Obituaries


      TRAVERSE CITY - Bette E. Carmon, 64 of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Nov. 22, 1936 in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Leo and Hellen (Grelick) Higgins. On June 26, 1971, in Traverse City, she married Carl Carmon, who preceded her in death.
      A lifelong resident of Traverse City, Bette was employed for many years at Almar's Bar & Lounge as a bartender. She enjoyed polka dancing, garage sales, playing cards, the accordion and the piano.
      Survivors include her daughters, Brenda (Jerry) Milks of Kingsley, Cindy (Roger) Rickerd, Cheryl (Clarence) Reamer, and Sandy (Allen) E. Barhitte - all of Traverse City, and Kandy of Texas; sons, Edward (Valerie) DeLoy and Robert (Sandy) DeLoy - both of Traverse City; sisters, Bonny (Dick) Jakee of Traverse City and Judy Oetting of Mancelona; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      Bette was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward DeLoy in 1983 and Carl Carmon in 1998; her parents; brother, Pat Higgins; and brother-in-law, Jon Oetting.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.
      Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Kenneth Herbert Steed, 90, died Thursday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
      Born July 29, 1911, in Grant Township, he was the son of James N. and Bertha Alice (Bye) Steed. On June 10, 1933, he married the former Lucille N. Guernsey, who survives.
      A lifelong resident of Interlochen, Mr. Steed graduated from Buckley High School, Grand Traverse County Normal, and attended Central State University pursuing a teaching career. He spent 11 years as a rural school teacher in Grand Traverse and Manistee counties. During the war he traveled around with constructions crews, and formed and owned his own construction company for three years. In 1948, Mr. Steed joined the Interlochen Center for the Arts as Superintendent of building construction, maintenance and purchasing, and oversaw the construction of the administration building, hotel, and many dorms, retiring in 1976. He also enjoyed gardening, some photography and assembling family memory books.
      Along with his wife Lucille, he is also survived by his daughter, Fayma (Dean) Kuhn of Traverse City; son, Herbert L. "Bud" (Jane McClay) Steed of Vienna, Austria; brother, J. William (Agnes) Steed of Grant Township; sister-in-law, Helen Steed of Traverse City; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many wonderful friends.
      Mr. Steed was preceded in death by his parents; his infant daughter, Myrna Ruth Steed; and brother, Stanley.
      Visitation will be at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.
      Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Monday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Skar officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Interlochen Bible Church.
     
      MARTIN BANYAI, 78, of Manistee, formerly of Kaleva, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at his residence. He was born on April 1, 1923, in South Bend, Ind.
      Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Maple Grove Township Cemetery in Kaleva, with Rev. Floyd Soper officiating.
      The Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva is in charge of arrangements.
     
      CORA A. TAFT, 96, of Central Lake Township, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at the Eastport Village Care Home. She was born July 4, 1905.
      No services will be held.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
      BESSIE P. LAUTNER, 78, of Traverse City, passed away on Thursday morning at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Arrangements are pending at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      J.A. MILLER JR., 57, of Brethren, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. He was born on Oct. 3, 1943, in Clearfield, Pa.
      Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with Rev. Warren Wood officiating.
      The Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva is in charge of the arrangements.
     
      Services for MARIE O. KREGER, 92, of Elberta, who died early Wednesday morning at the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. from the Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort. Burial will take place in the Gilmore Township Cemetery.
      The family was served by the Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes.
     
      EMPIRE - Cecil W. Tegart, 79, of Empire since 1971, coming from Flint, died Wednesday at home.
      Born Aug. 2, 1922, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of Thomas W. and Mae (Spink) Tegart. On June 15, 1991, in Empire, he married the former Eleonora M. Kuebele Ray, who survives.
      Mr. Tegart served his country honorably with the United States Army during World War II receiving a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was employed by the Empire Community Museum, was a member of Empire United Methodist Church, the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Tegart was a stamp collector, cane collector, and enjoyed fishing and astronomy.
      Along with his wife Eleonora, he is also survived by his sons, Kim W. Tegart of Rochester, N.Y., Steven G. Tegart of Texas, Scott Tegart of Grand Rapids; step-daughters, Barbara Lynch of Indiana, Candie (Jim) Wiester of Pennsylvania, Bonnie (Keith) Kedzior of Michigan and Linda (Andrew) Sturgess of Michigan; brothers, Thomas K. (Violet) Tegart of Grand Blanc, David N. (Alma) Tegart of Waterford; three grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and one great-step-grandchild.
      Mr. Tegart was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Ruth Carrie Tegart.
      Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place at Empire United Methodist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Will McDonald officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Munson Hospice or Empire United Methodist Church Building Fund.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Margaret Simon, 79, passed away Thursday morning. Vern Simon, husband of 53 years, son Timothy Simon and daughter Christine Crowley were at her bedside.
      Cremation has taken place and there will be no services.
