Virginia Mary (Wood) Lubig Died November 2, 2000 MAPLE CITY - Virginia Mary (Wood) Lubig died at Botsford Community Living Center on Thursday, November 2nd. Virginia was the daughter of Robert Wood and Nora Londrigan Wood and was born on Dec. 31, 1918. Mrs. Lubig was married for 58 years to Frederick James Lubig who preceded her in death in 1997. The Woods had four daughters, three of whom preceded Virginia in death. Mrs. Lubig moved to Leelanau County with her husband in 1982 after their retirement. She loved her family and she especially loved her two granddaughters, Colleen and Erin. She loved the outdoors and she loved to cook. She would often delight her family with her special lemon-dainty desert. Mrs. Lubig was preceded in death by her father and mother, her husband, Frederick, and her sisters, Francis, Marjorie and Norma. She is survived by her son, Michael. Cremation has taken place. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18th, at St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church in Empire with the Rev. Chad Zielinski serving as celebrant. Burial will be held at the church cemetery. Memorial funds may be directed to St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church building fund or to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, Michigan. Elsie Christine Smith Died November 9, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Elsie Christine Smith, 89, of Traverse City, formerly of Houghton Lake, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born Jan. 12, 1911, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Oscar and Hilda (Magnuson) Kneile. On May 15, 1936, in Detroit, she married Ralph Smith, who preceded her in death in 1972. Elsie lived in Houghton Lake for many years before moving to Traverse City in 1994. During World War II she was employed as office manager for Addressograph, making dog tags. She was also employed by Packard Motor of Detroit and later worked for Lenawee County Road Commission. Elsie was a member of Christ Redeemer Lutheran Church of Adrian, the Eastern Star and NCI, a Masonic travel group. Survivors include a brother, Norman Kneile of Niles; good friends, Neil and Ada Palmer of Adrian; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Pifer, in 1998. Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 13, at Christler Funeral Home with Rev. Calvin Long officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the donor's choice in memory of Elsie Smith. Ellen M. Tucker Died November 13, 2000 KALKASKA - Ellen M. Tucker, 81, of Kalkaska, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Mrs. Tucker was born in Kalkaska on Aug. 30, 1919, to William Wallace and Dorothy (Nelson) Simonson. On Sept. 28, 1940, in Traverse City, she was united in marriage with Donald Tucker, who preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 1949. Prior to her retirement, Ellen was employed as a secretary at Consumers Power Company in Traverse City. She enjoyed playing the piano, crocheting, cooking and baking. Surviving are her son-in-law, Alan Seeley of Rapid City; a granddaughter, Cassie (Brian) Allen of Big Rapids; a great-grandson, Nathan Allen; three nieces; and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Bonnie Seeley; and two infant sons. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. A service honoring the life of Ellen Tucker will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska with Rev. David McCool, Pastor of the Kalkaska Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska. Memorial gifts may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Thomas Eugene Oakley Died November 13, 2000 BIG RAPIDS - Thomas Eugene Oakley, 57, of Big Rapids, formerly of Kaleva, died Monday at his residence. He was born Aug. 13, 1943, in Muskegon, the son of Herbert and Julia "June" (Gray) Oakley. Thomas was raised and attended school in Kaleva, graduating in 1961. After graduation from high school, Thomas attended Michigan State University where he earned his master's degree. In 1968, he ran for a seat on the State Senate. Thomas had taught history, economics and government at Owosso High School; was a vice principal and principal at Merrill High School; was director of personnel at Kentwood Community College, Grand Blanc Public Schools and the Kentwood School Districts; and also was a labor relations consultant for the Michigan School Board Association until his retirement in 1992. Thomas was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva; and enjoyed golfing and traveling, and knew just about every back-road in the State of Michigan. He also liked to study history, politics, philosophy and religion. Most of all, Thomas loved spending time with his entire family. Thomas is survived by his son, Scott (Julie) Oakley of Big Rapids; his daughter, Trisha (Matthew) Bassett of Nebraska; six grandchildren, Jordan, Cassidy, Nicoli and Caijon Oakley, and Zachary and Jesse Bassett; two brothers, Arden (Helen) Oakley of Kentwood and Rance (Patricia) Oakley of Lake Ann; one sister, Janet Pihl of North Carolina; his second ex-wife, Jan Zietler of Midland; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first ex-wife, Marhsa (Howes) Nunn. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva with Rev. Kenneth H. Lein officiating. |
