March 25, 2001ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Mary Ellen Smith, 74, of Traverse City, formerly of Troy, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center. Born March 8, 1927, in Romeo, she was the daughter of Harold and Vashti (Davis) Gray. Mary graduated from Romeo High School and was Valedictorian; graduated from the University of Michigan and was Vice President of her class; was a member of the sorority Chi Omega and very active in the U of M Alumni Association. She enjoyed golfing, playing cards and the piano. Mary is survived by her son, Steven Gray (Judy) Smith of Port Huron; brother, Jim (Libby) Gray of Boyne Falls; sister, Lois Gilfillan of New Jersey; two grandchildren, Stephanie (Alan) Morgan of Traverse City and Gretchen Smith of Port Huron; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Brianna, AJ, Charlotte, and Avery. She was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Stuart Martin Smith, who died March 17, 2001. Memorial services will be held at a later date down state. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to the University of Michigan Scholarship Fund, Ann Arbor, Michigan, or the charity of one's choice. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Susan Mary Randels, 55, of Traverse City, died on Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Formerly of Battle Creek, she had been a resident of Traverse City since 1975. Born Jan. 12, 1946, in Battle Creek, she was the daughter of Karl and Katherine (Redner) Randels. Susan was a 1964 graduate of Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, attended Heidelburg College in Tiffin, Ohio, and graduated from Michigan State University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. She worked for the State of Michigan in Disability Determination Service in Lansing from 1968 until 1975. In 1975 she moved to Traverse City to assist in opening the offices here, retiring in 1998. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Traverse City, where she served on the board and also served on the Social Concerns Committee. While attending school, Susan spent her summers as a camp counselor both in Battle Creek and at the Interlochen Music Camp. She enjoyed gardening, bridge and traveling. Susan also enjoyed animals, especially her dog "Sophie" and her many, many friends. She is survived by her mother, Kay Randels; brother, Bruce (Carol) Randels; nephews, Adam and Ben Randels; nephew, Ben Moen and niece, Kate Moen, all of Battle Creek. She was preceded in death by her father, Karl Randels in 1991 and sister, Sarah "Sally" Randels in 1993. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 6726 Center Road in Traverse City. Emmy Lou Belcher will officiate. Graveside services will be held at Memorial Cemetery in Battle Creek in the spring.
