June 17, 2001ObituariesGLEN ARBOR - Theola Field Krull Hemphill, affectionately known as "Teddy," passed away on Sunday, June 3 at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor. With her trademark strength, courage and humor, Teddy battled cancer for over four years. Teddy's loving flock of family and friends dearly miss their warm and loving shepherd.Teddy was born Theola Pearl Field in Kansas City, Kansas in 1925. She received her education in the Hinsdale, Ill. schools, at the University of Illinois in Champaign, and at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. In 1947, Teddy married C. Philip Krull of Toledo, Ohio, and they spent 32 years at Glen Lake developing and operating Glen Craft Marina and Villas. To this marriage were born one daughter and three sons: Barret Philip Krull of Glen Arbor, Elizabeth R. Brien of Ann Arbor, Bradford Hargett Krull of Seattle, and Christian Philip Krull of Edinburg, Texas (currently relocating to Ann Arbor). Teddy's first husband, C. Philip Krull, predeceased her in 1977. Her parents, Harford and Mary Field, predeceased her in 1990 and 1991. In 1979, Teddy married Darrell L. Hemphill of Brownsville, Texas. During the summer months, she continued to operate Glen Craft Villas at Glen Lake. During the balance of the year in Brownsville she was active in the Brownsville Art League, the Central Christian Church, and the Rio Grande Valley Alzheimer's Chapter. Teddy is survived by her husband, Darrell L. Hemphill; one brother, Harford Field, Jr. of Mobile, Ala.; her four children; and 12 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Glen Lake Reformed Church near Glen Arbor. A memorial service was held on June 10, 2001, in Ann Arbor. An additional memorial service will be held on July 1, 2001, in Brownsville, Texas. Memorials may be made to the Arbor Hospice Residence, 2366 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48118 or the American Cancer Society. ELLSWORTH - LaVerna G. Burpee, 86, of Ellsworth and Grand Rapids, died at her home on Friday. She was born in Browerville, Minn., on Nov. 16, 1914. She attended the University of Minnesota, worked for the Defense Department during World War II, and then with her husband at Burpee & Co. in Grand Rapids. She loved traveling, gardening and summer picnics at the lake with her family. Surviving are her daughter, Ruth Ann (Thomas) Cooper of Ellsworth; her son, Thomas (Sally) Burpee of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Matthew (Aimee) Burpee, Michael (Elizabeth Kantzer) Cooper, Daniel (Leslie) Burpee, Andrew (Stephanie Reid) Cooper and Meghan Cooper; and her brother, Roy I. Bemis of Long Prairie, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil H. Burpee. There will be no visitation. Private services will be held. Interment will be in Grand Rapids. Arrangements were made by Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth. |
