Obituaries

NORTHPORT - Clare Arthur Cobb, 43, of Northport died Thursday at his home.
      He was born Sept. 16, 1957, in Traverse City, the son of Loren and Ila (Wheaton) Cobb. On Aug. 12, 1989, in Kalamazoo, he married the former Cindy Jo Rieck, who survives.
      Clare worked as a probation officer. He enjoyed baseball. He coached little league and volunteered his time to maintain the baseball fields. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
      He is also survived by his seven children, Samantha, Matthew, Maxine, Nicholas, Shawn, Kyle and Elijah; mother, Ila Cobb; grandson Austin; sisters and brothers Loren (Maryann) Cobb Jr., Brenda (Scott) Wyllys and children Bryan and Jonathan, Brian (Tonya) Cobb and children Bryan, Andrew, Chrissy, Kaleigh and Briton, Debbie (Perry) Harrington and Justin, Pat (Joy) Cobb and children Stephan, Christopher, Michael, Laurie, Stacey and Jessica; father and mother-in-law Kenneth and Violet Rieck; and many close friends and relatives.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Loren.
      Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.
      Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Northport with the Rev. Joseph Ripley officiating. Burial will be in the Leelanau Township Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Diabetes Association or the Kidney Transplant Foundation.
     
      GRAYLING - Stewart G. Rose of Grayling for 25 years, formerly of Flint, died Friday at his home.
      He was born Sept. 9, 1919, in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada, the son of Garfield Rose and Annette Day. Mr. Rose was married to the former Joan Cassiday on June 16, 1973, in Flint, who preceded him in death Oct. 5, 1999.
      Mr. Rose served in the Canadian Army during World War II from 1939 to 1946. He then worked for the Beecher School System as a maintenance man, retiring at the age of 61. Mr. Rose then moved to Grayling full time and worked at Grayling Township Compact Refuse Center. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church (RLDS) in Grayling. He was an avid woodworker and fisherman.
      He is survived by one daughter, Sharon Sterling of Florida; one son, Daniel (Helen) Rose of Flint; one step-son, Bill (Carrie) LaMotte of Grayling; one step-daughter, Janet (Duane) Brainard of Flint; mother-in-law, Evelyn Winistorf of Grayling; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Rose of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Hazel Herbert of Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada; and one brother, Lawrence (Elsie) Rose of Wiarton, Ontario, Canada.
      Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Sorenson Funeral Home in Grayling. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Elder Ann Doty and Elder Dennis Ormsbee officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Frederic.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Community of Christ Church (RLDS) in Grayling.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Judith "Judy" C. Jarvis, 58, of Traverse City died unexpectedly Friday afternoon at the Munson Medical Center.
      Loving wife of Richard for 33 years, mother of son John and daughter Jennie, she was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Rathsburg of Detroit.
      She is survived by four sisters and five brothers, Mary Elizabeth (William) Trampus of Madison Heights, Patricia (Robert) Johnston of Farmington, John (Marcie) Rathsburg of Clarkston, William (Sherlynn) Rathsburg of Carlsbad, Calif., Suzanne (Lawrence) Banas of Howell; twin brother Jerome (Bonny) Rathsburg of Norton Shores; Michael (Deborah) Rathsburg of Sterling Heights; Eileen (Kenneth) Banchoff of Trenton and Gregory (Renee) Rathsburg of Orchard Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A Scripture service will be at 8 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday.
      A funeral Mass will take place at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Most Rev. Patrick R. Cooney-Bishop of Gaylord Diocese, Monsignor F. Gerald Martin and the Rev. James Gardner celebrating.
      In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation, P.O. Box 2260, Traverse City, MI 49685-2260.
     
      BERNADINE WEBER, 74, of Kingsley died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001.
      Arrangements are pending at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
     
      CHRISTOPHER J. GRABOWSKI, 22, of Manistee died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at West Shore Medical Center following a water-related accident. He was born May 15, 1979, in Manistee.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. An Evening Prayer service will be at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mass from The Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Mary's of Mt. Carmel Shrine Church in Manistee with a burial following at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manistee.
     
      JONNIE JACK "SHOBIT" SAM, 71, of Manistee died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at his daughter's home. He was born Sept. 4, 1929.
      Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at The Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva with Rev. Russ Garrigus officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Interment will take place at The Corfu Cemetery.
     
      ANNE M. BLISS, 82, of Bellaire died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. She was born July 1, 1919, in Manistique.
      Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be at a later date at Eldred Cemetery in Kearney Township.
      Arrangements were made by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
      WILLIAM A. PORTER, 86, of East Jordan died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.
      The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Penzien Funeral Home, Inc. in East Jordan. A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in East Jordan.
     
      Services for LILLIAN "BILLIE" WARDELL, who died June 3, 2001, will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, August 19, in The Prayer Garden of The Presbyterian Church. Arrangements were made by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
