Roberta Louise Buck
      Died December 10, 2001
TRAVERSE CITY - Roberta Louise Buck, 72, closest friend and beloved wife of Bill Buck, died at her home in Traverse City on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001.
Born on Oct. 24, 1929, in Astoria, Ore., she was the daughter of James and Florence (Jalonen) Simmons.
The Bucks had recently celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on Nov. 9, the eve of the Marine Corps' 226th birthday.
In addition to her two sons, Timothy (and family) of Houston, Texas, and Kevin of Miamisburg, Ohio, she leaves a sister, Julia Kearney of Ann Arbor; a brother, Michael Simmons of Portland, Ore; uncle, John W. Jalonen of San Mateo, Calif.; and her aunt, Evelyn Palmrose of Astoria, Ore.
Her ashes will be returned to Astoria, her home town, and scattered on the Columbia River, which she loved so dearly.
An outstanding homemaker, Roberta was also recognized as a talented and highly successful business woman. A graduate of Astoria High School in 1947, she actually started her working career as a young girl in the fish canneries of Astoria. She literally worked her way up from a "fish slimer" to become the executive secretary for the president of Bumble Bee Sea Foods. She distinguished herself repeatedly in the banking world, both in Alaska and in Arizona. At the First National Bank of Anchorage, she played a critical role in preparing the original contract prospectus for the "Dew Line" in the early 1950s. In Flagstaff, Ariz., she was instrumental in providing the expertise and professionalism so critical to the establishment and success of the Bank of Northern Arizona. Her last professional position was serving as the executive secretary to the Minority Whip of the Maryland State Senate, Sen. Vernon Boozer, from 1985 through 1993. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend to all who knew her and she will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held at The Presbyterian Church, Westminster at Airport Access Road, on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Clatsop County Historical Society, 1618 Exchange St., Astoria, OR 97103 (503-325-2203).
Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
