      Robert H. Bergstrom
      Died November 16, 2000
FARMINGTON HILLS - Robert H. Bergstrom, 71, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, as a result of severe diabetes and Huntington Disease, which he had courageously battled for the past ten years, the last seven while a resident at the Botsford Continuing Health Care Center in Farmington Hills.
Bob was born in Detroit on April 18, 1929, the third son of Elmer and Edith Bergstrom. He attended Detroit Public Schools, never missing one day of school from first grade until his graduation from Detroit Central High School in 1947. During his teenage years and beyond, he was an amazing athlete in such sports as baseball, basketball and track and field.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954, where he met his future wife, Nancy, from Providence, while he was stationed in Newport, R.I. On Dec. 20, 1952, they were married in Providence, R.I. After his release from the service in 1954, they moved to the Farmington Hills area, where they lived and worked until Bob's death.
Throughout his life, Bob was active in many community, charitable and church activities and endeavors. He was a charter member and chairman of the Kiwanis Club of Farmington Hills, chairman at his church, Faith Covenant, where he served in numerous other capacities, past chairman of the Farmington Founders Festival and longtime member of the Board of the YMCA in Farmington Hills. He was also a coach for Little League Baseball and coached his church softball and basketball teams. He was also involved in numerous other community and charitable activities too numerous to list.
In 1958, he found Bergstrom Insurance Agency, and later found and added Farmington Hills Insurance Agency to the company. He and his wife Nancy retired from the agency in 1990, at which time his youngest child, son Steven and his wife, Kim, took over the agency.
Bob will be remembered as a modest man of great faith and integrity whose priorities were his children, his grandchildren, his faith, and his belief in giving back to the community and to those less fortunate. Believing that travel was an indispensable part of one's education, he took his three children, Cindy, Gary and Steven, on various trips to all of the 48 contiguous states by the time they had reached their middle teen years. He taught his children the value of hard work and the need and obligation to give back to one's community.
Bob is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy; his daughter, Cynthia Yorke (Mike) of Beverly Hills; son Gary of Traverse City; son Steven (Kim) of Farmington; and five grandchildren, Adam, Erica, Andrew, Hayley and Tyler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were handled by McCabe Funeral Home in Farmington Hills, where visitation took place on Saturday, Nov. 18. An in-state ceremony was held on Sunday, Nov. 19, at Faith Covenant Church in Farmington Hills followed by a memorial service at which many tributes to and memories of Bob were shared by the hundreds in attendance. A private committal service and burial was held on Monday, Nov. 20, 2000.
Memorial contributions in Bob's name may be made to the Hereditary Disease Foundation-The Cure Huntington's Disease Initiative.
