Eugene J. Hansknecht
      "Hunch"
      Died May 26, 2001
     
      Eugene Joseph "Hunch" Hansknecht, 78, of Traverse City, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Birchwood Nursing Center. He was born March 17, 1923 in Grand Rapids, the son of Anthony and Laura (Magnum) Hansknecht.
      Mr. Hansknecht was a veteran, serving near the end of WW II with the U. S. Air Force, being stationed in Italy. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and also attended First Christian Church. A TV repairman for many years, he had also worked at Graham Electric for 17 years. Following his retirement he worked for Dick McCumbie, "The Coffee Man," cleaning and repairing coffee and popcorn machines and also volunteered his time repairing TVs at The Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. He enjoyed building model airplanes and for over 40 years was a glider pilot in Frankfort.
      He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors include his wife Jane, whom he married May 14, 1977 in Traverse City; his children, Kelli Marious of Fla., Donna Breithaupt and Debbie (Marshall) Grant, all of Traverse City, Kevin (Penny) Hansknecht of Ga., Sandy (Derrick) Barg of Interlochen, Kerry Hansknecht of Mt. Pleasant; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother and sisters Gerard and Lucille Hansknecht, both of Grand Rapids and Joan (Jerome) Karass of Comstock Park. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mary Louise Hansknecht and a sister Mary Ellen Jakobjack.
      The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. today at St. Francis Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. James Gardiner will be officiating. Inurnment will be in Memory Hill at First Christian Church.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Alzheimers Association. The family was served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
