A full obituary will appear at a later date. Elmer W. Grant Died November 9, 2000 BUCKLEY - Elmer W. Grant, 65, of Buckley, died November 9, 2000, as the result of an auto accident. Elmer was born December 3, 1934, in Lake Leelanau, the son of Arthur and Clara (Sylt) Grant and had resided in the Traverse City area all of his life. On Oct. 29, 1988, in Newberry, he married his wife Bonny Jean (nee Hutchinson). Prior to retirement, Elmer had been employed in the grounds and vehicle departments at Munson Medical Center. Elmer was a member of the Traverse City Church of Christ and he loved farming and inventing. He also enjoyed the out of doors and collecting guns. Elmer is survived by his wife, Bonny; by his children, Marlow (Karen) Grant of Traverse City, Marshall (Debra) Grant of Traverse City, Harold (Denise) Grant of Lake Ann, Valerie (Robert Scott) Grant-Wagner of Grawn, and Marlene (Bill Donner) Grant of Traverse City. Also surviving are his stepchildren, Gail (Thomas) Deans of Gaylord and Randall Stevens of Hanover Park, Ill.; nine grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Marvin (Hazel) Grant and Doris Skipski, all of Traverse City, Julia (Ernest) Johnson of Lake Leelanau, Louise (Wallace) Schaub and Betty (Calvin) Cole, all of Traverse City, Bernice (Otis) Conrad of Columbiaville, Eldon (Karen) Grant of Cadillac, James (Jean) Grant of Suttons Bay, and Jackie Harrington of Columbiaville, along with many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with Harold Reddick officiating. Burial will be in Cornell Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Hattie Mae Johnson Died November 10, 2000 GAYLORD - Mrs. Hattie Mae Johnson, 87, of Gaylord, died Friday, November 10, 2000, at Mercy Manor in Grayling. Mrs. Johnson was born to Roy and Nettie Small on August 13, 1913, in Mio, and moved to Frederic in 1932. She soon met her husband-to-be, Carl Johnson, and the couple wed in 1940. Together they owned AuSable Souvenir Works until 1958. In 1957, Carl and Hattie started the Underground Forest, which was later moved to Gaylord and renamed Call of the Wild. Mrs. Johnson is survived by three children, Bill (Bev) Johnson of Gaylord, Judy (Bruce) Fleet of Mancelona, and Janis (Don) Vollmer of Gaylord; 11 grandchildren, Kellie (John) Puroll, Pam (Todd) Morgridge, Julie (Tom) Charbonneau, and Morgan, Nick and Alex Vollmer, all of Gaylord; Diane (Terry) Bentgson of Cedar Springs, Bill (Joanie) Fleet of Mancelona, Kathy Morris of Sturgis, Tim (Pat) Fleet of Memphis, Tenn., and Lori (Peter) Angel of Metamora; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Don Small of Gaylord; two sisters, Bessie Pratt of Flushing and Edna Galbraith of Gaylord; two sisters-in-law, Eva (Roy) Papenfus and Elida Bearss, all of Grayling; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death in 1973 by her husband of 33 years, Carl. She also was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 13, from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. Jerry Batterbee will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday; 1 to 8 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the time of services on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Frederic. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735. flag Llewelyn Arnold 'Lew' Bone Died November 7, 2000 WILLIAMSBURG - Llewelyn Arnold "Lew" Bone, 52, born April 28, 1948, in Berkley, Michigan, died suddenly at home Tuesday in Williamsburg, Michigan. Lew, a Traverse City area resident since 1973 was an avid amateur radio enthusiast, computer technician and outdoorsman whose interests included wildlife photography and snowmobiling. Mr. Bone was the recipient of the Army commendation medal for heroism and three Purple Hearts for service in the Republic of Vietnam. Lew is survived by his father, Victor Arnold Bone of Berkley, many cousins, many friends, and his special friend, Laura Lakies. He was preceded in death by his mother, Velma, in 1998. Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The Rev. Sandra Murray will officiate and military honors will be conducted under the auspices of Cherryland VFW Post No. 2780. A graveside committal service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak, Mich. Gilbert Died November 7, 2000 KALKASKA - Kenneth C. Gilbert, 50, of Kalkaska, died Tuesday. Born Aug. 31, 1950, in Port Huron, he was the son of Kenneth J. and Laura (Johnston) Gilbert. On July 21, 1972, in Port Huron, he married Johanna Logan. Kenneth was a switchman for Grand Trunk Western Railroad for 20 years and was also employed as a truck driver for Halliburton Energy. He served for three years in the U.S. Army, including a year in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief. Kenneth enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Johanna of Kalkaska; a son, Kenneth (Amy) Gilbert of Kalkaska; a daughter, Leann (Adrian) Gilbert of Kalkaska; three brothers, Daniel Gilbert of Florida, and Randy and Jack (Sherlyn) Gilbert - both of Kingsley; two sisters, Laurale and Jill Gilbert - both of Port Huron; several nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Dave) Eble of Port Huron; two brothers-in-law, Michael and Tom (Luann) Logan - both of Port Huron; and four grandchildren. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James R. Gilbert, Services were held Friday at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Joan M. Kring Died November 8, 2000 FRANKFORT - Joan M. Kring, 81, a lifetime resident of the Frankfort area, died Wednesday evening at The Maples. Mrs. Kring was born on May 21, 1919, in Maple City, the daughter of Frank and Ann (Skipski) Vert. During her working years Mrs. Kring was employed at H.W. Jencks in Frankfort, Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital, Smeltzer's Orchards, Hazard's Garment Factory, Hill Haven Nursing Home and Sawyer's. Mrs. Kring was a member of the Pomona Bible Church and recently had attended Calvary Bible Church. On February 15, 1941, in Traverse City, she married Harry Kring who preceded her in death on November 27, 1989. Mrs. Kring is survived by her daughters, Mary Lou (Esse) Kuerth of Beulah, Lorraine (Bob) Martin of Benzonia, and Lole Lee Kring of Frankfort; three grandchildren, Phillip (Anna) Boman, Richard Kuerth, and Cathy (Gene) Yagle; and four great-grandchildren, Michelle Kuerth, Tiffany Yagle, and Elizabeth and Rebekah Boman. Mrs. Kring is also survived by a sister, Betty Pilon of Two Rivers, WI, and brothers, Frank (Punk) Vert of Maple City and Jack (Grace) Vert of Williamsburg. Mrs. Kring was also preceded in death by a sister, Martha Miller, and four brothers, Stanley, Joseph, Cash and Louis. Services will be held Monday at 1 PM from the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Finney officiating. Interment will follow at Gilmore Township Cemetery. Friends may meet with the family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider The Maples. |
