Obituaries


      TRAVERSE CITY - Virginia Pykosz, 76, of Traverse City, and formerly of Utica, passed away on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Munson Medical Center.
      Virginia was born on April 19, 1925, in Hamtramck, the daughter of Stanley M. and Helen E. (Mrozinski) Pykosz.
      Virginia received a citation from the U.S. Treasury during World War II for her work there. She was later employed by both the Briggs Company and the Ford Motor Company. Everyone enjoyed her many talents, which included playing the piano, making floral arrangements and making her superb pizzas.
      Virginia is survived by two brothers, Stanley W. (Lillian) Pykosz of Empire and Richard A. (Ann) Pykosz of Capac; a sister-in-law, Margaret Pykosz of Empire; and 15 nieces and nephews.
      Virginia was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Paul Pykosz.
      The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the donor's church, or to St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Jack Addison Martin, 72, passed away Sunday evening at Munson Medical Center after a lengthy and complex illness. All of his doctors and nurses were valiant. His wife, brothers and sisters-in-law visited at his bedside during his last days. At the time of his passing, his wife and stepchildren were with him. The stepson he loved so dearly held his hand as he peacefully and blessedly left this earthly home.
      Jack was born in Muskegon on April 15, 1929, the son of Ross and Florence (Strickland) Martin. The family later moved to Northport and finally settled in Traverse City, where Jack and his siblings attended local public schools. Jack especially loved football and never read anything before the sports page, and never missed a game on television.
      Jack was very patriotic, joining the United States Air Force at a young age and spending 20 years as an aircraft mechanic with the Strategic Air Command. Many of those years were spent overseas in Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Panama and Hawaii. After retirement, Jack was hired by Grumman Aerospace Corporation for his unique skills and was sent to Miramar Naval Air Station where he was top mechanic on the F-14 Tomcat and other super jet fighters. He spent two years working on the Tomcat in Isfahan, Iran, before the fall of the Shah of Iran. Jack retired in 1989 to make Traverse City his home once again.
      Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Phyllis (Haines) Martin in 1968; his only child, Jack Addison Martin Jr. in 1991; and a sister, Dawn Hempstead.
      Jack is survived by his wife, Barbara (Phillips) Martin; stepchildren, Mignon Benenati of Goshen, Ind., Patricia Stouder of South Lyon and Louis LaGro of Elgin, IIl.; brothers, Ross (Marion) Martin of Traverse City, Richard (Bea) Martin of Jenison and Darwin (Eve) Martin of Flint; sister, Joyce Jarrett of California; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
      Jack was a life member of the VFW Cherryland Post #2780, where he spent many hours enjoying pool and friendship. He loved golfing with his buddies, too.
      At Jack's request, he will be cremated and laid to rest with his son in Oakwood Cemetery.
      He was loved. He will be missed. Rest in peace forever, Jack.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Thomas J. Lynch, 83, of Traverse City, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001.
      Tom was born on Feb. 27, 1918, in Petoskey, the son of Jeremiah and Ruth Ann (Faas) Lynch.
      Tom was a school teacher for the Traverse City Public Schools. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed the arts. Tom was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
      Tom is survived by his son, Jay (Jeanne) Lynch of Traverse City; and his two grandchildren, Jesse and Hannah Lynch, also of Traverse City.
      Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gerald Lynch; and his sister, Dorothy Schultz.
      A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City, with Rev. James Hayden as celebrant. Interment will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Trout Unlimited, or to the Grand Traverse Land Conservancy.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      HONOR - Florence M. Blough, 82, of Honor, passed away on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Munson Medical Center.
      Florence was born on March 31, 1919, in Beulah, the daughter of Noah and Hattie (Green) Beeler.
      Florence is survived by her children, Norm (Carolyn) Pelky of Honor, Jerry (Pat) Pelky of Honor and Julie (Kurt) Burtch of Freeport; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      Florence was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Pelky; and her second husband, Ervin Blough.
      Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
      A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, with Fathers Chad Zielinski and John Tupper concelebrating. Interment will be in St. Philip Neri Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Grand Traverse Hospice, Munson Home Care, or to St. Philip Neri Catholic Church.

      LAURA E. BLACK, 87, of Frankfort, passed away on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at her residence.
      Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the First Congregational Church of Benzonia, with Rev. Stephen J. Davidson officiating. Burial will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery.

      THERESA BOWLING, 89, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor.
      Arrangements are pending at Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home of Bear Lake.
     
      ARTHUR V. HORNER, 91, of St. Louis, Mich., passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Carson City Hospital in Carson City, Mich.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Frederic.
      Arrangements are by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling.
     
      FREDERICK E. KEVWITCH, age 95, formerly of Traverse City, died Tuesday, December 11, 2001, in North Carolina.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      VERN MAX ROBINSON III, son of Vern Max and Lynn (Bird) Robinson Jr., was stillborn on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001.
      A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at Evergreen Cemetery in Kingsley, with Pastor Cliff Burritts officiating.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
     
      BIRT G. SLYGH, 94, of Mt. Pleasant, died on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Mid Michigan Medical Center.
      Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Dec. 14, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the services, at Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasanton Township Cemetery.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Orlene M. Small, born Orlene Marie Brooks on July 20, 1930 in Manistee, departed from life on this earth on Tuesday.
      Orlene had been employed by Munson Hospital and was a member of First Christian Church where she was very active.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, John Small; son, Thomas Small; parents, Orlo and Marie Brooks; brothers, Orlo Brooks Jr. and Harold Brooks; and numerous aunts and uncles.
      Orlene is survived by her sons, David and Mark Small of Traverse City, Kevin Small of Houston, Texas, her daughter, Susan Jette of Houston, Texas; her five grandchildren, Alisha Jones, Ryan and Josh Beaver, and Megan and Jacob Small; and her two great-grandchildren, Layne Jones and Kyra Respress. Also surviving are her sisters, Lillian Hanson and her husband, Jack, of Manistee, and Beverly Brooks of Bear Lake; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
      A memorial service celebrating Orlene's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at First Christian Church, 3686 South Airport Rd. W., (just west of U.S. 31), Traverse City, with Pastor Larry Ross officiating. Friends may call at the church at the time of services. Inurnment will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to First Christian Church.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Raymond Thomas Spedding, 84, of Traverse City, died peacefully at his home on Friday, December 7, 2001.
      Born May 1, 1917, in Egremont, Cumberland, England, he was the son of Robert and Lillian Barnes (Bowe) Spedding.
      Robert was a man of few words, but among his other sterling qualities, he possessed a delightful sense of humor for which he will be remembered by his family and friends. He was a graduate of the Henry Ford Trade School and the precision work he learned there carried over into his hobby of constructing radio-controlled model aircraft. He retired as plant manager for Key II, Inc. Elk Rapids, in 1981. A member of Grace Episcopal Church since 1967, Raymond served on the vestry, volunteered at their food pantry, and the staff knew he was always available to help out when there was a maintenance emergency.
      Raymond is survived by his loving wife, Frances (Rowe), to whom he was married on April 28, 1938, at St. George's Episcopal Church in Detroit. They were blessed with, two daughters, Lynne (Ole) Stavedahl of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Laura Drummond of Huntington Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, David Edward (Kim) Mandeville Jr. of Eden Prairie, Minn., Laura Lynne (Michael) Pierce of Farmington, Minn., Bethany Drummond of Tustin Ranch, Calif., and Andrew (Jennifer) Drummond of Oakland, Calif.; and four great-grandchildren, Joshua and Nicholas Pierce, and Katherine and Kristin Mandeville. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Lind of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; nephew, William Deeb of Wyoming, Mich.; niece, Barbara Bryne of Davisburg; and numerous cousins in England and New Zealand.
      A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. D. Edward Emenheiser officiating. The Spedding family will be looking forward to greeting their friends after the service in the church parish hall.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Grace Episcopal Church Building Fund, or to the Cherryland Humane Society.
