He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Maureen Wyatt; brother, Jesse (Pat) Kilpatrick; and his stepmother, Agalia (Greilick) Kilpatrick. He was married to JoAnn (Siladke) Kilpatrick for the past 20 years. Receiving his masters degree from Michigan State University, Joe was a well known educator and local historian of Traverse City. His love of the community is demonstrated through the many organizations he participated in throughout his lifetime. Included in these accomplishments is the Rotary Club, Boy Scouts of America and Civic Players. Joe taught at Central Grade School in 1963, and was appointed superintendent of Cherry Knoll School the same year. During his years as superintendent/principal, he advocated for new methods of teaching so that all children would be able to learn at their own pace. During his years at Cherry Knoll he was appointed by Governor Milliken to head up the Environmental Education Task Force. He also participated in the MEA and NEA. After he resigned as principal he taught at Central Grade School where he was instrumental in starting the Gifted and Talented Program. He "retired" in 1988, the same year he was honored as "Teacher of the Year" by his fellow educators. Even after his retirement he remained a member of the Curriculum Advisory board of the Traverse City Public Schools. He set up teacher training programs for science and social studies. During this time he developed his "History in a Trunk" and local lumbering programs touring elementary schools. He was a member of the National Science teachers Association, and was an instructor for the Senior Academy NMC Extended Education program. During the last decade he became a well-known figure in Traverse City. He was past president of the Grand Traverse Pioneer and Historical Society, founder and president of the Grand Traverse Archeological Society, and a member of the Railroad Historical Society of Northern Michigan. As a member of the Michigan One Room School House Association, he specialized in researching and documenting regional one room schools. In 1998, he was voted "Historian of the Year" and was Grand Marshall for the Cherry Festival Heritage Parade. Never being able to keep his love of community and learning to himself, Joe began his famous history walks of Traverse City. As an extension of these walks, Joe began his "History on Wheels" program of Old Mission Peninsula. His diligent research of local history made these walks a favorite of tourists and local citizens. He was recently employed by the Con Foster Museum and was instrumental in the organizational and planning of the new Grand Traverse Heritage Center. In his "spare" time, he volunteered at the Traverse City Opera House, Festival of Trains, Cherry Festival, VFW bingo, Heritage Days at the Con Foster Museum and did history talks at local nursing homes. He was also a prominent figure at the thrashing machine or as the station master during the Buckley Old Engine Shows. His hobbies included gardening, photography, genealogy, camping, reading and traveling the United States. Just prior to Joe's death, a short story he wrote became published in the local book, Looking Over My Shoulder: Reflections of the 20th Century. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Died March 20, 2000 TUCSON, Ariz. - Larry C. Clark, Ph.D., M.P.H., internationally known for his work in understanding the role of selenium in preventing cancer, died Monday from complications related to prostate cancer. He was 51. "Larry's dedication to finding a prevention strategy for cancer was unparalleled," said David S. Alberts, M.D., director of Cancer Prevention at the Arizona Cancer Center. "There is no question that his contribution to the development of selenium as a cancer prevention agent is likely to live on for decades." Clark joined the faculty of the University of Arizona (UA) College of Medicine in 1987. He was associate professor in the College of Public Health and was a member of the Arizona Cancer Center. Until his death, he directed the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Projects in Selenium at the Arizona Cancer Center. He also was an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences in the UA College of Agriculture. Clark's research focused on the beneficial health affects of selenium in humans. His most widely known work was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in December 1996. This study provided the first evidence that, while selenium had no benefit in reducing skin cancer incidence, nutritional supplementation with selenium may reduce the incidence of prostate, lung and colon cancers. A second article that recognized selenium's potential for reducing prostate cancer risk was published in the British Journal of Urology in 1998. Clark's current research involves three complimentary clinical trials of selenium and prostate cancer prevention and progression that should help determine the role of selenium in this disease. In 1970, he received his bachelor of science degree from Alma College in Michigan. Clark then spent several years in the Smallpox Eradication Programme in Ethiopia where his interest in epidemiology developed. He completed a master's in public health degree in epidemiology in 1974 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and received his Ph.D. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. Prior to joining the UA faculty, Clark was an assistant professor of epidemiology at Cornell University. Clark received the "Pioneer Science Award" in October 1997 from the Cancer Treatment Research Foundation for his research on selenium and human cancer. This past October, he was featured on the cover of Cancer Research in recognition of the importance of his joint research in selenium and cancer prevention with colleagues B. D. Reddy, K. El-Bayoumy and E. S. Flala. The author of 29 journal articles, Clark was a member of the Quality of Natural Medicine Advisory Council, and served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Program in 1995. Clark is survived by his wife, Louanne; his daughter, Julia; a brother, Robert E. Clark M.D. of San Francisco, Calif.; a sister, Cynthia Sontag of Tampa, Fla.; and a brother, Ronald L.
