Obituaries

      HERSEL U. CLEMENTS, 84, of Brethren, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Spectrum Health Center East Campus in Grand Rapids. He was born March 24, 1916, in Maple Grove Township.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Corfu Cemetery with military graveside services.
     
      ARCHABLE 'ARCHIE' M. MURPHY, 100, of East Jordan, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at Charelvoix Area Hospital.
      A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Sunset Hill Cemetery in East Jordan. Arrangements are being handled by Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan.
     
      RUTH O. PERRIN, 82, of Fife Lake, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center in Kalkaska. She was born July 25, 1918, in Kalkaska County.
      Visitation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home; burial will follow at Garfield Township Cemetery.
     
      LYLE PRATT, 87, of Honor, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at The Maples in Frankfort. A full obituary will appear in Friday's Record-Eagle.
      Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Friends may call at the funeral home at the time of service. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery.
     
      ANTHONY 'TONY' A. RUSKOWSKI SR., 72, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at home. A full obituary will appear in the Friday Record-Eagle.
      Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City followed by interment at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
     
      ARTHUR D. WHEELOCK, 85, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. A full obituary will appear in a later Record-Eagle.
      Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      Omar E. Lipe
      Died October 17, 2000
      TRAVERSE CITY - Omar E. Lipe, 76, of Traverse City, formerly of Muskegon, died Tuesday.
      Born Jan. 27, 1924, in Anderson, Mo., he was the son of Arthur Chester and Margaret Faye (Gaston) Lipe.
      Omar served in the U.S. Marine Corp for three-and-a-half years and was a member of VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780. He was also a member of the Green Lake Baptist Church. He was a Marathon Refinery worker in Detroit and Muskegon for 33 years. A retired employee of the Traverse City Record-Eagle, he was an avid golfer, hunter, bowler, woodworker and "all around handyman."
      Survivors include his wife, Leona (Gilness Basch) whom he married on Jan. 7, 1946, in Traverse City; children, Sharon (Gene) Yordy of Ravanna, Robert (Loretta Sue) Lipe of Interlochen, Rodney Lipe and David (Margaret) Lipe of Traverse City; siblings, Lloyd Lipe of Ohio, Olene Skyles of Tulsa, Okla. and Marie Shutte of Kan.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; 14 month old daughter Sueann; three brothers; and four sisters.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Bruce Sheets officiating. Military honors will be provided under the auspices of the VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780. Luncheon will follow at the VFW hall.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
     
      Charles Edward McKenzie
      Died October 17, 2000
      FIFE LAKE - Charles Edward McKenzie, 71, of Fife Lake, died Tuesday.
      Born April 12, 1929, in Flint, he was the son of Mark and Faye (Cook) McKenzie.
      Charles served in the U.S. Navy. An experimental engineer, Charles retired from General Motors Milford Proving Grounds Truck and Bus. He resided in Howell most of his life but lived in Fife Lake for 15 years. Charles was a member of the Fife Lake VFW and the American Legion.
      Survivors include three sons, Lee (Marge) McKenzie, Greg (Tammy) McKenzie and Bill (Anna) McKenzie - all of Howell; three daughters, Marsha (Tom) Kizer of Howell, Kay (Tom) Strobl of Livonia and Tammy McKenzie-Lloyd of Highland; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Earl McKenzie of Nevada and Edwin McKenzie of Battle Creek; and a sister, Sue Smith of Washington.
      He was preceded in death by a brother, Mark McKenzie and a sister, Jean Shockley.
      Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at MacDonald's Funeral Home in Howell, where visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. today. Family members will officiate. Cremation will follow services.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
     
      Minetta Ernestine Luper Linderleaf Neitzel
      Died October 16, 2000
      ELKHART, Ind. - Minetta E. Neitzel passed away at Eastlake Nursing Center in Elkhart on Monday. She was born in Traverse City, Mich., on Oct. 24, 1913.
      Minetta was a widow and she liked people. She was always willing to help someone out. She lived in California for many years and operated a small restaurant. Minetta was known as a great cook. She loved the northern Michigan area and always thought of it as home and visited frequently. Minetta loved animals and especially cats, she always had at least one. She was a loved mom and grandma and will be missed by all.
      Minetta is survived by a son, Kenneth (Barbara) Linderleaf of Traverse City; two daughters, Miriam Zmudzinski of Elkhart, and Lois Crawford of Bakersfield, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Fern Luper and Rose Wilson - both of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
      Minetta was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Luper and Daisy Milks Luper Wilson; her stepfather, Benjamin Wilson; and two brothers, Irvin Luper and George Wilson.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Don Sunman officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Donations may be made in Minetta's name to the Cherryland Humane Society.
     
      Laurel Ann Flaska Papineau
      October 18, 2000
      LAKE ANN - Laurel Ann Flaska Papineau, age 43, chose to be at home when she succumbed to breast cancer after four years.
      Born Oct. 26, 1956, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Charles J. and Marilyn M. (Morrison) Flaska. She lived in Leelanau County for most of her life. A graduate of Glen Lake High School, Laurie received her accounting degree from Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. She served as CEO for Leelanau-Redi Mix, her family's business, to which she was very devoted. Laurie was a member of Lake Ann United Methodist Church.
      She enjoyed boating - especially cruising, traveling and line dancing. A music lover who favored country western songs, Laurie treasured her grand piano. She cherished her family, her flowers and her home. A friend to all, Laurie loved people and had kept in contact with many whom she had grown up with.
      She was married on Sept. 2, 2000, to her wonderful loving husband, Charles, who survives.
      Also surviving are her parents, Charles and Marilyn Flaska of Maple City; her brothers and sisters, Elizabeth (Raymond) Warnes of Maple City, Scott (JoAnn) Flaska of Cedar, Jerry Flaska of Cedar, Kathi (Rob) Thoreson of Cedar, and Robert Flaska of Texas; her nieces and nephews, Kimberley Pugliese of New Jersey, Carrie and Corey Flaska of New York, Trevor Warnes and Tricia Fox of Grand Rapids, Brooke and Jolene Flaska of Traverse City, Cooper, Colby, and Cameron Thoreson of Cedar, and Charlie Flaska of Maple City; many cousins, aunts, and uncles; and many special friends.
      Laurie was preceded in death by her grandparents and two uncles.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lake Ann United Methodist Church with Dan Farkas serving as officiant.
      Burial will be in Cleveland Township Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to the Munson Medical Center Oncology Department.
     
      Agnes 'Aggie' E. Tomes
      Died October 16, 2000
      KALKASKA - Agnes "Aggie" E. Tomes, 89, of Kalkaska, formerly of Fife Lake, died Monday.
      Born Feb. 14, 1911, in Grosse Pointe, she was the daughter of James and Emelie (LaBeau) Couture. On Feb. 20, 1926, in Detroit, she married Thomas Edward Tomes, who preceded her in death in 1981.
      Agnes sewed for the Packard Motor Company in Detroit for ten years. She was later employed at Bob Leland Manufacturing in Detroit for 10 years. She moved from Detroit to Fife Lake in 1968 and then to Kalkaska two years ago.
      She is survived by two daughters, Edna Wheeler and Lillian (Jerry) Birgy - both of Fife Lake; a son, John (Freda) Tomes of Inverness, Fla.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
      Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.
      A Service of Remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, where the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor Jim Webb will officiate. Interment will be in Clark Cemetery, Springfield Township, Kalkaska County.
