      Irene Eleanor Lathrop
      Died October 22, 2000
TRAVERSE CITY - Irene Lathrop, 73, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at her home after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
Born Jan. 1, 1927, in Flint, she was the daughter of Elmer and Esmee Allison. Irene grew up in Fenton where she attended high school and met her lifetime sweetheart and best friend, George Elmer Lathrop.
Because of World War II, George was drafted out of the high school senior class into the U.S. Navy. He was granted a few days leave after his basic training and came home to marry Irene. He married her in his dress Navy uniform and she was in a long beautiful white wedding gown which she paid for with the money she earned while cleaning houses. They were married at the Fenton United Methodist Church. The couple spent their honeymoon sleeping on the floor of a crowded train on its way to Key West, Fla. where George was stationed for the remainder of World War II. Irene and George were married for 56 years.
Living in Key West, Irene found a great love for Florida sunshine, exotic beautiful birds and flowers. Later in retired life Irene and George were able to return to their beloved Florida. They migrated there for the winter at their home on Pine Island. They summered in Traverse City, Mich. where Irene engaged in talks with neighbors and friends, walks to downtown and Old Town from her home on Cass Street and working in her beloved flower garden.
Irene and George worked together in the family upholstery business for over 50 years. They were regarded as master craftsmen in their community. Irene did all of the sewing work and George the upholstery work. They worked as a team. They retired 15 years ago and moved to Traverse City, Mich. to live.
Irene raised her family, with her husband George, in Fenton. They had two sons, David who now lives in Charlotte and Daniel who lives in Traverse City. Irene was a member of the Fenton United Methodist Church and made sure her children went to Sunday School. She also was a den mother in Cub Scouts for both David and Daniel.
Irene was an avid reader. She often commented "You can always find a good friend in a book." She encouraged her children to be good students. Through her encouragement and example they both are now successful professionals.
Irene was a private person who enjoyed her home, her husband, and of course her own company. She was an immaculate housekeeper and loved to work hard. She was also a devoted loving wife and mother. Irene loved a good party with family and friends. She was especially fond of Christmas and was always able to find just the right present for people but still stay on a limited budget. She loved animals, especially birds. She also loved her dogs (usually poodles) and one, Regie, survives her today.
Irene planned her own private memorial and wake, which was held Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000. After her cremation, her memorial was held at the Central United Methodist Church of Traverse City. It was complete with bagpipes, readings of her favorite poems and a beautiful rendition of "Danny Boy" on the church organ. Her memorial was immediately followed by a "celebration of life" at Mico's restaurant. Irene's ashes were laid to rest on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000.
Irene is survived by her husband, George; her sons, David and Daniel; a brother, Peter Allison of Ohio; and a sister, Bernice Fleming of Florida. Also surviving are her grandchildren, David Lathrop II and Casey Bradshaw - both of Charlotte.
Irene was loved dearly by her family and friends and she will be missed so very much. We are thankful that God shared her with us for 73 years.
Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army.
