December 21, 2001ObituariesKINGSLEY - Harold David Magel, 71, of Kingsley, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001.David was born in Detroit on Dec. 23, 1929, the son of Harold and Gertrude (Hardin) Magel. David married the former Barbara Bennette on July 25, 1953, in Detroit. David was a veteran of the Korean War David was employed as a policeman for the Detroit Police Department and attained the rank of lieutenant before retiring in July of 1978. David was an avid bowler, hunter and outdoorsman. He enjoyed football and had served as captain of his high school team. He was a member of the American Legion Post #219, and Veterans of the Korean War. David is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barb; his daughters, Cindy Magel of Kingsley and Debbie (Robert) Rodriguez of Attica; his three grandchildren, David, John and Rene; his sister, Marilyn (Jim) Schucker of Gilbertsville, Ky.; and his brother, Tom (Penny) Magel of Zepherhills, Fla. David was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sally Magel; and a brother, Donald Magel. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home of Kingsley. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, at the funeral home, with the Rev. James Holtz officiating. Interment will be in Walton Junction Cemetery in Fife Lake. Memorial contributions may be directed to Traverse Hospice, the Fife Lake Fire and Ambulance Dept., the Fife Lake Library, or to Mass Intentions. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home of Kingsley. KALKASKA - Gordon G. Winner, 81, of Kalkaska, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Gordon was born on Nov. 20, 1920, in Detroit to Earl and Maude Winner. Gordon served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He married Elsie Throop on July 31, 1949, in Detroit. They lived in Berkley until Gordon retired from the Detroit Board of Education in 1982, after 33 years of service. Gordon is survived by his loving family including his wife of 52 years, Elsie; his daughter Joyce (Bill) Horne of Kalkaska, and his son, Joseph (Eileen) Winner of Livonia; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his sister, Kathleen (Bob) Howard of California. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, at the funeral home, with the Rev. BELLAIRE - Thomas E. Marshall, 69, of Bellaire, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Tom was born on Jan. 27, 1932 in Bellaire, the son of John Otis and Hazel (Patton) Marshall. Tom served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Tom resided in Columbus, Ohio for many years and had owned the Allied Riggers Company there. He married Mary Ann (Thimlar) Decker on Dec. 9, 1989 in Columbus. Tom returned to Bellaire two years ago and worked as a carpenter with MK Construction. Tom was a member of the Bellaire Wesleyan Church and also served on the board of directors. Tom is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his children, Robert Marshall of Arizona, Thomas (Adell) Marshall of Columbus, Ohio, Cheryl (Arnold) Shope of Columbus, Ohio, Vicki (Wayne) Smith of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Scott W. Decker of Niles, Ohio, Todd W. (Tammy) Decker of Struthers, Ohio, and Brian W. (Cassandra) Decker of Mancelona; two brothers, Clifford (Eldeva) Marshall of Columbus, Ohio and Grant (Sherrie) Marshall of Grand Rapids; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Ellen Cihak and Beatrice Tipton. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - Max Leroy Sanderson, 75, of Traverse City, and formerly of Bridgeport, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001. Max was born on Aug. 22, 1926, in Owosso, the son of Harold and Martha (Orser) Sanderson. Max is survived by his wife, Mary of Traverse City; his five children, Terry Sanderson of Bridgeport, Tim (Tammy) Sanderson, Tom Sanderson, Dan (Lisa) Sanderson and LuAnn (Scott) Rozema, all of Traverse City; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his four brothers and two sisters, Doris (Robert) Bonk, Donald Sanderson, Harold (Nellie) Sanderson, Betty (Fred) Schmidt, George Sanderson and Ronald Sanderson. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Martha (Orser) Sanderson, and a brother, Kenneth. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Francis Lambert, 86, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Tendercare. Mary was born December 20, 1914, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Capouch) Bolek and had resided in Traverse City for most of her life. Mary was a faithful member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the St. Francis Altar Society. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed for Cherry Growers for 22 years. Mary is survived by her husband, Richard C. Lambert, whom she married October 15, 1940, in Traverse City. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers, Frank, Fred, Joe, George and Ed Bolek. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, Dec. 22, at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rev. Father William Lipscomb serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. Visitation will take place this evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions and/or Mass Intentions may be directed to St. Francis Catholic Church. WILLIAMSBURG - Dorothea S. Bush, 83, formerly of Grosse Pointe Park, and dear wife of J. Ross Bush, died suddenly Wednesday in Traverse City. Born June 18, 1908, in Detroit, Dorothea was the daughter of Otto A. and Anna (Walter) Schmidt. She lived with her parents in Grosse Pointe Park for many years until her wedding with Ross on July 24, 1948. Together they resided in Grosse Pointe Park for 44 years before moving to Williamsburg to be near their son. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in education from Wayne State University. Dorothea later becoming the directing teacher for the College of Education students of Wayne State University. She was also an elementary school teacher for many years. Dorothea was a member of the Grosse Pointe Memorial Presbyterian Church for 53 years, was a church elder, and was very active in many church activities, including a five year stint of teaching kindergarten in the Sunday school. Mr. Bush was a member of the Circumnavigators Club and together they were world travelers. Dorothea was a cub scout den mother, a past president of the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church Women's Association, the Grosse Pointe Symphony Women's Association, the Detroit Theatre Arts Club, and the Detroit Boat Club Women's Association. She was a member of the Fine Arts Society, the English Speaking Union, the Friends of the Grosse Pointe Public Library, the Grosse Pointe Historical Society, the Founders Society of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Grosse Pointe Cinema League, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University Alumni Clubs, and the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She enjoyed gardening, boating, playing bridge, square and ballroom dancing, and was a theatre buff. Dorothea is survived by her husband, J. Ross; her son, Wesley R. (Teresa) Bush; step-granddaughters, Angela McDougall and Naomi Milks; her grandsons, Wesley R. Bush Jr. and J. Ross Bush II. A private family service was held on December 21 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Interment was in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, or to a charity of your choice. NANCY KATHERINE CRABTREE, 73, of Brethren, formerly of South Lyon, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at her home. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, with a special service to be conducted at 8 p.m. by the Order of the Eastern Star, Portage Chapter #289 at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Kaleva Baptist Church, with Pastor David Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Brethren Cemetery. Arrangements by the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. VIRGINIA M. SISSON, 81, of Traverse City, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Presbyterian Church. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
