November 20, 2000ObituariesWILLIAM F. LONG, 71, of Mio, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at West Branch Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 25, 1929, he was employed with Northflight EMT.Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Orr Funeral Home in Mio. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mio United Methodist Church. DOLLIE L. SAUER, 85, of Buckley, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Traverse City. No services are planned. MARLENE ELEANOR VANVOORST, 62, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. A full obituary will appear in Tuesday's Record-Eagle. Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Charles F. Arnold Died November 18, 2000 WILLIAMSBURG - Charles F. Arnold, 62, of Williamsburg, died Saturday. Born Feb. 1, 1938, in Alma, he was the son of Paul V. and Edna D. (Lambie) Arnold. On Sept. 6, 1958, in Lansing, he married the former Jean E. Curnalia. Charles retired from the Traverse City Area Public Schools and in his earlier years he was employed in finance. He was a volunteer for the Traverse City school athletics. Charles enjoyed fishing, hunting, nature and the outdoors. His special interest was in home building and landscaping. Charles is survived by his wife, Jean E.; daughters, Katherine (Lawrence) Murray of Ada and Kristin (Bo) Sundstedt of Lucas, Texas; a son, Mark (Kelly) Arnold of Traverse City; five grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Zue of Lansing; and a brother, Paul David Arnold of Lansing. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Chuck Arnold Memorial Fund for student athlete scholarships. Chester Arlington Richard, Jr. Died November 17, 2000 INTERLOCHEN - Chester Arlington Richard, Jr., 77, of Interlochen, died Friday at his home. Born Aug. 21, 1923, in Ithaca, he was the son of Chester A. and Blanche (McVeigh) Richard, Sr. Chester's parents moved to Alma in 1927 and lived there until August 1930. They later moved to Clare, where Chester attended grade school and high school. He attended and graduated from Michigan State University, earning a BA and MA in speech therapy. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater as a medic. He was a teacher, speech therapist and an elementary school administrator in Wayne County, Romulus, Department of Defense Schools in Europe, Wayne Community Schools (now Wayne-Westland) and Shiawassee County Intermediate School District, retiring in 1982 as a department head with speech and hearing services. In 1989 Chet and Marianne moved to their current home in Interlochen and spent their winters in Ocala, Fla. Chester was a member of the First Congregational Church in Traverse City and the First Congregational Church-UCC in Ocala, Fla. He was a life member of NEA and MEA (National and Michigan Education Association). His hobbies include photography, modeling military vehicles, Diaramas, jigsaw and 3-D puzzles, and rock and stamp collecting. He is survived by his wife, Marianne A. (Rathburn), whom he married on June 17, 1951, in Battle Creek. He is also survived by sons, Christopher (Vicki) Richard of Mt. Juliet, Tenn. and Craig Richard of Traverse City; a daughter, Carol (Mark) Haavisto of Jackson; a son, Curtis (Lisa) Richard of Rapid City; a sister, Joanne (Hugh) Maxwell of Clare; and four grandchildren, Joe Richard and Caitlin Richard - both of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Meredith Haavisto and Lydia Haavisto - both of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue officiating. Burial will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Mich. Memorials may be made to Munson Hospice. Della Ann (Pantazopoulos) Ross Died November 17, 2000 CEDAR - Della Ann (Pantazopoulos) Ross, 75, of Cedar, passed away peacefully at her beloved log cabin on Lime Lake on Friday. Born Nov. 22, 1924, in Midland, she was the daughter of Otto and Mary (Costello) Ross. She graduated from Midland High School in 1943. Della was very active with the Leelanau Historical Museum, the Zonta Club of Leelanau County, Cleveland Township Planning Committee and was a past president of the Lime Lake Association. She also accomplished many wonderful things in her life and her family and friends will miss her dearly. Known to her family as "Remarkable Del," she is survived by her children, Sue (Phil) Crossman of Grand Rapids, Tom Paulos of Grand Rapids, Mary (Alan) Priest of Leland, Kathy (Bruce) Bickel of Grawn and Peggy (Mark) Reinsch of Covington and Northport; her sister Joan (Charles) Grouix of Midland; two brothers, Charles Ross of Gladwin and Otto Richard Ross of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Marnie (Kurt) Kohler, Carrie (Tony) Ferguson, Jessica and James White, Jack (Heather) and Mark Bickel and Caroline and Christopher Reinsch; four great-grandchildren, Jacklyn Kohler, Robby, Jazmin and Tyler Bickel; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Marie and Betsy; and one brother, Pat. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will gather to remember her life on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Memorial services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Leelanau Historical Museum. |
