Donna J. Ream
      Died December 15, 2001
      BENZONIA - Donna J. Ream, 80. of Benzonia, died on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at her residence.
      She was born on April 23, 1921, in Illinois, to Thomas Shelton and Millie (Hall) Craighead. On Jan. 8, 1944, in Urban, Ill., she married Harry C. Ream.
      Donna had has been a resident of Benzie County for over 50 years, She was a former owner and operator of a dry cleaning business. Donna enjoyed her family, friends and community. She loved people. She was always concerned about others, and doing for them before herself. Donna was an active member of The First Congregational Church of Benzonia, and The Benzie Area Christian Neighbors. She was an avid mushroom hunter who also enjoyed gardening and being outdoors with animals and wildlife. Donna was a well-known seamstress and enjoyed making bears and quilts for others. Her final thoughts and reflections were: "It's been a wonderful life!"
      Donna is survived by her daughters, Mary Ream of Traverse City and Marla King (Tim) of Owosso; and her special companion, Tasha, her pet cat, who filled her quiet moments with lots of purrs and love. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins; and many very special friends.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Harry, on Dec. 13, 1994; and her two sisters, Ella Mae and Eva.
      A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20, at The First Congregational Church in Benzonia, with Rev. Stephen J. Davidson officiating. Burial will be in the Benzonia Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the church at the time of the service.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to The First Congregational Church of Benzonia, or The Benzie Area Christian Neighbors.
      Arrangements were handled by the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah.
     
      **FLAG** Jerry M. Erickson
      Died December 16, 2001
      ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Jerry Miles Erickson, 71, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001.
      Jerry was born in Leelanau County on Dec. 16, 1930, the son of William and Pearl Erickson.
      He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Ruth Berklich, and Cindy Erickson; two grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard (Mary) Erickson of Zephyrhills, Fla., and John (Beatrice) Erickson of Traverse City; a sister, Marie (Robert) Lemmer of Traverse City; and many cousins.
      Interment took place with military honors in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
      Eli G. "Joe" Alcorn III
      Died December 12, 2001
      DALLAS - Eli G. Alcorn III, better known as Joe, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001. Joe was born on March 19, 1915, the son of Robert Sabe and Edith (Maish) Alcorn. Joe was 86 years old.
      Joe was valedictorian of his high school class. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor's degree, and then graduated from the University of Cincinnati Law School. He practiced law in Ohio for a short time before moving to Menard, Texas, where he passed the Texas Bar and began practicing law there. Later he moved to Dallas. He owned and operated Alcorn Aviation and in that capacity was a flight instructor for fighter pilots during World War II.
      He was a member of the American Bar Association and the Ohio and Texas Bar Associations, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, several academic and honorary organizations, the Dallas Athletic Club and the Columbia Club of Indianapolis. Eli was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a yachtsman and served as Commodore of the Omena/Traverse Yacht Club. Eli was also an avid student of the Civil War and an accomplished bridge player.
      Joe is survived by his brother, Dr. Robert S. Alcorn Jr. of Colorado; his niece, Holly Bjornson of Colorado; his nephew, Dr. Joe Alcorn of California; and a niece, Gretchen Wagner of Colorado.
      He was preceded in death by a wife, Millie, who died in 1977, and more recently by a sister, Jan Peck.
      A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, at Leelanau Township Cemetery in Northport.
      Arrangements are by Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.
      DURWARD "DUKE" CRAWFORD, 81, of Mesick, passed away on Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Lakeview Lutheran Manor in Cadillac.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with Pastor Bruce Rose officiating. Interment will be in Minar Cemetery.
     
      BETTY JANE FLEIS, 75, of Traverse City, passed away on Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Munson Medical Center.
      A Funeral Mass will be celebrated today at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where the Rev. Fr. James Hayden will serve as celebrant. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Isadore.
      Arrangements were handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
      Donald H. Robinson
      Died December 11, 2001
      TRAVERSE CITY - Donald H. Robinson, 91, of Traverse City, entered into the presence of his Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001.
      Don was born in Washington state on March 4, 1910. He married Martha Jantz on Nov. 7, 1940, and together they had three children.
      Don worked for the National Park Service for 33 years. Don loved to sketch, was an avid reader and a master at storytelling. We will remember him for his zest for life, for his determination to live life to the fullest and for his deep love of people.
      Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha; his three children; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, at Faith Reformed Church.
      Julia Joan Cloud
      Died December 17, 2001
      BARABOO, Wis. - Julia Joan Cloud, 60, of Baraboo, Wis., died on Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at the University of Wisconsin Medical School.
      Julia was born on July 1, 1941, in Northport, the daughter of Earl Engles and Evelyn John. Julia married Lionel Cloud on July 1, 1941, in Wisconsin.
      Julia was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. She was a graduate of Northport High School. Julia enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, and was very active in her church and in children's education programs. Julia was also an avid gardener.
      Julia is survived by her husband of 34 years, Lionel; her parents, Clarence and Evelyn Manitowash; seven children, Keith, Melissa (Jim), Rebecca (Mike), Alice (Mike), Benjamin, Buckley and Sterling; one brother, Allen (Joyce) John of Kewadin; one sister, Joyce (Doug) Smith of Lansing; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, at the Indian Mission Church in Northport.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, at the church, with the Rev. Tom John and the Rev. Robert C. Grigereit officiating. Burial will be in the Leelanau Township Cemetery.
      Arrangements were handled by the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
      Dr. Nancy Ainsworth-Vaughn
      Died December 12, 2001
      KALKASKA - Dr. Nancy Ainsworth-Vaughn, 59, of Kalkaska, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in Bonaire Island, Netherlands Antilles.
      Nancy was born on March 12, 1942 in San Francisco, Calif., to Joseph and Marian (Jones) Ainsworth. Nancy married Dale Vaughn on March 8, 1986 in East Lansing.
      Nancy received her bachelor's degree from Rice University in Austin, Texas and her doctorate from the University of Texas. She was a native of New Mexico and Texas. Nancy worked as an editor with publishing firms in Chicago. She taught linguistics at Michigan State University from 1973 to 1996. She also authored the book "Claiming Power in Doctor-Patient Talk" in 1998, as well as a number of scholarly articles. She was a member of Turtle Conservation of Bonaire and active in marine conservancy. Nancy and Dale were avid scuba divers and enjoyed trips to the South Pacific, Australia and to the Island of Bonaire in the Caribbean.
      Nancy is survived by her loving family, her husband of 15 years, Dale; her daughters, Beth (Tim) Mazzola of Italy, and Robin (Michael) Vaughn-Strait of Johnstown, Ohio; her sons, David (Tracy) Johnson of Albuquerque, N.M., and Rick (Lisa) Vaughn of Nokomis, Fla.; two grandchildren, Brad Strait and Marcus Mazzola; brothers, David B. (Gael) Ainsworth of Fairplay, Mo., Joseph C. (Shirley) Ainsworth of Irving, Texas, and Jerry (Liza) Ainsworth of Roswell, N.M.; and dear friend, Elda Keaton of Dewitt.
      A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
