RACZKOWSKI, 94, of Manistee, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Manistee County Medical Care Facility.Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, where there will be an evening prayer at 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will follow at Carmel Cemetery, also in Manistee. Stanley A. Cicilian Died October 17, 2000 ROYAL OAK - Stanley A. Cecilian, 87, formerly of Spider Lake, died Tuesday. He retired after 28 years from the Detroit Board of Education. He was the beloved husband of Helen; loving father of five sons, Freddie, Bob (Theresa), Bill (Marilyn), Tom (Bonnie) and Ron (Wanda); and dear brother of the late Mary Pustula. He also had 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. today at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 7060 McGraw, Detroit. Interment will be at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights. The family is being served by A. J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home in Royal Oak. Lester 'Dale' James Died October 20, 2000 CENTRAL LAKE - Lester "Dale" James, 91, of Central Lake, died Friday at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Born May 25, 1909, in Mt. Victory, Ohio, he was the son of Alva and Hazel (Cahill) James. Dale resided in Central Lake most of his life. He graduated from Central Lake High School in 1927 and following graduation he moved to Pontiac where he was employed by Pontiac Motor. He then returned to Central Lake where he owned and operated James Hardware along with his father, Alva, and his brother, Carroll. He was a past member of the Central Lake Masonic Lodge No. 426 as well as the Odd Fellows. On Dec. 31, 1929, in Alba, he married Dora Kirby, who preceded him in death in 1996. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Carroll; two sisters, Gladys Burnett and Mary Flickinger; two grandsons, Jim and Dale Scott; and his parents. Surviving are four daughters, Joyce (Richard) Gibbs of Auburn Hills, Arlene (Jim) Somerville of Contonment, Fla., Pauline Scott of Central Lake and Myrna Crouch of Lake Orion. Also surviving are a sister, Margaret Aenis of Lansing; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortenson Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Grace Community Church in Central Lake with the Rev. Estel Clark officiating. Interment will take place in Southern Cemetery in Central Lake Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lake Area Historical Society to be used for renovation of the Knowles House Museum. Stephen Mann Died October 18, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Stephen Mann, 58, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at home. Stephen was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He served in the Cuban blockade on the Intrepid from 1962 to 1966. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a cable splicer with Michigan Bell for 33 years and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. An avid fly fisherman, he was also a member of Trout Unlimited and the Fly Fisher's Federation. Survivors include his wife, Agnes K. Deering of Traverse City whom he married on Aug. 14, 1991 in Traverse City; two daughters, Lori (Tim) MacAlpine and grandsons, Matthew and Jason, of Crystal Lake, Ill. and Meridith (Jake) DeBeaussaert and granddaughter, Ashley, of Chesterfield; a sister, Rose Lang of Mt. Clemens; two nieces; and one nephew. He is also survived by a cousin, Stan and his wife Jan Krzeminski; special fishing friends, Scott Anderson, Skip Krasny and Bob Pankau; and his companions, five golden retrievers, Trapper John, Sundance, Mac, Timber and Tucker. As Stephen requested, cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Memorials may be directed to Trout Unlimited, Adams Chapter or the Father Fred Foundation. The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found; because trout do not lie or cheat but respond only to endless patience; because there are no telephones on trout waters; because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness; because maybe someday I will catch a mermaid. Testament of a Fisherman by John Voelker Mary M. Shumsky Died October 19, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Mary M. Shumsky, 92, of Traverse City, passed into the loving hands of the Lord on Thursday at Traverse Manor Assisted Living surrounded by her loving family. Born Feb. 10, 1908, in Dowagiac, she was the daughter of Bert and Frances (Miller) Claspy. In 1933 she married Frank Shumsky, who preceded her in death in 1970. Mary moved from Ludington to Traverse City in 1946. A graduate of Western State Teacher's College, she taught years ago in Niles. She was also a secretary at Immaculate Conception Catholic School for a number of years and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was also a member of Catholic Daughter's of America, The Ecarius Variety Club, Our Lady Discussion Club, Traverse City Women's Club, RSVP and a Red Cross volunteer as well as a volunteer for Munson Medical Center Auxiliary. She is survived by a son, Frank Shumsky III and his special friend Patricia Penney - both of Traverse City; a daughter, Margaret, and her husband Alan, Koechlein of Queensbury, NY; grandchildren, Frank Shumsky IV of Ypsilanti and Suzanne L. Shumsky of Tempe, Ariz.; and a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Shumsky of Traverse City. She is also survived by her extended family of caregivers from Traverse Manor whom she loved. Friends may call from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Rev. Paul Megge serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, the Father Fred Foundation or Munson Hospice. |
