Adelaide Halpin of Cadillac; his paternal grandmother, Louella McClain of Frankfort; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
      Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort with Pastor Roger Gilbert officiating. Interment will follow at Crystal Lake Township Cemetery North. Visitation will be held at the church at the time of services.

      Andrew Frederick Anderson
      Died June 22, 2000
      ESSEXVILLE - Andrew Frederick Anderson passed away Thursday at Bay Medical Center following a short illness.
      He was born in Bay City on June 15, 1930, to the late Oscar M. and Florence (Presley) Anderson.
      Andy was a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. and was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army Occupation Forces following World War II. He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church and was a former Session member. Additional memberships include the Saginaw Club, the Rotary Club of Bay City and the Bay Area Family Y.
      Andy was the president of the former Northern Supply Co., and was currently the CEO of Northern Industrial Supply. He was a founding member of the Auto Value Distribution Group. He served on the board of directors of the former First of America Bank. Andy also served on the board of the Saginaw Bay Orchestra and was a founding member of the Bay Concert Band.
      His interest in education included numerous projects at Delta College and Saginaw Valley State University as well as serving as a trustee of Northwood University where he received an Honorary Doctor of Law degree.
      He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Heuser, whom he married March 1, 1958. He also leaves four children, Bruce F. (Cheryl M.) Anderson of Saginaw, Eric A. (Shelley) Anderson of Okemos, Ashley C. Anderson of Bay City and Susan L. Anderson of Saginaw; four grandchildren, Andrew F. Anderson III, Abigail Anderson, Margaret Anderson and Cooper Anderson; as well as a sister, Annette (Gilbert) Deibel of Omena.
      Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the Penzien & Steele Funeral Home in Bay City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jeffrey D. Weenink officiating. He will lie in state at the church from 1 p.m. Sunday until the time of service. The committal service will be held at noon Monday at the Omena Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena.

      Died June 22, 2000
      ACME - William V. Hanna, 77, of Acme, died Thursday at his home.
      Born Oct. 30, 1922, in Acme, he was the son of Wilfred and Amy (Bussa) Hanna. On Aug. 25, 1946, in Traverse City, he married the former Geneva Henry.
      William was a life long resident of Acme. A farmer, William also was employed at the Traverse City State Hospital. He attended Elk Rapids Baptist Church and was an avid fisherman. William served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946, where he received the Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal.
      He is survived by his wife, Geneva; two sons, Gene (Patricia) Hanna and Dan (Kathleen) Hanna - both of Acme; three daughters, Sue (William) Ellis of Kalkaska, Sally (Al) Gross of Kalkaska and Cindy (Nick) Hall of Buckley; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Della Weatherholt and Ruth Lyons - both of Acme.
      He was preceded in death by one son, William J. Hanna; his parents; and one sister, Mildred Hanna.
      The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to Munson Hospice for the care given to their husband and father.

      Harvey V. Long
      Died June 19, 2000
      BENZONIA - Harvey V. Long, 95, of Benzonia, died Monday, June 19, at home surrounded by his family.
      Harvey was born Oct. 7, 1904, in Benzonia, the son of Adam and Matilda (Lung) Long. In 1935 he married Mina Caswell Long and together they enjoyed their farm in Benzonia where they raised their family.
      After his retirement from the Ann Arbor Car Ferries in 1968, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and pursuing his many hobbies, some of which were gardening, woodworking, making maple syrup, and all other outdoor activities.
      Harvey is survived by his daughters, Susan Boarman of Chugiak, Alaska, Barbara Ives of Jones, Mich. and Donna Tanner of Elkhart, Ind.; a son, Robert L. Long of Benzonia; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all.
      He was preceded in death by his wife Mina Long in 1976; three children, Fredrick Long and Marybelle Long and an infant baby girl; three brothers, William Long, Lloyd Long and Elton Long; four sisters, May Porter, Margaret Clark, Grace Priest and Ida Priest.
      A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, at Benzonia Township Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Finny officiating.

      Rosalie Racht
      Died June 21, 2000
      GREER, SC - Rosalie Lizon Racht, 78, of Greer, died Wednesday at the Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital. She was much loved by her family and friends.
      A native of Dearborn, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Adam and Mary (Golden) Lizon. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary Magdelene Catholic Church.
      Surviving are her husband, Ellis Racht; one son, Ken Racht of Bevard, NC; one brother, Joe Lizon of Dearborn; four sisters, Helen Huboy of Spartanburg, SC, Florence Marra of Schartz Creek, Mich., Mary Dorsch of Rodchester, Mich. and Monica Nehasil of Brighton, Mich.
      She was preceded in death by four brothers, Johnny, Walter, Chester and Stanley Lizon.

      Hilda M. Stubbs

      FRANKFORT - Hilda M. Stubbs, 97, of Frankfort, died Wednesday at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit.
      Hilda, a life long resident of Benzie County, was born on Sept. 5, 1902, in Blaine Township, the daughter of Walter and Kittie (Smith) Stubbs.
      Hilda is survived by a brother, Leon of Frankfort; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at Blaine Township Cemetery with Pastor Theodore Beiderwieden officiating.

      ELK RAPIDS - John Anderson, 75, of Elk Rapids, died Friday at his home.
      Born May 30, 1925, in Northport, he was the son of Thomas and Delia (James) Anderson. John was a lifelong resident of Elk Rapids.
      John's memberships included the Kewadin Indian Mission Church, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and Landing Craft Infantry Association (LCI). He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an avid card player, especially euchre and cribbage.
      He is survived by five sons, Thomas (Vicki) of Traverse City, James C. (Iva) of Traverse City; Jacob G. of Elk Rapids and Jeffery S. (Ginger) of Elk Rapids and CDR. Jonathan M. of Lowell; two daughters, Brenda (Anthony Sineway) Girard of Traverse City and Jennifer S. Anderson of Suttons Bay; one stepson, Randolph J. (Sharon) Miller of East Jordan; and a sister, Mary (John) Ruth of Central Lake; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by a brother, Chester Anderson; his parents; and a son, John Erick Anderson.
      Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the Kewadin Indian Mission Church, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Kewadin Indian Mission Church Tabernacle with Rev. Thomas Johns officiating. Burial will be in Kewadin Indian Mission Cemetery.

      Died June 23, 2000
      INTERLOCHEN - Ruth E. Budinski, 81, died at home Friday.
      Born Oct. 31, 1918, in Litchfield, she was the daughter of Frank and Nora (Kaiser) Sherk.
      On Dec. 29, 1937, in Napoleon, Ohio, she married John Budinski.
      A resident of Interlochen and formerly of Traverse City, she came to the area from East Lansing in 1946.
      Ruth was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City and was an active member of the Altar Guild and the Dorcas Society. She helped out at Trinity Lutheran School over the years where she might be needed and also worked on elections in Traverse City. Ruth enjoyed camping, reading, cooking, crafts and lapidary and will be known as a wonderful person. She loved her family very much.
      Survivors include her husband, John; children, John W. Budunski and Linda K. McFarland - both of Traverse City, Robert N. Budinski of Olympia, Wash., and Debora A. (Mark) Hall of Interlochen; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
      Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.
      Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City; services will follow at 1 p.m. The Revs. Donald Engebretsen and C. Jay Koehler will officiate.

      Died June 25, 2000
      EAST LANSING - Professor Charles Wesley Barr. Born Oct. 19, 1906, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He had been a resident of East Lansing since 1930 and a summer resident of Interlochen since 1946. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Landscape Architecture in 1929 from the University of Massachusetts. He earned a Master's Degree in Recreational Forestry from Michigan State University in 1940. In 1949 he earned a Master's Degree in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Charles first came to Michigan State University as an Instructor in Landscape Architecture in 1930. He progressed to full Professor in 1951. He taught for a total of 48 years in the Department of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. Upon retirement he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the M.S.U. Board of Trustees. He founded the Urban Planning Studies, which later became the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at M.S.U. He served as Chairman of Urban Planning Studies and developed the Departmental Library named for him. He wrote a book (Oct. 1950) entitled "Planning the Countryside," the legal basis for county and township planning in Michigan. Charles served as a Planning Consultant for numerous cities in Michigan including Lansing, Dearborn, Royal Oak, Roseville, also St. Cloud, Minn., and Dayton, Ohio. During World War II, as a civil employee, he was given the rank of Captain. He was proud to have taught courses of Combat Camouflage and Mathematics to Air Force personnel. During his teaching career, Charles traveled around the World studying city planning. He brought first hand knowledge and slides back to his students. The personal contacts he made have continued over the years. Charles was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He served as an adviser of the local chapter for many years. Other organizations include: Phi Kappa Phi, The American Institute of Planners, the Michigan Chapter of A.I.P., Michigan Society of Planning Officials (director and treasurer), and the M.S.U. Men's Club. He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church of Lansing where he was superintendent of the junior high department and taught senior high boys, and served on many boards and committees. He served the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches as Chairman of Religious Education, New Church Development, and served on the Executive Committee. He was also an associate member of the Congregational Church of Mt. Dora, Fla., where he served several terms as Church Clerk. He is survived by his wife, Mildred, who he married July 6, 1933; son, Charles W. Barr II of East Lansing; daughter, Marilyn Leppek (Alfonce) of Okemos; granddaughters, Jan Marie Cox (Dennis) of Lansing and Deborah Kay Leppek of Seattle, Wash.; brother, Howard (Margaret) of Austin, Texas; sister, Bernice Ragsdale of Austin, Texas; nephews, Richard (Mary Shipp) of Dallas, Texas, Alan (Mary Sue) of Austin, Texas, J. Stephen Ragsdale (Christie) of Lake Worth, Fla.; and niece, Nancy Lee of Glen Burnie, Md. Charles was an avid reader and stamp collector. He enjoyed being outside doing yard work. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, June 29, at 2 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, with the Rev. Penny Barnett, Associate Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lansing.       Dr. Robert F. 'Bob' Mosher
      Died April 7, 2000
      FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Dr. Robert F. "Bob" Mosher, lecturer of psychology at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, passed away Friday, April 7 at Flagstaff Medical Center.
      He was born Dec. 20, 1953, in Lansing, Mich.
      He and his family moved to Traverse City, Mich., where he attended public school and graduated from Traverse City High School in 1972.
      Bob later completed his Associate of Arts Degree at North Central Michigan College (Petoskey) where he also worked as a resident assistant, actively contributing to residence hall governance and student activities.
      Bob began his pursuit of a major in psychology at Northern Arizona University in 1978, and after completing his Bachelor's Degree (1981), was accepted into the Graduate College which led to his completion of a Master of Arts in Counseling (1986) and the Doctoral Degree in Educational Psychology (1994). He also worked as a counselor for Planned Parenthood and partnered in private practice at Aspen Counseling before completing his doctorate. He had been an instructor, then lecturer, in the Department of Psychology since 1992.
      Dr. Mosher was named Outstanding Teacher of the year in NAU's College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, 1998-99. Besides teaching courses that ranged from introductory psychology to personality theory, Bob also served as the current advisor for NAU's Psi Chi Chapter of the National Psychology Honor Society and field work coordinator for NAU's undergraduate and graduate psychology students. He was known by his students as a dynamic, effective and caring teacher who brought wit and insight into the classroom.
      Survivors include his mother, Marybeth Mosher of Traverse City; aunts Marjorie Nussrallah of Chicago and Margaret Childs of Grand Rapids, Mich.; several cousins; and a circle of dear friends.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Frederick Mosher Sr. of Traverse City in 1981.

      Marguerite K. 'Peggy' Naughton

      SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla. - Marguerite K. "Peggy" Naughton, 79, of Sanibel Island, died Wednesday.
      She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Nov. 1, 1920, and raised in Collingswood, N.J. She was a longtime resident of the Detroit area and Elk Rapids, Mich., and for the past 15 years resided on Sanibel Island.
      Peggy, a homemaker of 55 years, was a devoted and loving mother whose life centered around her husband and children.
      Absolutely no words could ever begin to express the supreme sorrow and loss felt by her family and many friends.
      She will be remembered in the community for her overwhelming generosity to numerous Catholic charities and many other needy institutions.
      Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, John B. Naughton, a former automobile executive with Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation.
      She is survived by her sister, Grace Brennan of Fort Lauderdale; her seven children, Donald, Susan, John Jr., Michael (Cindi), Brian (Shannon), Nancy (Mark Mayo), and Kevin (Jennifer); along with 18 grandchildren, Erin, Tara, Joy, Heather, Katie, Matthew, Mickey, Kelly, Cody, Frank, Brian Jr., Taylor, Johnny, Aidan, Creighton, Zachary, Jean, and Kyleigh; and one great-grandchild, Kyle.
      Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, June 28, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord, 8121 Cypress Lake Drive, Lee Memorial Park Cemetery, 12777 S.R. 82, Fort Myers.

      Grace Porter
      Died June 24, 2000
      FRANKFORT - Grace Porter, 94, of Frankfort, died Saturday evening at The Maples in Frankfort.
      Grace was born Sept. 22, 1905, in Frankfort, the daughter of Roy and Jessie (Smith) Collins. Grace graduated from high school at age 16, then went to Ferris Institute and received her pharmacy degree. Then she went to the University of Michigan for additional causes. At that time she was only 20 years old and had to wait until she was 21 to take the state board and receive her pharmacy license in 1926. Grace worked in the family owned drug store, "Collins Drugs," now known as Community Drugs.
      Grace was a member of the First Congregational Church in Frankfort and was very active in the Women's Fellowship. Grace held memberships in the following organizations: Grand Traverse Nature Conservancy, charter member of the Frankfort Study Club, life member of Mt. Oliver Chapter No. 327 OES, Michigan Pharmaceutical Association, Periwinkle Garden Club and life member of the Benzie Historical Museum.
      Grace loved her home in Frankfort and her little dog, Cindy Lou. She loved being out in her garden. In earlier years, Grace traveled through Europe, Mexico, Canada and the United States.
      On Sept. 30, 1929, in Frankfort, Grace married Milford Porter who preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 1983.
      Grace is survived by her daughters, Jean (Denny) Alspaugh of Spokane, Wash., and Faith (Jack) Dulaney of Gainesville, Texas and five grandchildren, Laura (Jim) Quick of Harbor Springs, Mark C. Johnson of Spokane, Wash., Brent G. Alspaugh of Vancouver, Wash., Amy (Jim) Bennett of Spokane, Wash., and Grace Dulaney of East Lansing. Grace is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
      Memorial services will be held on Friday, June 30, at 11 a.m. from First Congregational Church with the Rev. Dinah Haag officiating. Private interment will be in Blaine Township Cemetery.

      EASTPORT - Hattie N. Arnold, 83, of Eastport, died Tuesday at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.
      Born Aug. 13, 1916, in Essex, she was the daughter of Gerritt and Ida (VanderVeen) Nicola.
      Hattie was a life member of the Eastport Baptist Church. She owned and operated Hattie's Hut in Eastport for many years. She also operated Don's Grill in Bellaire and was employed by the Atwood Market for many years. Hattie was a house mother for the Psi Upsilon Fraternity at Michigan State University where she also worked in food service.
      She is survived by a son, Charles "Bud" (LouAnn) Arnold of DeWitt; a daughter, Shirley (Michael) Debelack of Glen Arbor; a brother, Anton (Mary) Nicola of Traverse City; three sisters, Sadie Brooks, Ida (Doyle) Richardson and Betty LaRouche - all of Charlevoix; one granddaughter, Julie (Dan) Magsig of DeWitt; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Wilbert and Gerritt Nicola.

      Born June 2, 1931, in Muskegon, she was the daughter of Aloysius and Lillian (Fabiszak) Kilinski. On Sept. 18, 1999, in Kasson Township, she married Jonathan "Tim" Baatz.
      A registered nurse, Joan graduated from St. Francis High School in 1949. She attended St. Rita's Catholic Church. Joan was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 199 in Maple City and the Platte River Rebekah Lodge IOOF No. 427 in Honor.
      She is survived by her husband, Tim, of Maple City; mother, Lillian Kilinski of Traverse City; son, John (Susan) Sassin of Tulsa, Okla.; daughter, Annette (Michael) Mercatante of Goodells; seven stepdaughters, Margaret "Peggy" Alexanian, Ruby R. Huber, Terri L. Warren, Roberta D. Baatz, Jeanine G. Baatz, April E. Baatz and Karen E. Baatz - all of North Carolina; a brother, Albert (Judy) Kilinski of Traverse City; a sister, Edita (Roger) Miller of Grand Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Sassin, in 1990; her father, Aloysius Kilinski; and a brother, Arthur Kilinski.

      PHOENIX, Ariz. - Anna Corn Brady, 97, of Phoenix, Ariz. and formerly of Traverse City, Mich., died Saturday, June 17.
      Anna was born April 23, 1903, in Norway, Mich. She was the owner and operator of Brady's Bar for 28 years. She lived in Phoenix for the past 30 years.
      She is survived by one son, Brian (Karen) Brady of Pahrump, Nev.; two grandchildren, Erin Brady of Grand Rapids and Shannon Beard of Traverse City; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Beard and Shane Patrick Beard; plus several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard "Bun" Brady, in 1979.
      Anna will be laid out at Shadow Mountain Mortuary, 2350 E. Greenway Road, Phoenix, AZ 85022 on Thursday, June 29. Services will be held on Friday, June 30, at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Phoenix Memorial Park.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Nellie Kuhn 87, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at the French Manor in Traverse City.
      Born Aug. 9, 1912, in Coal Center, Pa., she was the daughter of Anthony and Caroline (Trounts) Luke. On April 16, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio, she married Lawrence G. Kuhn.
      Prior to moving to Traverse City in 1995, Nellie lived over 60 years in Dearborn.
      She is survived by her children, Ronald (Edith) Kuhn of Bloomfield Hills and Elk Rapids and Lorrayne (James) Lewis of Maple City; grandchildren, Michael Kuhn of Birmingham, Gretchen (Daniel) Jakubiak of Waterford, Kelly Lewis of Maple City and James Lewis of Canton; and her brother and sisters, William Luke, Helen Rebel and Dorothy Briens.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, on June 25, 1995.

      She was a loving wife to her husband, Scott; and is also survived by her parents, Norman J. and Phyllis A. Smith.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Janet Ruth Wyckoff, 75, of Traverse City, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Oct. 18, 1924, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of George and Grace E. (Emerson) Drake. On June 7, 1942, in Traverse City, she married Warren F. Wyckoff.
      Janet was employed as a night switchboard operator at Munson Medical Center, a secretary at Children's Aide Society, Michigan Bell Telephone Company in Traverse City, Lansing and San Francisco, a medical receptionist for Dr. Paul Russell and along with her husband, Warren they owned and operated the West Bay Motel for 12 years. The many organizations she belonged to included the Traverse City Eastern Star No. 147, Gunton School Club, Munson Medical Center Auxiliary, active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women and Elizabeth Circle, Child Study Club No. 10, the "Hole in One" Group, and a member of the Munson Medical Center navigator program and Reach for Recovery. She spent 16 winters in Hobe Sound, Fla.
      Her favorite pastimes included golf, community activities, cooking, gardening, entertaining, traveling, reading and spending time with her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
      She is survived by her caring family, her husband, Warren F. Wyckoff of Traverse City; three children, Michael W. Wyckoff of Traverse City, Jon A. (Sue) Wyckoff of Traverse City and Kathleen J. (Jon) Rutila of Northport; four grandchildren, Ben and Becky Wyckoff and Tara and Josh Rutila; and a brother, William E. (Mary) Drake of Ithaca, NY.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Robert G. Drake on June 14, 2000.

      ELSIE L.G. MERRILL, 72, of Kalkaska, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Wilson.
      Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 30, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska. Visitation will be at the time of services. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska. The family is being served by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
     
      JAMES D. MILLER, 70, of Manistee, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, while fishing in Manistee.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 30, at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. No other services are planned at this time.
     
      Mary Godziebiewski
      Died June 28, 2000
      SUTTONS BAY - Mary Godziebiewski, 86, of Suttons Bay, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born May 3, 1914, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Frank and Antoinette (Misztura) Plonka. On Jan. 19, 1935, at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Detroit, she married Edmund A. Godziebiewski, who preceded her in death on May 9, 1985.
      Mary was a member of St. Michael's Parish in Suttons Bay. Her life centered around her family, whom she loved very much. She was a very gregarious person and everyone she met became her friend. She enjoyed talking to all people.
      She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Edward (Beverly) Newcomb of Suttons Bay; five sons, Robert of Traverse City, Kenneth of Holly, James of Suttons Bay, John of Waterford and Richard of Clarkston; a sister, Ann Humlinski; two brothers, John Plonka and Frank Plonka; 19 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by a son, Edmund, Jr.; two grandsons, John K. and John P.; and a granddaughter, Joelle.
      Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Visitation will also be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, where a vigil service will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Rev. Wayne Dziekan serving as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.

      Barbara J. Lannin
      Died June 26, 2000
      ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Barbara J. Lannin, 68, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Monday at Bayfront Medical Center after a brief illness.
      The daughter of Forrest and Frances Lannin, she was born on Jan. 12, 1932, in Traverse City, Mich., where she grew up and was a 1950 graduate of Traverse City High School. She was married to Armin G. Weng on Dec. 27, 1952, in Oak Park, Ill.
      Barbara worked for Western Union, the Oregon "Republican Reporter," the Ogle County "Life" and the Rockford "Register Star" while she was a resident in Oregon, Ill. A graduate of Rockford College in Rockford, Ill., she helped found the Ogle County Senior Center in Oregon, and later was the director of the Eastern Will County Senior Center in Monee, Ill. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lena, Ill. and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Oregon. Barbara lived in Texas prior to moving to Florida.
      She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Rick Runge of Mt. Morris, Ill.; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Karla Weng of Milan, Ill.; three grandsons, Jason, John and Matthew Weng - all of Milan; her mother, Frances Lannis; her sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Cliff Grosenbacher - all of Victoria, Texas; and her friend of 40 years, Robert Sanderson of St. Petersburg, Fla.
      A celebration of Barbara's life will be held on Friday, June 30.

      Died June 26, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Helen Arlene Oberholtzer, 71, of Traverse City, died Monday in Rapid City, SD.
      Born Feb. 28, 1929, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of James and Edith (Hermel) Hartley. On June 5, 1957, in Jackson, she married John Oberholtzer.
      Helen was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She graduated from Traverse City High School in 1947 and earned a teaching degree at Central Michigan University. She taught in Michigan, Ohio and California. Helen loved family and friends and enjoyed music and playing the piano. She also enjoyed all of God's creation.
      She was blessed with two children, a daughter, Nancy (Donald) Irish of Traverse City and a son, Michael (Christine) Oberholtzer of Minnesota; two sisters, Jeannette Fahlstrom of Traverse City and Phyllis Gallaher of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Courtney, Kim and John; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, John Oberholtzer, in 1988; her parents; and a brother, James Hartley.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. William Haggard officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Paul M. Socha, 46, of Traverse City, died Tuesday.
      Born Oct. 14, 1953, in Royal Oak, he was the son of C. Joseph and Emilie (Podkowa) Socha. On July 19, 1985, at St. Wenceslaus, Gils Pier, he married the former Mary Garvin.
      A private investigator for Research North, Inc. of Traverse City, he enjoyed mountain biking, canoeing and also was a foreign car and motorcycle enthusiast. Paul also enjoyed his Australian cattle dogs, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. A voracious reader, he was also a freelance writer and photographer.
      He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, of Traverse City; one stepdaughter, Kimberly Beadleson of Coconut Creek. Fla.; his parents, Joe and Emilie Socha of Traverse City and Troy; three sisters, Glorianne (Henry) Ebel of Rochester Hills, Michelle Socha of Traverse City and Marie (Dave) Skridulis of Madison, Ala.and a his dog, Danny.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suttons Bay with Rev. Wayne Dziekan serving as celebrant. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. Friday at the church until the time of service.

      COL. ALBERT JOSEPH BREY, 83, of Empire and Port Richey, Fla., died Tuesday morning, June 27, 2000, in Port Richey, Fla.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. A complete obituary will appear in Saturday's Record-Eagle.

      Christine M. Andersen
      Died June 28, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Christine M. Andersen, 83, of Traverse City since 1950, died Wednesday.
      Born Aug. 4, 1916, in Reed City, she was the daughter of Harry and Ida (Johnson) Lundborg. On May 29, 1943, in Reed City, she married Leonard Andersen.
      A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, she participated in many church groups including the Dorcas Society, taught Sunday school, and made over 500 quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She was active in the music ministry at Green Acres in Florida for almost 20 years and played piano for the Sunday morning church services at Bortz Nursing Home.
      She is survived by her husband, Leonard, of Traverse City; three daughters, Sharon (Ron) Kirby of Kalamazoo, Beth Andersen of Traverse City and Mary Andersen of Grand Rapids; one son, Mark (Annette) Andersen of Traverse City; one granddaughter, Christina Fitzsimmons of Kalamazoo; one great-grandson, Ryan Fitzsimmons of Kalamazoo; one sister, Naomi (Albert) Kroupa, Jr.; and one brother, Luther Lundborg of Reed City.
      She was preceded in death by one son, Richard, in infancy.
      A Service of Remembrance will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Donald Engebretson officiating. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.

      Hazel Evans
      Died June 28, 2000
      CEDAR - Hazel Evans, 81, of Cedar, died Wednesday in Cedar. She was born in England on Aug. 10, 1918.
      Hazel had been a 17 year resident of Clawson and prior to that a resident of Highland Park, coming to the Cedar area recently to be near her son and family. Hazel was a clerk for a manufacturing company for many years and was a member of the Clawson Eagles, where she was very involved. She enjoyed spending her time at the City of Clawson Friendship Center.
      Hazel is survived by her sons, John (JoEllen) Evans of Cedar, Roy (Joan) Evans of Huntington Woods; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
      At Hazel's request, cremation has taken place and family memorial services will be held at a later time.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Leland United Methodist Church or to the Clawson Eagles.

      Robert 'Bob' A. Titus
      Died December 17, 1999
      BURBANK, Calif. - Robert "Bob" A. Titus, 63, of Burbank, Calif., died on Dec. 17, 1999, at home after a long illness.
      Born on Oct. 4, 1936, he was the son of Gerald and Elizabeth (Kubis) Titus. Bob attended Traverse City schools, and was a member of the first seventh grade class to attend Traverse Heights School when it opened. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years and was discharged in San Diego. He made his home in California, retiring from Sears where he had been employed more than 25 years as a service technician.
      Bob was a generous, loving person who enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, golf, gambling, tinkering, playing the guitar, country music, and giving a hand to anyone in need of help. For several years he served as president of the Burbank chapter of Parents Without Partners and remained close friends with many of the members. He enjoyed his family and many friends, especially his coffee cronies, and felt he never met a stranger. Bob had a warm spot in his heart for his childhood friends and neighbors, and attended the "Boonville Neighborhood Reunion" held in Traverse City several years ago when he loved reminiscing about "the good old days."
      Survivors include a daughter, Tracy (Dane) Johnson; grandsons, Matthew and Christopher - all of West Covina, Calif.; his first wife and the mother of his daughter, Mary Ellen (Dan) Russell of Temple City, Calif.; special companion, Pat, who cared for him the last few years of his life; two brothers, Gerald (Jenny) Titus of Battle Creek and Larry (Marcia) Titus of Traverse City; a sister, Mary (Louis) Czubak of Traverse City; many nieces and nephews; longtime friend James Clous of Traverse City; and a special nephew, Rocky, who shared Bob's home.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elsie Maynard of Traverse City on March 9, 1997; a brother-in-law, Ken Maynard in 1983; and a brother-in-law, Edward Carpenter in 19991.
      Funeral services were held Dec. 23, 1999, at the Church of the Hills at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, Calif., conducted by Pastor William Pile. Graveside services and interment were held at Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City on Thursday, May 18, 2000, with Pastor Marc Hoard of Pine Grove Church of God officiating.
      The family was served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.

      Gerald M. Titus
      Died May 13, 2000
      BATTLE CREEK - Gerald M. Titus, 72, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, May 13, at home after a brief illness.
      Gerald was born May 18, 1927, in Mason to Gerald A. and Elizabeth (Kubis) Titus. He attended school in Traverse City and moved to Battle Creek in 1950. On March 11, 1950, in Traverse City, he married the former Jenny Hare of Alden, who survives.
      Gerald served during World War II in the U.S. Navy Seabees in the Philippines and Hawaii. He retired from WOTV (Channel 41) in 1982, where he worked as a carpenter, building sets and doing maintenance. He previously worked building houses for Gale Tobias in the Battle Creek area and was an automobile technician at the former DeNooyer Chevrolet and Cushman & Brown Oldsmobile dealerships.
      Gerald enjoyed spending time with his family, especially fishing and hunting, and two of his sons took him fishing for the last time one week before his death. For many years he and his family spent vacations camping at Interlochen State Park. He enjoyed bowling, listening to country music, playing his guitar, was an avid CB radio enthusiast and was a former member of REACT.
      Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons, Martin, Larry, David, Gary (Tonya) and Andrew, Jr. - all of Battle Creek, Jeff (Julie) of Fulton, Gerald (Carol) of Spring Arbor, Randy (Brenda) of Johnstown Township and Charlie (Cindy) of Assyria Township; a daughter, Mary (James) McLeod of Assyria Township; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Larry (Marcia) Titus of Traverse City; a sister, Mary (Louis) Czubak of Traverse City; many nieces and nephews; and longtime friend James Clous of Traverse City.
      Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Andrew A. Titus, on June 16, 1996; a sister, Elsie Maynard on March 9, 1997; and a brother, Robert Titus, on Dec. 17, 1999.
      Services were held on May 15 at Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home in Battle Creek with the Rev. Harold Cosby officiating and military honors from the United War Veterans Council. Interment was in Hicks Cemetery.
