Arrangements are through Herbert Funeral Home, Manistee. JACK W. DUKE, 86, of Grayling, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001. A private family service will be held at Luzerne Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling. WILLIAM W. GOTSHALL, 81, of Lake Leelanau, passed away on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, at Suttons Bay Congregational Church. A full obituary will appear in Sunday's edition of the Record-Eagle. JULIA BERNICE INGALLS, 87, of Grayling, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Hilltop Manor Nursing Home in Roscommon. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel in Grayling. IRONS - Joseph William Verrett, 61, of Irons, passed away at his home on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001. The rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Irons, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, with Father Edward Boucher as celebrant. The family is being served by the Oak Grove Cremation Center of Manistee. TRAVERSE CITY - Carl J. Tanner Jr., 78, of Traverse City, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Munson Medical Center. Carl was born on March 12, 1923, in Traverse City, to Carl J. and Hazel E. (Powers) Tanner Sr. Carl married the former Elsie M. Smith in Traverse City on June 16, 1946. Carl retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1968, after having served in World War II, and both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He worked as office manager and treasurer for Cherryland Asphalt for 11 years, retiring in 1980, and then worked as a self-employed accountant for 15 years. Carl was a member of Bayview Wesleyan Church. He was a life member of VFW Post #2780, a charter member of Vietnam Veterans #211 and a member of the Air Force Sergeants. Association. Carl also served as a scoutmaster, cubmaster and commissioner for many years, and ran the D.N.R. camp #4 on Arbutus Lake for 15 years. Carl was an avid sports fan, hunter, fisherman and bowler. He really enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles as well. Carl is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elsie, of Traverse City; his four daughters, Ruth Ann (Al) Steffen of Loudenville, Ohio, Mary Ellen (Frank) Howald of Grand Rapids, Betty F. Jewell of Traverse City and Jacqueline Tanner of Alelanto, Calif.; his two sons, Sherman C. Tanner of Traverse City and Matthew (Michol) Tanner of Interlochen; his 14 grandchildren; and his 10 great-grandchildren. Carl is also survived by his sister, Dorthey Syndergaard of Port Huemene, Calif.; his sister-in-law, Florence Tanner of Traverse City; and his brother-in-law, Ray Gallivan of Traverse City. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son, Phillip Tanner in 1949; one brother, Floyd Tanner; two sisters, Audrey Tanner and Ella Mae Gallivan; and one brother-in-law, Neil Syndergaard. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, at Bayview Wesleyan Church in Traverse City, with Pastors Jack Steenbergh and Brian Jones officiating. Interment will be in Greenbriar Cemetery in Almira Township where full military honors under the auspices of VFW Cherryland Post #2780 will be presented. Memorial contributions may be made to Bayview Wesleyan Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. LAKE ISABELLA - The Rev. James E. Cook, 71, of Lake Isabella, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. James was born in Benton Harbor on May 22, 1930, the son of Emory N. and Rosa (Hosbein) Cook. He married the former Anne Gurr on June 28, 1958, in Benton Harbor. They had resided in Lake Isabella for the last six years. James served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1954. The Rev. Cook was a pastor for the United Methodist Church serving 11 churches in the Western Michigan Conference, Burnips-Monterey Center United Methodist Church from 1982 to 1985; Dowling-Banfield United Methodist Church from 1985 to 1986; Fenwick-Vickeryville-Palo United Methodist Church from 1986 to 1991; Trinity-Countryside United Methodist Church from 1991 to 1995; and Barryton-Chippewa Lake United Methodist Church from 2000 to 2001. Along with being an active member of the United Methodist Church's Western Michigan Conference, The Rev. Cook was also a member of the Isabella County Soup Kitchen Board, starting when the kitchen moved to the Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cook was a board member of the Wesley Foundation, and a former Sunrise Rotarian. James is survived by his wife of 43 years, Anne, of Lake Isabella; his children, James Cook of Traverse City, Cynthia (Rick) McClure of Eaton Rapids and Marsha Cook of Milwaukie, Ore.; his four grandchildren, Robert Grimes, Branden, Michael and Christina McClure; four brothers, Charles (Nancy) Cook of Stevensville, Don (Debbie) Cook, Ray Cook, all of Benton Harbor, and Tom (Joan) Cook of Holiday, Fla.; and a sister, Donna Thomas of Benton Harbor. James was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Timothy; and a sister, Thelma. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Helms Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, at Weidman United Methodist Church in Weidman, with the Rev. Craig Adams officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributions may be made to Pardee Cancer Fund, or to the Isabella County Soup Kitchen. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
