November 22, 2001ObituariesBALDWIN - Jack Hilliker, 80, of Baldwin died Sunday, Nov. 18, at his home. Born July 18, 1921 in Traverse City, he was the son of William J. and Ilo (Mitchell) Hilliker. In 1943 he married the former Judith Wales, who survives. As a child, Jack traveled with his parents all over the United States, as his father was a newspaper reporter. In 1942, he graduated from Traverse City High School. Jack then served his country honorably in the United States Army for four years and seven months. While in the service, he was in the military police and a heavy equipment operator in the Aleutian Islands. Jack later worked for Quality Cleaners in Suttons Bay for 25 years. Being very interested in government, Jack was with the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department for nine years, supervisor and assessor at Long Lake Township for a few years, and later was assessor for Elmwood Township. In 1989, together with his wife, Judith, they moved to Baldwin on Orchard Lake, as he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Jack was an active member of the Traverse City Friends Church and the First Christian Church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #222 of Traverse City for over 50 years and was Master in 1988. Other survivors include his daughter, Jarra L. Hilliker of Fruitport; and many nieces, nephews and special friends. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held in the spring of 2002. Arrangements will be announced at a later date. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to the Masonic Lodge #222 of Traverse City. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Wilfred "Bill" M. Fish, 87, of Traverse City, passed away on Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Munson Medical Center. Bill was born in Marquette on Nov. 7, 1914, the son of the late Wilfred and Mary (Morin) Fish. On Aug. 6, 1940, he married the former Blanche Komrska of Karlin, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City. They had celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this year. Bill was a teacher in secondary education. During his career, he taught in Honor, Copemish, Bellaire, Warren and Marquette. He also taught in Biloxi, Miss. While he was known as a strict teacher, his kindness and patience were appreciated by students and parents. Bill and Blanche also owned and operated Karlin Grocery for many years. They had lived in Karlin until moving to Traverse City five years ago. Bill enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and woodworking. To his family he will be remembered as a faithful, fun-loving and helpful person. Bill is survived by his wife, Blanche Fish of Traverse City; and his sister, Sister Rita Ann Fish of Manitowoc, Wis. Bill was preceded in death by his patents; an infant daughter; and one brother, Edward Fish. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. on Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. William Lipscomb as celebrant. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice, Mass Intentions, or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. EAST LELAND - Vernon James Bardenhagen, 79, of East Leland, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at his home. Vern was born on his Suttons Bay farm on Nov. 3, 1922, the son of Elmer and Emma (Wakulat) Bardenhagen. He married the former Ruth Lorraine Scheck on May 26, 1943, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland. Vernon Bardenhagen was a kind, loving and patient father and husband, who treasured his 58 years of marriage with his wife Ruth. Together they enjoyed over 25 years of wintering in Florida. He valued time with his family and friends at their Upper Peninsula cabin that the family built and shared. Vern was a man who loved life in every sense. He enjoyed socializing with everyone he met at work or at leisure. Friends of his children were always friends of his, too. He was a lifelong farmer and grew potatoes, cherries, strawberries, cauliflower and broccoli. His family spent many hours working the farm together and he proudly taught his children the meaning of work. He had a sincere love for trucking and hauled his produce and the crops of his neighbors to various markets and local processors. He supplied retail stores in Leelanau County, Traverse City and Grand Rapids with potatoes for over 30 years. In recent years, he delivered chemicals for Wilbur Ellis. Vern was a member of the Farm Bureau and several cherry industry committees. He also served on the Leland School Board. Vern was a great euchre player and enjoyed many a rainy day with friends around the kitchen table playing euchre, cribbage and bridge. In his younger years, he was an avid bowler, and later took up golf and enjoyed the game with family and friends on many courses here, in the Upper Peninsula and in Florida. He was involved with the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church all his life and served as an usher, an elder and on various church committees. Vern is survived by his wife, Ruth; his children, James V. (Janeen Meyers) Bardenhagen, Gary A. (Christi Bremer) Bardenhagen, Robert E. (Bonnie Severence) Bardenhagen, John A. Bardenhagen, Peter A. (Karen Moe) Bardenhagen and Judith A. (Bill) Livingston; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brother, Victor Bardenhagen of Varnsville, S.C.; his sister, Jane Schwarz of Leland; and 21 nieces and nephews. Vern was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Leonard Bardenhagen; his sister, Lucille (Peterson) Bach, and his daughter, Susan Jane Bardenhagen. A celebration of Vern's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Good Harbor, with the Rev. Lawrence Matro officiating. A private family graveside service will take place in the East Leland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, or to Munson Hospice. Arrangements are being handled by Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. HELMI S. GEBHARDT, 92, longtime Midland resident, passed away on Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, 2001, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City. A graveside committal service will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, in the Midland City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Arrangements have been handled by the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler St., Midland, MI 48640; (877) 631-2292. CLARA L. GILLE, age 93, of Traverse City and formerly of St. Clair, passed away on Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, 2001, at her daughter's home. Arrangements are pending with the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. ESTELLE V. KRUSNIAK, 95, of Manistee, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of the procession to the church on Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Herbert Funeral Home. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manistee. Arrangements are being handled by the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. JOAN WALKER, age 78, of Bear Lake, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home of Bear Lake is in charge of arrangements. TRAVERSE CITY - Carol Jean White, 59, formerly of Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday at Munson Medical Center. Born June 26, 1942 in Grand Rapids, she was the daughter of Leonard Sr. and Helena (Sinke) Snoek. On May 20, 1967, in Grand Rapids, she married Terrell "Terry" White, who survives. Carol had been employed by the Traverse City Area Public Schools as a bus driver and for the past several years assisted driving the special education children. She was an active member of The Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and representative of the Synod of the Covenant. Carol enjoyed sewing, gardening, singing in the church choir, and especially spending time with her daughter and granddaughter. God's heavenly choir will be forever blessed with a gifted soprano. She will be fondly remembered for always willing to help anyone in need, and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Along with her beloved husband, Carol is also survived by her daughter, Kimberly (Westberg) Dittmar of Kingsley; sister, Marion (David) Peterson of Lansing; brothers, John (Ruth) Snoek, Leonard (Marcia) Snoek Jr., and Dennis (Rose) Snoek, all of Grand Rapids; granddaughter, Rebecca Maxine Dittmar of Kingsley; sisters-in-law, Donna Snoek of Holland, and Debra White of Grand Rapids; brothers-in-law, David VanderMeulen of Arizona, Douglas White of Monterey, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Paul Snoek and Matthew Snoek; sister, Betty VanderMeulen; and mother-in-law, Maxine White. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. A memorial service will be held at The Presbyterian Church on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye officiating. Internment will be in The Presbyterian Church's Prayer Garden. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to The Presbyterian Church Choir. |
