December 14, 2001ObituariesFRANKFORT - Laura E. Black, age 87, of Frankfort, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at her residence.Laura was born on Nov. 27, 1914, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Akuszewski) Maciorowski. On July 14, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio, she married Gus A. Black. Laura was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who spent her time taking care of her family. She loved playing bingo, taking walks, watching her grandchildren in their many activities and helping her daughter, Jill, at her antique store. She will be greatly missed by her loving family. Laura is survived by her daughters, Jo (Trevor) Danford, Augusta (Gregory) Lamerson and Jill (Jack) Rineer; her six grandchildren, Troy (Nicole) Lamerson, Justin Lamerson, Sabra Danford, Nick Danford, Regan Rineer and Jesse Rineer; her two great-grandchildren, Amanda Tompkins and Cody Lamerson; her sisters, Irene Krupienski and Eleanor Povidenti; her brother, Stan Mack; and numerous nieces and nephews. Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Gus, in 1973; her infant daughter, Marie; and her sisters, Helen, Nell, Marie and Jean. Friends may call at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the First Congregational Church of Benzonia, with The Rev. Stephen J. Davidson officiating. Burial will be in the Benzonia Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Benzie Central Educational Foundation for Scholarships. Arrangements were made by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. TRAVERSE CITY - Frederick E. Kevwitch, 95, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001. Fred was born on Jan. 18, 1906, in Traverse City, the son of August and Ethel (Noffsinger) Kevwitch. He married the former Wanda Blanton in Detroit on Oct. 15, 1931. Fred grew up in Traverse City, then traveled for several years before settling in the Detroit area. He was employed by Garwood Industries in Wayne for 31 years, retiring in 1971. Upon his retirement, Fred moved back to the Grand Traverse area. His grandparents, Godfrey and Heneritta (Weiselberg) Kevwitch, began their journey to the United States in 1883, in a horse-drawn wagon, driving from Reichou, Kornigsberg, Germany to Berlin, and then taking the train to Hamburg where they boarded the ship Poloria. They arrived in New York Harbor on May 21, 1883. From New York, they traveled by train to Bear Lake, arriving on June 1, 1883. A couple of years later, they moved to Traverse City, settling on a farm on the east side of Silver Lake in Garfield Township, Grand Traverse County. This same farm is still owned by Fred's ancestors. Fred is survived by his two children, Donald (Carol) Kevwitch of Chocowinity, N.C., and Ethel (Chris) Settler of Holly; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Wanda, in 1982; a son, Charles Kevwitch, in 1974; and his parents. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the funeral home, with Pastor Louis Grettenberger officiating. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. ELI G. ALCORN III, age 84, of Northport, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001. Arrangements are pending at Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. ROBERT N. HEISEY IV, age 43, of Irons, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with an evening prayer service at 8 p.m., at the Herbert Funeral Home, Manistee. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at St. Mary's of Mt. Carmel Shrine Church in Manistee. Interment will be in Eden Township Cemetery in Lake County. Arrangements are by Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. LAKE ISABELLA - The Rev. James E. Cook, 71, of Lake Isabella, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. James was born in Benton Harbor on May 22, 1930, the son of Emory N. and Rosa (Hosbein) Cook. He married the former Anne Gurr on June 28, 1958, in Benton Harbor. They had resided in Lake Isabella for the last six years. James served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1954. Rev. Cook was a pastor for the United Methodist Church serving 11 churches in the Western Michigan Conference, Burnips-Monterey Center United Methodist Church from 1982 to 1985; Dowling-Banfield United Methodist Church from 1985 to 1986; Fenwick-Vickeryville-Palo United Methodist Church from 1986 to 1991; Trinity-Countryside United Methodist Church from 1991 to 1995; and Barryton-Chippewa Lake United Methodist Church from 2000 to 2001. Along with being an active member of the United Methodist Church's Western Michigan Conference, Rev. Cook was also a member of the Isabella County Soup Kitchen Board, starting when the kitchen moved to the Trinity United Methodist Church. Rev. Cook was a board member of the Wesley Foundation, and a former Sunrise Rotarian. James is survived by his wife of 43 years, Anne, of Lake Isabella; his children, James Cook of Traverse City, Cynthia (Rick) McClure of Eaton Rapids and Marsha Cook of Milwaukie, Ore.; his four grandchildren, Robert Grimes, Branden, Michael and Christina McClure; four brothers, Charles (Nancy) Cook of Stevensville, Don (Ebbie) Cook, Ray Cook, all of Benton Harbor, and Tom (Joan) Cook of Holiday, Fla.; and a sister, Donna Thomas of Benton Harbor. James was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Timothy; and a sister, Thelma. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Helms Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, at Weidman United Methodist Church in Weidman, with the Rev. Craig Adams officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributions may be made to Pardee Cancer Fund, or to the Isabella County Soup Kitchen. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. TRAVERSE CITY - Raymond Thomas Spedding, 84, of Traverse City, died peacefully at his home on Friday, December 7, 2001. Born May 1, 1917, in Egremont, Cumberland, England, he was the son of Robert and Lillian Barnes (Bowe) Spedding. Raymond was a man of few words, but among his other sterling qualities, he possessed a delightful sense of humor for which he will be remembered by his family and friends. He was a graduate of the Henry Ford Trade School and the precision work he learned there carried over into his hobby of constructing radio controlled model aircraft. He retired as plant manager for Key II, Inc. Elk Rapids, in 1981. A member of Grace Episcopal Church since 1967, Raymond served on the vestry, volunteered at their food pantry, and the staff knew he was always available to help out when there was a maintenance emergency. Raymond is survived by his loving wife, Frances (Rowe), to whom he was married on April 28, 1938, at St. George's Episcopal Church in Detroit. They were blessed with, two daughters, Lynne (Ole) Stavedahl of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Laura Drummond of Huntington Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, David Edward (Kim) Mandeville Jr. of Eden Prairie, Minn., Laura Lynne (Michael) Pierce of Farmington, Minn., Bethany Drummond of Tustin Ranch, Calif., and Andrew (Jennifer) Drummond of Oakland, Calif.; and four great-grandchildren, Joshua and Nicholas Pierce, and Katherine and Kristin Mandeville. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Lind of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; nephew, William Deeb of Wyoming, Mich.; niece, Barbara Bryne of Davisburg; and numerous cousins in England and New Zealand. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. D. Edward Emenheiser officiating. The Spedding family will be looking forward to greeting their friends after the service in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Grace Episcopal Church Building Fund, or to the Cherryland Humane Society.
