Jay VanSteenis
      Died December 21, 2001
      MCBAIN - Jay VanSteenis, 88, of McBain, formerly of Traverse City, died Friday at Cape Coral Hospital at Cape Coral, Fla.
      He was born on Oct. 16, 1913, in McBain, the son of John and Kate (Koetje) VanSteenis. On Jan. 15, 1934, he married Pauline Cioma, she died on Jan. 28, 1981, and he married Marjorie Laarman on July 17, 1982, at Vogel Center.
      Jay retired from Ford Motor Company as a supervisor in 1970. He was a former member of the Faith Reformed Church in Traverse City and presently a member of the Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church. Jay was an avid fisherman and hunter.
      He is survived by his wife, Marjorie VanSteenis of McBain; daughter, Nancy (Donald) Borsvold of Suttons Bay ; three grandchildren, Jeffery and Debbie, Gregory and Lynnette, and Eric and Sherie; three stepchildren, Judy (Reg) Jenema of Marion, Bill (Lynn) Laarman of Houghton Lake and Dale (Setsuko) Laarman of Marion; nine step-grandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret (John) Wagner of Garden City and Wilma Dawson of New Port Richie, Fla.; brother, Herm VanSteenis of Huntington Beach, Calif.; stepfamily, Rich Herweyer of McBain, Kaye (Ed) Boelema of Wyoming, Joan Sikkema of Grandville, Clarence and Eleanore Koetje of Hudsonville, Carl (Jean) Koetje of Wyoming, Al (Carol) Koetje of Grandville and Rich (Jucy) Koetje of Grand Haven; and special friends, Alfred and Stella Lovejoy of Traverse City.
      He was preceded in death by his brothers, Basil, Ervin and Robert VanSteenis, and other family members, Til Herweyer and Jay Laarman.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Burkholder Funeral Home in McBain and one hour prior at the church on Friday. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Duane Timmermans officiating. Burial will be in the Ogdensburg Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church Building Fund.
      Bruno W. Uryasz
      Died December 21, 2001
      ACME - Bruno "Bud" William Uryasz, 64, of Acme, passed away Friday, December 21. He was at home and in the comfort of his family.
      Born Nov. 27, 1937, in Chicago, Bruno was the son of the late Bruno John and Helen Kotarba Uryasz.
      Bruno was the beloved husband of Diane (Dziak), and cherished father of Ronald (Hollie) Uryasz of Kingsley, Therese (Michael) Zielinski of Interlochen, Patricia (David) Hill of Bellaire, Karen (William) Miller of Dover, Del. and Victoria Uryasz of Rapid City. Grandpa "Choo-Choo" Bruno's greatest treasures were his nine beautiful grandchildren: Leslie Uryasz, Kyle and Hannah Zielinski, Alexis Hill, Katelyn and William "Billy-Boy" Miller and Annemarie, Emaly and Adam Panek.
      Bruno is also survived by his brother, Raymond (Mary) Uryasz, and sister, Delores (Donald) Grisko, both of Chicago. "Uncle Buddy" will also be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews.
      Bruno was family fixer of cars, clocks and train-sets. He was a lovely dancer, a music lover, an avid crossword puzzle solver, a huge NASCAR fan and a voracious reader. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed scenic drives, camping and fishing.
      Bruno was employed for 25 years by Sara Lee Bakery of Traverse City, the past several years as purchasing agent. He earned the respect of his many peers and colleagues as a man of high principles and work ethic.
      Bruno was preceded in death by both his parents; an infant brother; and his nephew, Gary Grisko.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Traverse City. Visitation will take place at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 26, from 4 to 8 p.m.

      Vida May Huston
      Died December 23, 2001
      MCBAIN - Vida May Huston, 80, of McBain, formerly of Traverse City, died on Sunday at her home.
      She was born on June 18, 1921, in Clam Lake Township in Wexford County, the daughter of Bartholomew and Helena M. (Medrow) Lemon. On Jan. 27, 1940, in Wexford County, she married Donald Huston Sr., who preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1978.
      Vida was a former member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Traverse City and presently a member of the Lucas Christian Reformed Church. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society. She had worked as a secretary for Darling Frieght Company, and worked in Foster Care Homes and did Home Care. She enjoyed Bingo, Canasta, puzzles, baking, quilting and doing seamstress work. She was a wonderful mother and was affectionately called Grandma Ducks by her grandchildren.
      She is survived by her children, Donald Jr. and Connie Huston of Mesick, Kathy and Phil Winkle of McBain and Brad Huston of Traverse City; grandchildren, Todd and Shannon Winkle, Tracy and Alisha Winkle, Joni and Becky Huston, Elizabeth Whitney and Jack Huston; great-grandchildren, Brittany and Bryce Winkle; sister, Lucille Willis of Lakeland Florida; brother-in-law, Bud Schmidt of Cadillac; and sister-in-laws, Maxine Schmidt of Burton and Reta Lemon of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
      She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Julie Huston; sisters, Irene Schmidt, Cynthia Nienhuis, Evelyn Curtis and Ossie Schmidt; and brothers, Reiny Huston, Clarence Huston, Gerald Huston and Gordon Huston.
      Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Burkholder Funeral Home in McBain.
      Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Lucas Christian Reformed Church and visitation will be held at 10 a.m. to time of service in The Church Fellowship Hall.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lucas Christian Reformed Church Building Fund.
      Amanda A. Gothrup
      Died December 23, 2001
      MANCELONA - Amanda A. Gothrup, 94, of Mancelona, died Sunday at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
      She was born on Jan. 25, 1907, in Mancelona, the son of William and Caroline (Grody) Schroeder. On Oct. 29, 1927, in Alba, she married John E. Gothrup. He preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 1999.
      She lived in Mancelona all of her life. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting and gardening.
      She is survived by eleven children, Juanita (Robert) Newkirk of Eatonville, Wash., Micky (David) Christensen of Trufant, Evelyn (William) Coger of Mancelona, John E. Gothrup Jr. of Sparks, Nev., L.G. (Juanita) Gothrup of Houghton, La., Louella (Phil) Meadows of Cadillac, Clifford (Janet) Gothrup of Mancelona, Margaret (Robert) Smith of McBain, Marilyn (Bud) Wilks-Alexander of Mancelona, Darlene (Robert) Pinny-Ingles of Mancelona, Dennis (Barb) Gothrup of Sacramento, Calif.; 32 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Tony Conway and Ardith Christensen; three grandchildren; one sister; and five brothers.
      The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona.
      Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. L.G. Gothrup will officiate. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Mancelona.
      DOROTHY H. OLSEN, 81, of Manistee, died on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, unexpectedly at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. She was born on March 21, 1920, in Manistee.
      Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manistee.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Johnson Funeral Home, P.C. 480 Water Street, Manistee, MI 49660.
      C. WAYNE CALLESEN, 68, of Titusville, Fla., formerly of Manistee, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, unexpectedly at the Parish Memorial Medical Center in Titusville. He was born on Aug. 17, 1933, in Mason County.
      Visitation will be held on Thursday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manistee.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Johnson Funeral Home, P.C., 480 Water Street, MI 49660.
      ANDREW J. VANOORDT, 87, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at the Manistee County Medical Facility.

      EDWARD A. SIMMONS, 84, of Traverse City, died Thursday Dec. 20, 2001, at Birchwood Nursing Center.
      Family graveside services are planned for the spring at Lakeside Cemetery in Muskegon.

      ALICE B. (RASKEY) RACZKOWSKI, 86, of Manistee, died on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Tendercare of Manistee. She was born on May 26, 1915, in Manistee.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Mass from The Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will follow the funeral mass on Thursday in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manistee.
      WILLIAM R. SHOWALTER, 88, of Onekama, died at home on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001.

      **FLAG** Thomas "Tom" James Cunningham
      Died December 20, 2001
      TRAVERSE CITY - Thomas "Tom" James Cunningham, 58, a life long resident of Traverse City, died on Thursday.
      He was born on Feb. 10, 1943, in Traverse City, the son of H. Boyd and Orpha (Waslawski) Cunningham.
      Tom was employed by the Traverse City Schools transportation department and drove bus for the special ed students. Previously he worked as an over the road semi truck driver and machinist. He also served in the United States Army Reserves. He enjoyed being outdoors and cutting wood. His attempts at gardening were usually thwarted by the deer.
      He is survived by his mother, Orpha Cunningham of Traverse City and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
      He was preceded in death by his father, H. Boyd Cunningham in 1978.
      Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday during visitation. A memorial mass will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the St. Francis Catholic Church, with Fr. James Gardiner officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Father Fred Foundation or to charity of one's choice.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      Geraldine "Gerry" Ella Condra
      Died December 21, 2001
      KINGSLEY - Geraldine "Gerry" Ella Condra, of Kingsley, died on Friday at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Gerianne Street. She was 78.
      Mrs. Condra was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Flint, the daughter of Early E. and Grace Pearl (Cook) Morton and was a graduate of Fenton High School. She married Marion "Tex" Alfred Condra on Nov. 12, 1943, in Rankin. He preceded her in death.
      Mrs. Condra was employed by Universal Electric in Owosso for 15 years as a secretary and inspector. Her last employment was with the Traverse City Public Schools where she loved working as an instructional aide. She attended the Spring Arbor Church of the Nazarene, was a Girl Scout leader for many years and had a great compassion for children. She loved snowmobiling, crafts, crocheting, knitting and most of all, spending time with her family.
      She is survived by three daughters, Linda Post of Ariz., Tamara and husband, William Parsons of Wyo. and Gerianne and husband, Terry of Kingsley; 10 grandchildren, Eric Rosema, Elizabeth Rosema, Tawnia Rowe, George (Amanda) Rowe, Faithanne and Matthew Post; six great-grandchildren, Brittany, Brianna, Ian, Ryan, Tylene and Johanna; siblings, Tom (Ann) Morton of Linden, Matthew Morton of California; Barbara (Wayne) Dunning of Fenton; special friends, Art Erickson of Flushing; and many nieces and nephews.
      Besides her husband, Tex, she was preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers, Harold, Aubrey, Charles, Robert, James, John, Walter and Ronald Morton.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Kingsley United Methodist Church in Kingsley, with Pastor Charlene Minger officiating.
