Obituaries

RHODA R. BOLTON, 93, of Traverse City, passed away Tuesday evening, Nov. 6, 2001, at home with her family.
      Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home is serving the family. A full obituary will appear at a later date.
     
      OAKLEY FOREST DEEREN, 79, of Traverse City, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at his residence.
      Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Neil J. Mowat officiating. Burial will be in the Inland Township Cemetery.
     
      EDWIN J. PARKER, 89, of Traverse City, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at Tendercare.
      Visitation will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A Masonic Candlelight Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. this evening, conducted by the Traverse City Lodge 222 of F & AM.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Ron Sinclair officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
     
      ROBERT F. POWERS, M.D., 82, of Manistee, and formerly of Saginaw, passed away on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at the First Congregational UCC Church in Manistee.
      Arrangements are being handled by Johnson Funeral Home, P.C., Manistee.
     
      INTERLOCHEN - Catherine R. (Watrous) Sackett, age 54, of Interlochen, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Munson Medical Center.
      Cathy was born Aug. 18, 1947, in a log cabin beside Cold Creek in Custer Township, Antrim County, the daughter of Clifford R. Watrous and Joyce M. (Finch) MacDonald (deceased).
      Cathy moved to Traverse City in 1967 after graduating from Bellaire High School. She worked at Terrace Beach Motel, R.L. Polk and Four Seasons Best Western Motel. She volunteered at the Women's Resource Center for a couple of years, was a Neighborhood Watch block captain and maintained a licensed day care home on Boyd Street, where she lived for nine years. She later became involved with the Blair Youth and Family Forum in Blair Township, where she resided for the last seven years.
      Cathy is survived by her father, Clifford R. Watrous of Bellaire; her children, daughters, Tammy Sirena Williams of Carthage, Tenn., Lara Marie Putnam of Shoreline, Wash., Chandra Sackett of Honor, and son, Shea Sackett, also of Honor.
      Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 630 W. Silver Lake Rd.
      In lieu of flowers, Catherine requested that memorial contributions be made to the Outpatient Chemotherapy Clinic at Munson Medical Center.
     
      FARMINGTON HILLS - John H. Comai, of Farmington Hills, formerly of Traverse City, died on Monday, Oct. 29, 2001.
      He was born on Dec. 15, 1924, in Dearborn, the son of Stanley and Anne (Sheko) Comai. On Feb. 1, 1945, in Detroit, he married Hellen M. Comai.
      John lived in Traverse City for three years, until Hellen passed away in 1998. He then relocated to the Plymouth/Farmington Hills area to be near his family. He was accomplished in a variety of trades including, welding, building, masonry and several self-employed businesses. John enjoyed fishing, reading and movies.
      John will be remembered for his cheerful positive attitude. He enjoyed people, and made friends wherever he traveled. Despite his medical condition, he was still caring and worrying about others.
      His family was so important to him, and he truly loved his children and grandchildren. They were sure to put that familiar twinkle in his eye. John was a special father and grandfather. We sure will miss his smiles, laughter, stories and love. John was a loving husband. He is now with the one he loved and missed so much, his dear wife, Hellen.
      He is survived by his three sons, Berry, Tim (Jeanne) and Doug (Diane); two daughters, Susanne (Richard) Sanford and Theresa (Jim) Schneider; seven grandchildren, Rick (Jennifer) Sanford, Lorena (Andy) Bernd, Christina and Nick Comai, Sheri Schneider, and Ben and Kaylee Comai; one great-granddaughter, Summer Sanford; one sister, Shirley Salazar; and one brother, Richard Comai.
      He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Hellen; one brother, Howard; two sisters, Lorretta Nagy and Dolly McCallum; and his parents.
      Funeral services and burial were held at the Cherry Hill United Methodist Church in Canton, with Rev. Larry Wik officiating.
     
      FREDERIC - Shirley A. Chichester, 71, died at her home on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Mrs. Chichester was born in Marshall on August 4, 1930, to Frank and Evangeline (Gilbert) Jelinek.
      She married Ken Chichester on Sept. 2, 1950, in Marshall. She worked at Eaton Corporation in Marshall and in the Continuing Education Department at Michigan State, but spent most of her time as a homemaker and loving mom and grandmother. She and her husband, Ken, lived in Jackson, Temperance, Marshall and Adrian prior to their retirement move to Frederic in 1987. She loved reading, baking, and was a master at knitting, and loved viewing nature from her river room on the AuSable River. She and her husband spent 13 winters in Arizona, where her snowbird friends affectionately knew her as "The Cookie Lady."
      She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Evangeline Jelinek; and her brother, Richard Jelinek.
      She is survived by her husband, Ken; two sons, Denny (Cyndi) Chichester of Jackson and Doug (Pam) Chichester of Williamsburg.
      She leaves behind three grandchildren, Alan, Lindsey and Mark Chichester; a sister, Marilyn Rathburn of Athens; and a brother, Frank Jelinek Jr. of Marshall.
      A private family memorial service was held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations go to a memorial fund at the Frederic Township Library.
      Funeral arrangements were handled by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, Grayling.
     
      MISSION, Texas - Erwin T. Carlisle, 90, passed away on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen, Texas.
      Erwin was a retired farmer and school custodian. He was especially fond of gardening. Erwin was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 40 years. He was a past Master of East Bay Lodge #264, F. & A.M. in Acme, and was currently a member of the Elk Rapids Lodge #275, F. & A.M. Erwin was also a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and had served three times as Worthy Patron of the East Bay Chapter #524, O.E.S., in Acme. He was currently a member of the Elk Rapids Chapter #326, O.E.S.
      Erwin is survived by his wife, Evelyn M. Carlisle of Mission, Texas; one son, Kenneth E. Carlisle of Bradley, and one daughter, Mary Jane Carlisle of Mission, Texas; one grandson, John M. Carlisle of San Diego, Calif., and one granddaughter, Heather M. Pawloski of Grand Rapids; and two great-granddaughters, Janie W. Carlisle of San Diego, Calif., and Lyric B. Pawloski of Grand Rapids.
      There will be no local services. Burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date.
      Kreidler Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
