March 12, 2001ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Herbert A. Auer, 83, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday morning.He was born on Jan. 25, 1918 in Hammond, Ind., the only child of Edward and Margaret Auer. Herb graduated in 1940 from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, where he met Grace (Lundy) Auer. They were married on Dec. 22, 1941. Upon graduation, he was a teacher in the Muskegon School system. He joined the staff of the Muskegon Chronicle in 1942 and ultimately became the state editor. In 1954, he became director of the Continuing Education Publications Office at Michigan State University in East Lansing. He earned a master's degree in adult education from Michigan State University. He joined the staff of the Michigan State Medical Society in East Lansing in 1959, where he was the Managing Editor of the monthly journal "Michigan Medicine" and ultimately became the deputy director. He was the executive vice president of the Michigan Health Council from 1979 until he retired in 1984. Herb and Grace then moved to Traverse City and resided at 6273 Summit Court in Port of Old Mission before moving in 2000 to the Highlander, an assisted living center on Boardman Lake in Traverse City. He was President of the Muskegon Community Council, received the Muskegon Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, Man of the Year Award, was president of the Muskegon Chapter and the Michigan State Jaycees, director of the National Jaycees, president of the Michigan Parent Teacher Association, president of the Public Relations Association of Michigan, president of the Michigan College Public Relations Directors, elder of the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, served on the Traverse Area District Library Mileage Educational Effort Committee and was vice president of the Friends of Con Foster Museum. He is survived by his wife, Grace; his children, Arthur E of Traverse City, Margaret I. of Battle Creek, and Dr. Thomas C. of Traverse City; and nine grandchildren. Herb had made arrangements to donate his body to the Michigan State University School of Medicine for research. FERGUS FALLS, Minn. - Jane Marie Orcutt, 49, of Fergus Falls, Minn., died on Wednesday at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. Jane was born on April 23, 1951 in Washington, D.C., where she lived until 1960. In 1960, she moved with her family to Evanston, Ill. and then to Traverse City in 1970. While in Traverse City, she attended Grand Traverse Project and then in 1981 she moved to the Summerfield Group Home. In 1988, Jane moved to the Arlington Group Home in Fergus Falls, Minn., and attended Productive Alternatives, Inc. She enjoyed traveling, camping, music, her day programs and was loved by all who worked with her. Throughout her life, her spirit touched people's lives and she was a blessing to her family. She is survived by her mother, Feme Aldrich Orcutt of Bismarck, N.D.; her sister, Jan (Jim) Beck of Mandan, N.D.; one brother, John Orcutt (Mavis Flemmer) of Erhard, Minn.; a niece, Annie Beck, and one nephew, Andy Beck. A graveside committal service will be held at Circle Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg in the spring. Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. INTERLOCHEN - Rebecca "Becki" Kay Baden-Stachnik, 41, of Interlochen, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born on April 9, 1959 in South Haven, the daughter of Charles and Iona (Merrill) Smith. Becki married Patrick J. Stachnik on April 9, 1992 on Platte Lake in Beulah. Becki was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Beulah, and was a member of the Interlochen Eagles Club. She was a bus driver for Benzie Community Schools for four years. She enjoyed life and talking to everyone she met. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and children she drove. She is survived by her beloved husband, Pat; mother, Iona Smith of St. Louis, Mich.; grandmother, Edna Merrill of Benzonia; loving daughters, Cassandra Baden and Katelyn Stachnik, both of Interlochen; siblings, Tim (Kathy) Smith of Lansing, and Charles Smith and Gayle Smith, both of Thompsonville; a large family and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles, and sister, Michele. Friends may call at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes today (Monday) from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. from St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Terry Bard officiating. Inurnment will be in Joyfield Township Cemetery. VALERIE L. STEVENS BENAC WOODS HOOT, 52, of Mancelona, died Friday, March 9, 2001 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Wolverine Free Methodist Church in Wolverine. The family was served by Lintz Funeral Home of Indian River. NANNA PETOSKEY, 86, of Manistee, died the evening of Friday, March 9, 2001 in Manistee. She was born on July 25, 1914 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Visitation will take place today (Monday) from 6 to 9 p.m. at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, with an Evening Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Manistee.
