Obituaries

ELSIE EMMA KAPKE, 94, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at her home.
      Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A full obituary will appear in Friday's Record-Eagle.
     
      Winfred N. Edwards
      Died November 15, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Winfred N. Edwards, 79, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Oct. 27, 1921, in Traverse City, he was the son of William and Gertrude (Freeman) Edwards. Recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Mr. Edwards married the former Vivien E. Savage on Oct. 14, 1950.
      Winfred was employed as a truck driver for the Darling Freight Company, retiring in 1977. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, camping and cards, especially euchre.
      Survivors include his wife, Vivien, of Traverse City; daughters, Valerie (John) Porter of Westfield, Ind., Claire (Kerry) Foote of Traverse City; half brother, Charles (Dorothy) Gordon of Traverse City; half sisters, Maxine Henges of Traverse City, Ilene (Stanley) Hill of Thompsonville and Dollena (Jack) Bird of Mesick; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepfather, Roy Gordon.
      Cremation has taken place. A gathering of friends and family will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Traverse City Senior Center.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Traverse City Senior Center or Munson Hospice.
      The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      Nicholas V. 'Nick' Hamilton
      Died November 14, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Nicholas V. "Nick" Hamilton, 70, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born April 5, 1930, in Charlevoix, he was the son of Ralph and Margit (Cherney) Hamilton. On June 11, 1955, in Muskegon, he married the former Anne E. Doran, who survives.
      Formerly of Charlevoix, Nick moved to Traverse City in 1960. He was a 1948 graduate of Charlevoix High School and attended Western Michigan College in Kalamazoo. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Nick was the owner and operator of Multi-Copy Service in Traverse from 1960 to 1984. He was a typesetter from the days of Linotype to the present days of the computer. Over the years he worked with the Charlevoix Courier and the Harbor Springs and East Jordan newspapers.
      In his younger years, Nick was active in scouting and achieved the Order of the Arrow and served as chief of the lodge of the order. He was a drummer with the Intercollegiate Stompers, an Ann Arbor dixieland band that won Arthur Godfreys Talent Scouts in 1952 in New York City. Mr. Hamilton continued to play with various northern Michigan bands and appeared on a record with the Slabtown Marching Society.
      Nick served on the city commission in the early 1970s and was very active in the Michigan Libertarian Party and served as a delegate at the national convention. In Traverse City, he was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a life member of Elks Lodge No. 323, and served as president of the Elks State Bowling Tournament. He was also secretary of the Traverse City Bowling Association for many years. He especially enjoyed politics, bowling, golf, movies and wearing his Bermuda shorts.
      Besides his wife, Anne, he is survived by two children, Susan J. (Timothy) Gillen of Traverse City and Nicholas J. Hamilton of Hanover Park, Ill.; two brothers, David A. (Christine) Hamilton of DeKalb, Ill. and Ralph Sam (Fumiko) Hamilton of Rantoul, Ill.; three grandchildren, Ruth Anne Gillen, Timothy Gillen, Jr. and Harrison Hamilton Gillen; one niece; and four nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Rev. Paul Megge serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools.
     
      Florence M. 'Toots' McManemy
      Died November 14, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Florence Myrtle McManemy, 89, of Traverse City, a loving, devoted wife and homemaker, went peacefully to be with her Lord Tuesday at home surrounded by her family.
      Born April 15, 1911, she was the daughter of Hugo and Matha (Felax) Domke. On Oct. 19, 1934, in Detroit, she married Chester "Chet" McManemy.
      A member of Bethany Baptist Church, Florence enjoyed painting, crafts, music, cooking, and gardening. She also dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      Survivors include a son, Victor McManemy of Traverse City; daughter, Carole (Fred) Fuller of Traverse City; grandchildren, Laura (Mike) Brennan, Lynda Fuller, Brenda (Nick) Maison, Greg (Mary) McManemy, Michelle (Steven) Brett, Shambus (Nicole) McClure, Donnell McClure and Tyrone McClure; and eight great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chester; daughter, Sharon Fay; two brothers; and seven sisters.
      Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Baptist Church with Pastor Don Sunman officiating. Burial will be at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
