LACONIA - Mabel H. Walter, 100, of 21 Taylor Home Drive, died on Tuesday at her home. She was a longtime resident of the Lakes Region, Varney Point and Taylor Community.
Born in Boston, Mass., on Aug. 12, 1900, she was the daughter of William and Carrie Thompson. She married Theodore F. "Ted" Walter on June 26, 1920.
"Grandma Mabel", as she was known, and her husband "Ted" enjoyed life to the fullest for the 68 years they were married. Their activities included sailing, camping, boating and skiing on both snow and water. They both water skied until their late 80s; "Grandma Mabel" used a slalom ski exclusively.
The Walters lived in North Quincy, Mass., from 1920-1963. Vacations were always spent on Lake Winnipesaukee, and from 1963 on, the Walters lived on that lake's shore at Varney Point.
Since 1988, when Mr. Walter died, Mrs. Walter lived in her own home in Laconia near the lake in the Taylor Community.
Besides being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Walter did and taught all sorts of art and handcrafts; her basic approach was "anything's possible". She used her sewing, knitting, crocheting and artistic skills to dress dolls of museum quality, including historical figures, nursery rhyme characters, famous personages and sports figures. Her dolls were exhibited regularly. She continued for many years to add to her collection of more than 60 dolls.
Among the places where her dolls were displayed was Mabel's Restaurant in Traverse City, which was originated and is owned by her granddaughter, Carol, and her husband, Greg Bright, and was named for Mrs. Walter.
A longtime Camp Fire Girls leader, Mrs. Walter was an executive in the organization in Massachusetts. She was also a leader and teacher of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church of Wollaston, Mass., for many years.
She was a charter member of the National Association of Social Workers, formed in 1955.
Mrs. Walter attended Gilford Community Church for many years.
She is survived by her son, Franklin of Copper Mountain, Colo.; daughters-in-law, Barbara of Amherst and Marilyn of Wayland, Mass.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; two sons, Theodore "Teddy" and Paul; and daughter-in-law, Elinor.
A memorial service will be held in four weeks.
