December 3, 2001ObituariesJACK LOYD SLOAT, 73, of Fife Lake, died on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born on Sept. 13, 1928, in Garfield Township.Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today and on Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Garfield Township Cemetery. GEORGE J. "JIM" NOLLER, 60, of Central Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at the Charlevoix Area Hospital. He was born April 16, 1941. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 10 a.m. until services. A Memorial Service for RALPH P. LAYMENT, who died Oct. 20, 2001, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Military honors will be under the auspices of V.F.W. Cherryland Post #2780. TRAVERSE CITY - June Annette (Skiver) Waslawski, of Traverse City, died on Saturday at Traverse City Munson Hospital. Mrs. Waslawski, 59, was born on April 29, 1942, in Traverse City, the daughter of Carl and Irene (Lautner) Skiver, who survives. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and participated in the K of C Women's Auxiliary. She was an outgoing, fun and very giving person, who will be greatly missed by friends and family. She is also survived by her husband, Ray Waslawski, whom she married June 14, 1962, in Traverse City; by a son, James and wife, Lisa; by a daughter, Karen (Royle) and husband Michael; and by a son, John Waslawski, all of Traverse City; two sisters, Mrs. Larry (Ila) Stowe and Mrs. Terry (Gertrude) Ritola; brother, Mr. Allen (Alexis) Skiver, all of Traverse City; and two grandsons, Trevor and Tyler Waslawski, whom she adored. The memorial mass will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church with the Father James Hayden officiating. A rosary will be recited today at 7:30 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, where friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to family intentions. HOUSTON, Texas - Mary M. Zubler, 53, passed away peacefully at 1:01 p.m. on Friday at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, after a courageous 15-month-long battle with cancer. All of us that knew Mary, knew that she lived her entire life the same way she fought this lengthy illness, courageously and positive. She was born on Dec. 1, 1947, in Frankfort and was the youngest of 12 siblings. Mary had been employed as a nurse at MD Anderson from 1994 until she was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2000, and received recognition as employee of the month in August of 1995. She earned her LVN degree from Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac and her Associate degree of Nursing from Houston Baptist University in 1998, where she was named a member of Alpha Chi, scholastic honor society. She is survived by her husband, Michael Zubler of Houston; brother, Laverne Scott of Thomsonville; sisters, Ethel Lawrence of Elkhart, Ind. and Ardith Hazel of Traverse City; stepson, Aaron Zubler of Bloomington, Ind.; and other loving relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the Chapel of Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, where a Vigil Service will be held beginning at 7 p.m. with Deacon Al Vacek officiating. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, with the Rev. Niall Nolan as celebrant. Rite of Committal Services will follow in Memorial Oaks Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary's name to The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030. CEDAR - Donald Michael Galla, 57, of Cedar, died on Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. When Jesus came down, Don walked back to heaven with him. He was born on May 11, 1944, in Cedar, the son of Michael and Regina (Brzezinski) Galla. On Feb. 16, 1963, at Holy Rosary Church in Isadore, he married the former Geraldine Flaska. Don worked as a mechanic for Noonan & Sons and had worked at Traverse City Iron Works and Cone Drive Gears. He was a great father and grandfather and loved his family. Don was an avid snowmobiler and one of the founders of the Cedar Hill Toppers Snowmobile Club. He loved to hunt and fish, and most things done outdoors. He was a volunteer of Cedar Fire Department, a member of Lake Leelanau Yacht Club and also loved to watch the NASCAR races. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Geraldine; two children, Daniel (Merritt) Galla and Patrick A. (May) Galla; three grandchildren, Allan Michael Galla, Samantha Rochelle Galla and Laijuren Mae Galla; four sisters, Alvena (Stanley) Popa, Susan Stroebbe, Marie Feldman and Esther Crocker; five brothers, Stephen (Joyce) Galla, Leon (Loretta) Galla, Anthony (Georgetta) Galla, Walter (Marga) Galla and John (Virginia) Galla; sister in-law, Jean Galla; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul; sister, Dorothy; brothers in-law, Johnny Popa Sr., Bill Crocker, Stan Feldman and Lucien Strobbe. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. with a wake service at 7 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church in Isadore. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Grand Traverse Area Hospice and ALS Disease Research or Cedar Rescue Squad. Arrangements are being handled by the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. TRAVERSE CITY - Charles H. Abbott Jr., 63, of Traverse City, died on Friday at Munson Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Dec. 23, 1937, in Detroit, he was the son of Charles H. and Ula Mae (Shire) Abbott Sr. On Oct. 21, 1978, he married the former Marilyn D. Woodard, who survives. Charles was a retired public school teacher and a media salesman, and was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City. Recently, he worked as a retail sales associate at Wal-Mart. Charles was a sports enthusiast. In addition to his wife, Marilyn, of Traverse City, he is also survived by his three children, Dwayne Charles (Mary) Abbott, Allison Carroll (Brian) VanderBerg and Kevin Bryce Abbott, all of Grand Rapids; two stepchildren, Diane M. (Perry) Hall and Linda Vee (Kenneth) McDonald, all of Kalamazoo; 10 grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob, Noah, Bryce, Brianna, Jessie, Katie, Stephen, Emily and Betsy. He was preceded in death by his parents and his aunt and uncles, Vera and Bill Hoffman. Memorials services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City with Dr. Homer Nye officiating. Cremation has taken place. Private graveside services will be held later at Deepdale Memorial Park in Lansing.
