Obituaries

HONOR - Dale Vaughn McArthur, 45, of Honor, died on Sunday, January 28, 2001, at West Shore Medical Center.
      Born on October 13, 1955, in Groton, Conn., he was the son of Dale L. and Gretchen A. (Martin) McArthur.
      He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1973 to 1975.
      He is survived by his mother, Gretchen A. McArthur; sister, Karen (Mike) Bailey, both from Honor; a niece, Kendra Bailey; a nephew, Troy Bailey; and his grandmother, Inez McArthur. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
      He was preceded in death by his father in 1997.
      Friends may call at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until time of service.
      Services will be held at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home on Wednesday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Thomas Maher officiating. Burial will be held at the Champion Hill Cemetery.
      Memorials may be made to the charity of one's own choice.
      WILLIAMSBURG - Loren A. Cobb, 74, of Williamsburg, died Jan. 28, 2001, at Munson Medical Center.
      He was born on October 1, 1926, in Grand Rapids, the son of Clarence and Myrtle (Gossen) Cobb. In 1957 in Alba, he married Ila Wheaton.
      He enjoyed fishing and working with wood, and also liked to spend time with his family and teaching his grandchildren to work with the tractor. He also enjoyed the outdoors. Loren served in the Army and Airforce and he was a lifetime member of V.F.W.
      Loren is survived by his wife, Ila; his children, Loren (Mary Ann) Cobb Jr. of Traverse City, Clare (Cindy) Cobb of Northport, Brenda (Scott) Wyllys of Lakes of the North, Brian (Tonya) Cobb of Florida, Debbie (Perry) Harrington of Traverse City and Pat (Joy) Cobb of Gaylord. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren; Samantha, Maxine, Matthew, Nick, Shawn, Kyle, Eli, Bryan, Jonny, Bryan "B.J.", Andy, Chrissy, Kaleigh, Briton, Justin, Stephan, Chris, Michael, Laurie, Stacey, Jesse; one great-grandchild, Austin; two brothers, George of N.C. and Frank of Calif.; a sister, Lois (Frank) Wickham of Ravenna; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Clarence Jr.; and sister, Florence.
      Friends may call at 1:30 p.m. at the church. A Celebration of Life for Loren will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Bates Missionary Church, with Rev. Joe Purdy and Rev. Clifford Batterbee officiating.
      Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elk Rapids. Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Memorials may be made to Bates Missionary Church.
      GOOD HARBOR - Lloyd John Eitzen, 74, of Good Harbor, died peacefully on Tuesday at his home.
      Lloyd was born on November 1, 1926, in Good Harbor, the son of Claus and Clara (Wahl) Eitzen. On February 14, 1953, in Flint, he married Virginia Maslanka, who survives.
      Lloyd was a lifelong, second generation cherry farmer. He also worked as a manager in the early development of Sugar Loaf Mountain Resort. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He was also a former member of the Leelanau Mounted Patrol, and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Good Harbor.
      He is survived by two sons, Gerald (Peggy) Eitzen of Amarillo, Texas, and Robert (Nancy) Eitzen of Good Harbor; three daughters, Karen (James) Rennie of Good Harbor, Kim Eitzen of Good Harbor and Mary Ann (Rey) Vigil of Charlotte; sister, Lorraine Kravontka of Traverse City; sister-in-law, Sr. Anne Maslanka of Cleveland, Ohio; brother-in-law, Rev. Walter Anthony of Good Harbor; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lyle; and two sisters, Lucille and Inza.
      Friends may call on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay.
      Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Good Harbor, with Rev. Lawrence K. Matro officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
      SOUTH BOARDMAN - Mrs. Donna J. Jackson, 85, loving mother and grandmother, passed over to join her husband Monday at her home in South Boardman.
      Born in Crawford County on January 27, 1916, she was the daughter of George and Eva (Benedict) Kniss. She married Robert Jackson in Clare County on April 14, 1935. He preceded her in death on September 7, 1996.
      Mrs. Jackson had been a lifelong resident of Kalkaska County. She retired in 1978 from Kalkaska Memorial Health Center after 30 years as a lab and x-ray technician. She was a member of Bear Lake Christian Church, Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Auxiliary and the Kalkaska County Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening and genealogy.
      Surviving are three sons, Fay (Edna) Jackson of Kalkaska, Clifford (Kay) Jackson of Gladstone and Clesson (Mary) Jackson of Grand Rapids; five daughters, Roberta (Jerry) Bruinekool of Grand Rapids, Jeanne (Dick) Lee, Patricia (Will) Rodgers and Phyllis Jackson, all of Kalkaska, and Annabelle (Donald) Haviland of Rockford; five brothers, Gordon (Mildred) Kniss, Boyd (Ruth) Kniss and Dale (Ruth) Kniss, all of Kalkaska, Wayne (Beulah) Kniss of Gainesville, Texas, and Daryl (Maxine) Kniss of Traverse City; 29 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
      Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter.
      Friends may call today, Wednesday, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska from 6 to 9 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bear Lake Christian Church. Pastor David Rosenberg will officiate. Burial will be in Lodi Cemetery, Kalkaska County.
      Memorial gifts may be made to Munson Hospice or the Bear Lake Christian Church.
      TRAVERSE CITY - Robert Lee Whipp, 75, of Traverse City, died on Monday at Munson Medical Center.
      He was born on May 5, 1925, in New Lebanon, Ohio, the son of Chester LeRoy and Lillian (McCarty) Whipp. On January 7, 1945, in Traverse City, Bob married the former Christina C. Fasel.
      Bob was a Navy Veteran, having enlisted in 1943. He was a life member of Cherryland VFW Post 2780. He had been employed as a press operator at J.P. Industries, retiring after 30 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling, and was a great NASCAR fan.
      He is survived by his wife, Christina; six children, Richard (Sandra L.) Whipp, Sandy Kay Whipp, Bonnie (Delton LeRoy) Hendges, Michael (Mary A.) Whipp, Tina (Ed, Jr.) Brown, and Tammy (Terry) Rickerd, all from Traverse City. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Funeral services will be held on Friday at 3 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. The Rev. Fr. William Lipscomb will officiate, with military honors by Cherryland VFW Post 2780. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

      H. KATHRYN GUY, 88, of Traverse City, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Munson Medical Center following an automobile accident. She was born on Jan. 25, 1913 in South Bend, Ind.
      A memorial service will be held at Clay United Methodist Church, 17646 Cleveland Road, South Bend, Ind., Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
      Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      OLIVE R. MCMANUS, 86, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001 at Grand Traverse Pavilions.

      LORRAINE V. ALTICE, 78, of Manistee, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at West Shore Medical Center. She was born on November 10, 1922, in Manistee.
      A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday. Visitation will take place from 7 p.m. until the time of the service at the Herbert Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Wilmette, Ill.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Herbert Funeral Home.
