Obituaries

ELK RAPIDS - Elmer A. Gnadt, 95, of Elk Rapids, passed away on Friday, Nov. 16, 2001.
      Elmer was born in Detroit on Sept. 21, 1906, to Frederick W. and Emma (Noffke) Gnadt. Elmer married Barbara Soellner in Detroit on May 19, 1933.
      Together, Elmer and Barbara moved to Elk Rapids in 1940. Elmer and Barbara owned the largest farm within the village limits of Elk Rapids. The farm was known as Rivershore Farm. They had been married for 38 years when Barbara passed away on Sept. 4, 1971.
      Elmer served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed at Camp Croft in South Carolina; Camp Rucker in Alabama; and Fort Meade in Maryland.
      On April 15, 1975, Elmer married Iola Lee. Elmer was a life member of Schiller Lodge in Detroit. He was Master in 1936. He also belonged to the Masonic Lodge of Elk Rapids. Elmer belonged to the Elk Rapids Fire Department for 34 years. He also served on the Elk Rapids Village Council.
      Elmer was employed by the Chain O' Lakes Marina, E & B Gulf Service, the Elk Rapids Co-op, and the Elk Rapids Tire Factory. Elmer also ran a small engine repair business on East Third Street in Elk Rapids. He was also employed by the Edgewater Casino in Laughlin, Nev. Elmer lived in Bullhead, Ariz., for twenty years.
      Elmer was an avid fisherman.
      Elmer is survived by his wife, Iola of Bellaire; his daughter, Joann (Guy) Avery of Traverse City; his son, Fred "Butch" (Cupie) Gnadt of Elk Rapids; four step-sons, Andy (Cynthia) Omans of Waterford, Jeff Omans of Waterford, Brad Omans of California and Mark Omans of Waterford; five grandchildren, Kerry Beshears, Kreg Avery, David (Tina) Gnadt, Heidi (Andy) Sleder and Kevin (Emily) Gnadt; several step-grandchildren; three great-granddaughters, Christina (Norman) Beshears, Barbara Avery and Ashley Gnadt; one great-grandson, Justin Gnadt; and one great-great-granddaughter, Alexis.
      Elmer was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Gnadt; two sisters, Florence Hawley and Mildred Cox; and step-son, Tom Omans.
      Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, with Andy Omans officiating, at the funeral home. A Masonic service will follow the services under the auspices of the Elk Rapids Masonic Lodge. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.
      In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Kitchen Cupboard food pantry in Elk Rapids or to the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      SUTTONS BAY - Mary K. Strang, 95, of Suttons Bay, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Wind Song Adult Foster Care in Leland.
      Mary was born in Gills Pier on Sept. 10, 1906, the daughter of Joseph and Ella (Kroupa) Kirt. Mary married Boniface "Bonnie" J. Strang on Nov. 3, 1937 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Suttons Bay.
      Mary was a member of St. Michaels and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Churches. She enjoyed gardening and visiting with her many friends.
      Mary is survived by three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
      Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, "Bonnie" in 1991; her son, Kenneth; two sisters, Molly Kolarik and Jennie Kolarik; and her brother, Joseph.
      Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.
      A Catholic Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, with the Rev. Joseph Greenwell as celebrant, at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Interment will be in the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Mass Intentions, or to the Suttons Bay-Bingham Fire and Rescue Squad.
     
      ANN BARRETT, 84, of Mancelona, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
      No services are scheduled at this time. The family was served by the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona.
     
      MARIANNE RAVENSCRAFT, age 78, of Traverse City, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Mrs. Ravenscraft's obituary and service times will be in a later edition of the Record-Eagle.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
