Obituaries

TRAVERSE CITY - Herbert C. "Herb" Catterfeld, 85, died Wednesday at his daughter's home in Traverse City after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
      Herb was born the son of Herbert J. and Hermina (Marks) Catterfeld on January 8, 1916 in Burt. On January 20, 1945, he married his best friend, the former Valdina E. Kaus of Saginaw.
      He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Southwest Pacific Theater in the U.S. Air Corps-Fifth Air Force, 22nd Bomb Group. He worked as a Project Engineer for Michigan Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1977 after many years of faithful service. Herb enjoyed the many friendships that he developed in his retirement as a member of the Michigan Bell Pioneers. He was a faithful Lutheran and a dedicated member of each church that he attended. Herb loved people and upon retirement enjoyed serving as a hospital volunteer in Traverse City and Bradenton, Fla. He also volunteered his services as an income tax consultant.
      Herb is survived by his three daughters, Ginger Hanes and Judy (Gregg) Blaszak, both of Grand Rapids, and Barb (Dan) Webster of Traverse City; and his son, Greg, of Torrance, Calif. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike), Kimberly, Lynne, Lisa, Scott, Laura and Jason. Also surviving are his dear sisters, Ruth Reinke, Nora Davis, and sister-in-law, Elva Catterfeld, all of Saginaw.
      Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Valdina, and his brother, Frank.
      Dad had a keen sense of humor and lived his life with an appreciation for the needs of others. He remained close to his extended family throughout his life. He also enjoyed traveling, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and walking. The family cottage at Long Lake was always filled with laughter.
      A memorial service will be held today, Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at noon, with visitation at 11 a.m., at Redeemer Lutheran Church, on US 31, 1/3 of a mile east of Interlochen corners. Rev. Timothy Mowry will officiate. An additional celebration of Herb's life will be held later this summer in Saginaw. His final resting place will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to either Munson Hospice or the hospice of your choice.
      The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Norma Jean Smith, 78, of Traverse City, died on Thursday at her home.
      Born Nov. 27, 1922 in Grand Rapids, she was the daughter of Conrad and Helen (Rice) Hampel and had been a Traverse City resident since 1968. On Oct. 6, 1945, she married Robert W. Smith in Grand Rapids.
      A charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, Norma was a member of the Daisy Chain of Elks, Quota Club and volunteered at the Cherry Festival. She enjoyed boating, sunning, sewing and decorating, but especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
      Norma is survived by her children, Michael J. (Sara) Smith, Richard W. (Joanne) Smith and Suzette (Gary) Chapman, all of Traverse City; four grandsons, Benjamin, Nathan, Justin and Judson. Also surviving is her sister, Marian Vietenheimer of Muskegon.
      Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Robert on Dec. 6, 2000, and by a sister, Margaret Karpavich.
      Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at First Congregational Church in Traverse City with Dr. Gary Hogue officiating. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice or to the American Cancer Society.
     
      BEULAH - Albert Willard (Pete) Orr, 84, of Beulah, died on Thursday at Munson Medical Center. Pete lived his whole life in the Beulah area.
      He was born on April 8, 1916, to Bert and Mary (Baker) Orr. Pete graduated from Benzonia High School in 1934. On Oct. 11, 1941 he married the former E. Margaret Rice.
      After graduating from high school, Pete spent 16 years in the oil industry. He was the co-owner of the Beulah Oil Company which was a gas station at the intersection of North Shore Drive and U.S. 31. He sold and delivered fuel for Standard Oil Companies in the Benzie County area.
      In 1955 Pete and Margaret purchased a fruit farm near Elberta. This allowed Pete to return to a family love of farming. At the age of 50 he left farming to become a residential plumber. He earned his Journey-man license while being employed by Washer Plumbing and Heating. Pete was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, golf, baseball and bowling. He managed the Crystal Bee Baseball team for several years and never missed a deer hunting season.
      His family was very important to Pete. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Barbara (Jim) Brian of Beulah and Peggy (Bob) Crissman of Schoolcraft; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Orr of Grand Blanc; three sisters, Margaret Swain of Visalia, Calif., Lillian Cook of Zepher Hills, Fla. and Florence (Gene) Stone of Beulah; two brothers, Ellis Orr of Naples, Fla. and Gene (Irene) Orr of Arcadia; brother-in-law, Douglas Rice of Benzonia. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Tim, Keith, Clint and Tom Brian, Phil, Brian and Eric Crissman, and Jennifer and Joe Orr; and eight great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his son, Jim Orr and his parents, Bert and Mary.
      Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church of Beulah. Rev. Ned Edwards and Rev. Marvin Rosa will officiate. A visitation and luncheon will follow the service.
      In lieu of flowers donations are being made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church or Homesteaders Senior Apartments.
      Arrangements are being handled by Oak Grove Cremation Center of Manistee.
