November 12, 2000ObituariesWILLIAM JACK 'PETE' MILLIKIN, 66, of Grayling, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at home. A retired co-owner of Jack Millikin, Inc., he was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Grayling.Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel in Grayling. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where visitation will continue from noon until the time of funeral services. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling. Stewart M. Butcher Died November 10, 2000 GRAWN - Stewart M. Butcher, 75, of Grawn, died Friday at Grand Traverse Pavilions. He was born on April 5, 1925, in Philippi, W.Va., to Grover Cleveland and Dorothy (Daugerty) Butcher. In 1945, in Traverse City, he married Ardath M. Reid, who survives. In 1942, Stewart enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his 23-year Naval career, he served on both sides of the United States, plus Hawaii and Guam. He was stationed in Traverse City from 1944 to 1945. He was a plank owner of the U.S.S. Saratoga. Stewart was employed for 20 years at the Traverse City State Hospital. He was also a member of Interlochen VFW Post No. 7493 and the Acme Masonic Lodge. Stewart enjoyed gardening, and hunting and fishing, especially with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ardath; four children, Larry Butcher, Janet Bauman, John (Carolyn) Butcher and Susan Taylor; five grandchildren, Phillip (Dawn) Meeker, Susie Sandstrom, Kathy Taylor, Jeff Butcher and James Karr; four great-grandchildren, Josh, McKenzie and Allison Meeker, and Amanda Sandstrom; four sisters, Bernice Starley, Pat Dees, Carol Melville and Bonnie Keller; and two brothers, William Butcher and Jennings Butcher. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jim Butcher; four sisters, Eunice Delauder, Naomi Robinson, Delta Campbell and Martha Butcher; and three brothers, Mason Butcher, Lacy Butcher and Robert Butcher. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., with a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service, on Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at First Christian Church of Traverse City. The Rev. Larry Ross and Chaplain Paul Schopieray will officiate. Burial will take place at Memory Hill. Memorial contributions may be directed to American Legion Junior Baseball or First Christian Church. The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Jeffrey H. McAllister Died November 9, 2000 HIGHLAND - Jeffrey H. McAllister, of Highland, formerly of Traverse City, died Wednesday in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Jeff was born Sept. 11, 1961, in Detroit, and had served in the U.S. Air Force in Turkey and Gwinn, Mich. from 1986 to 1990. He was currently employed by Superior Aviation. Jeff is survived by his wife, Linda Glazier McAllister; four children, Emily, Jennifer, Nathan and James; his mother, Barbara McAllister of Alpena; a brother, Brad (Mary Beth) McAllister of Fenton. Also surviving are his brothers-in-law, Jack (Barb) and David (Angie) and Pat (Tracy) Glazier and their families - of the Traverse City area; and a sister-in-law, Mary Anderson of Belleville. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, George C. McAllister. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Brian Moomey of Mt. Vernon, Mo. officiating. Burial will be at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to a fund being established for Jeff's children. Edward J. Morton Died November 8, 2000 NORTHPORT - Edward J. Morton, 69, of Northport, died Wednesday at home. Born Feb. 25, 1931, in Big Rapids, he was the son of Frank and Mary E. (Leigh) Morton. On Jan. 15, 1955, in Grand Rapids, he married Janice F. Fowler, who survives. Edward grew up in Caledonia and lived in Grand Rapids prior to moving to Northport in 1971. He was part owner of Commercial Carpet Craftsman while in Grand Rapids. While in Northport, he started The Glass Fabrics Co., a manufacturing company of tractor cabs. Later he started the Tomato Shop and then the Morton Hydrogardens. Edward was a wonderful cook and was known as the chief chef of the Northport Soup Group, and will always be known as the "lettuce king" of north Leelanau County. A pilot for many years, more recently he enjoyed fishing. Well known for his sense of humor and generosity, he was devoted to his family. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Edward served during the Korean War. He is also survived by his children, Bernard Morton of El Dorado, Calif., Alice (Doug) Johnson of Madison Heights, Mich., Walter (Gale) Morton of Northport, Mark Morton of Northport, and Christine Morton of New Orleans; a halfsister, Sandra (Frank) Zawacki of Grand Rapids; and grandchildren, Christopher, Gregory, Alexander, and Nicholas Morton of California, Eva, Carrie, Kyle, and Lucas Johnson of Michigan, and Bridgette Morton of Michigan. Edward was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Barbara Morton, in infancy. Smith, 62, of Alden, died Friday at Munson Medical Center. Born Dec. 1, 1937, in Bellaire, he was the son of King O. and Nora M. (Wilson) Smith. William served in the U.S. Army as an M.P. He was employed by the Antrim County Sheriff's Department as a sheriff's deputy for 28 years. Previous to that he spent seven years as a Detroit police officer. He was a member of the dive team with both departments. William attended the Mancelona Missionary Church. He enjoyed woodworking, scuba diving, cross country skiing and most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family who he loved very much. He is survived by his wife, Maggie, of Mancelona; eight children, Michelle "Jill" Pinkham of Detroit, John Smith of White Lake, Debra (Randale) McComas of Redford, William Smith of Alden, Christopher Smith of Hawaii, and Jason Smith, Barbi Smith and Daniel Smith - all of Alden; and four grandchildren, Nicole, Randale, Jr., Olivia and Elijah McComas - all of Redford. Also surviving are four brothers, Douglas (Doris) Smith of Bellaire, King (Martha Jean) of Bellaire, Elton Smith of Grand Blanc and Ted (Mary) Smith of Branson, Mo.; four sisters, Caroline Pfund of Bellaire, Rosalie (Mike) Pippin of Suttons Bay, Connie Hughey of Central Lake and Marilyn Ziegler of Memphis, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were a sister, Barbara Koutnik; a brother, Gene Smith; and his parents. The family will receive friends from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the New Hope Community Church in Williamsburg. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Bellaire.
