November 3, 2001ObituariesFRANKFORT - Dolores M. Seres, 72, of Frankfort, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital.Dolores was born in Elberta on June 19, 1929, the daughter of Roscoe A. and Irene (Soderquist) Bramer. On Nov. 17, 1951, she married William Straubel, who preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1969. She then married Al Seres, who also preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 1991. Dolores had been a lifelong resident of the area. She was a former head teller at the State Savings Bank in Frankfort for 15 years. She then worked as an executive secretary for Incoe Corporation in Frankfort for 13 years. She was a trustee for the North Star Marina in Elberta. Dolores is survived by her son, Hal Straubel of Frankfort; a step-son, Donn Seres of Lake Orion; a step-daughter, Marcia Loureiro of Sterling Heights; five step-grandchildren; two sisters, Carolyn (Jack) Clement of Frankfort and Priscilla (Chuck) Shaffer of Grand Rapids; and several nieces and nephews. Dolores was devoted to her family. Friends may meet with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, from the Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort. Interment will follow in Crystal Lake Township Cemetery North. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider either The Maples Activities Fund or Benzie Home Health Care. Arrangements were made through the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - Thelma Willsey Black, a retired federal employee and a Grand Traverse native, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001. Thelma was born near Silver Lake on Dec. 2, 1912, the daughter of Claude and Edith (Eikey) Willsey. Both of her parents were also born in this area. Thelma received a bachelor's degree from Olivet College. Except for six years of federal employment in Washington and Detroit, Thelma lived in this area her entire life. Most of her federal employment was in Traverse City after she transferred from Detroit. She retired in 1974. Thelma was a member of the First Congregational Church in Traverse City. Thelma is survived by her daughter, Julie C. Black of Traverse City, two brothers, Kenneth (Joy) Willsey, and Francis William (Virginia) Willsey, both of Silver Lake; and a nephew, S. Michael Willsey and family. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the First Congregational Church in Traverse City. Dr. Gary Hogue will be officiating. Interment will be in the First Congregational Church Garden of Remembrance in Traverse City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the First Congregational Church Garden of Remembrance, or to the Cherryland Humane Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. GRAND RAPIDS - James A. O'Brien Jr., 78, died Thursday at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. Born March 21, 1923 in Charlevoix, he was the son of James A. and Mamie (Pratt) O'Brien Sr. On June 18, 1954 in Elk Rapids, he married the former Peggy McConnell who preceded him in death in 1993. Mr. O'Brien was a longtime resident of Traverse City and a longtime winter resident in San Benito, Texas. He had been employed as a truck driver for several trucking companies in the area. Mr. O'Brien served his country honorably with the United States Army during World War II, transporting troops, ammunition and supplies. He was a member of the VFW Cherryland Post 2780, the Elks Lodge in Harlingen, Texas, and the Eagles Aerie 383 in Traverse City. An avid Detroit Tigers fan and musician, Mr. O'Brien played the banjo and had performed with many groups. He also loved all animals and enjoyed boating. He is survived by his three daughters, Darlene (Robert) Wenner of Haslett, Judith (Dennis) Conant of Traverse City, and Debra (Scott) Jeffrey of Taylor; sister, Rose Waffle of Charlevoix; four grandchildren, Brian, Carol, Jennifer and Lindsey; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Alison; and many nieces and nephews. Along with his wife, Peggy, Mr. O'Brien was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ernest, Edward, and an infant, Albert. Visitation will be at the Reynolds- Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. David Gabel will be officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in Charlevoix. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society. TRAVERSE CITY - Vivian M. Link, 87, of Traverse City, formerly of California and a resident of northwest Michigan since 1993, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care. Vivian was born in Wautoma, Wis. on July 18, 1914, the daughter of Thomas and Tillie (Garthwaite) Risk. She was united in marriage to Ray. O. Link on Aug. 31, 1940, in Nebraska. Vivian graduated from the University of South Dakota with a bachelor's degree in education, and was a member of the Delta Delta sorority. She taught school in South Dakota for five years. Vivian moved to California with her husband in 1940. She became very involved in the community in Orange County, belonging to the Children's Hospital Guild and the Anaheim Memorial Hospital Guild, being a charter member. Vivian is survived by her daughter, Donna Ray (Alex) Knox of Beulah; her two sons, Stewart (Char) Link of Orange, Calif., and Roger (Carla) Link of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Francis (Char) Risk of Montana, and Stewart (Shirley) Risk of California. Vivian was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ray, on July 18, 1999; her parents; and two sisters, Ellen Peterson and Dorothy Klein. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, in Mt. Vernon, S.D. Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of your choice. MESICK - Artiss Lorraine Overla, 79, of Mesick, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Artiss was born in Grand Rapids on Aug. 29, 1922, the daughter of Roy and Lylian (Ruggles) Foster. On Jan. 28, 1940, she married Dale L. Overla, in Mesick. Artiss was employed by Frank Saul's Elevator, now John Deere, Inc. in Mesick, Ursula's Restaurant, and Stephans Drug Store, and BF Goodrich in Cadillac, and the United Telephone Company of Florida. Artiss was a member of the Rebekah Lodge #402 since 1948, and was a life member of the Amvets #120 of Mesick. She also belonged to the American Legion of Copemish. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mesick and assisted the church with secretarial duties in the mid 1980s. Artiss also tutored local residents with reading. Artiss is survived by four children, Jeffrey Wyn (Sandy) Overla of Manton, Jill Dalene (Dick) Abel of Sanford, Shelly Gay (Joseph) Dey of Mesick, and Derek Foster Overla of Mesick; her brother, Lee Foster of Bonita Springs, Fla.; her sister, Doris VanAtta of Ottawa, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Artiss was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Dale, on June 23, 1982; her brother, Robert Foster; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the United Methodist Church in Mesick. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, at the United Methodist Church in Mesick, with the Rev. Jack Conklin officiating. SPRING HILL, Fla. - Gary Lee Shupiery, 39, of Spring Hill, Fla., and formerly of Traverse City and North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001. Gary was born in Traverse City on Oct. 2, 1962, the son of Sam and Velma (Leatherman) Shupiery. On April 2, 1986, he married the former Rose Pankurst in Traverse City. Gary owned and operated a restaurant. He loved to fish and worked as a charter captain for a short period of time. Gary is survived by his wife, Rose, of Spring Hill, Fla.; his daughter, Renea of Spring Hill, Fla., and his son, Christopher of Tennessee; his mother, Velma Leatherman of Kingsley; his sister, Rose Mary (Dennis) DeFore of Lansing; his special aunt, Rita (Duane) Magee of Kingsley; his step father, George Mikowski of Traverse City; and many other relatives and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Sam Shupiery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home of Kingsley. TRAVERSE CITY - Donald "Don" Owen Stevens Jr., 73, of Traverse City, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center. Born Sept. 26, 1928 in Lansing, he was the son of Donald Owen Sr. and Lola M. (Fansler) Stevens. Don had been employed as an engineer for the Michigan and Alaskan Highway Department. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and served his country honorably with the United States Navy. Don was actively involved in the Senior Companion Program in Traverse City. He is survived by his sisters, Marian Campbell of Destin, Fla., and Norma Hilzinger of Jackson; and brothers, Phillip Stevens of Okemos, and Paul Stevens of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Don was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Sally Stevens. Private family services have been held. Arrangements were handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Helen T. Witkowski, 79, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born April 14, 1922, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Paul and Katherine (Kowalik) Hodorek. On Dec. 31, 1944, in Detroit, she married George Witkowski, who survives. Helen was formerly of Detroit and a resident of the Traverse City area since 1989. She was a graduate of Cass High School in Detroit and later attended Detroit Business College. Helen had been employed as paymaster for Commercial Steel Treating in Detroit, and also in the payroll department of Whittman & Barnes Co. in Plymouth. She was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Plymouth and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City. Helen enjoyed doing needlework. Along with her husband George, she is survived by her son, George Witkowski II of Traverse City; daughter-in-law, Roxanne Vanderveer of Traverse City; sisters, Sophie (Napoleon) Ayotte of Plymouth, Eleanor Hancock of Ann Arbor, Genevieve Bigos of Romulus, Dorothy (Frank) Long of Ocoee, Fla.; brother, Steven (Irene) Hodorek of Livonia; sister-in-law, Betty Hodorek of St. Clair Shores; and many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Leonard Hodorek. Cremation has taken place. Friends may call at the time of a Memorial Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Plymouth on Friday, Nov. 9 at 10:30 a.m., where a wake will immediately follow. RUBY KAULAY JAMES, 75, of Peshawbestown, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Northport Long Term Care. Visitation will commence with a wake service at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Visitation will continue from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, at Wolfe Funeral Home. Interment will be in Oliver Township Cemetery. MIDLAND - Robert Lind, 84, former Midland resident for 60 years, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at the home of his daughter in Lansing. Bob was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Jan. 30, 1917, the son of the late Frederick A. and Margaret E. (Montgomery) Lind. He attended Colorado College and Stanford University. Bob married the former Vesta Montague in Caro on Oct. 30, 1942. Vesta preceded Bob in death on Jan. 3, 2000. Bob worked for the Dow Chemical Company from 1940 until his retirement in 1978. During his time with Dow, he was a chemist, lab supervisor, purchasing agent and senior systems analyst. Bob was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, a member of the Midland Lions Club and was a past president of the Lions Club. He also sang with the Men of Music, the Dow Male Chorus and Blast from the Past. He enjoyed golf, fishing, friends, good times at the Midland Country Club and activities at the Midland Community Center. Bob will be missed by his children, Eric R. (Virginia) Lind of Suttons Bay and Susan (Robert) Mott of Lansing; grandson, Dean MacDonald of Lansing; and many special friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, from the Memorial Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Wallace H. Mayton III officiating. Private graveside committal rites will be in Midland Cemetery. Mr. Lind's family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services on Monday.
