November 26, 2001ObituariesNORTHPORT - Edith Elvera Farber, 81, of Northport, died on Saturday at the Leelanau Memorial Health Center.Edith was born on Aug. 21, 1920, in Northport, the daughter of Robyn and Elvera (Anderson) Rogers. On June 27, 1947, she married Lyle Farber. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Church in Northport. What Edith enjoyed most was being able to spend time with her many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her husband, Lyle; her son, Jack Allen Farber; two sisters, Iva Stowe and Rosalie Petersen; one brother, Wyman J. Rogers; and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys, Audrey and Ellen Mae; and one brother, Bud. A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Church in Northport, with the Rev. Joseph Ripley officiating. Burial will be in the Leelanau Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to donor's choice. Arrangements are being handled by the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. SUTTONS BAY - Walter Joseph Kalchik, 66, of Suttons Bay, passed away on Saturday at his home. Walt was born in Suttons Bay on May 18, 1935, the son of Louis L. and Helen (Nemeskal) Kalchik. In 1960 he married Donna Weimer in Traverse City. Walt was the president of Kalchik's Disposal Service in Suttons Bay. He was a member of the Leelanau Township Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and was active in the Northport Sportsman's Club, where he served as treasurer. Walt enjoyed the outdoors, and especially fishing and hunting. Walt served his country overseas in West Germany in the U.S. Army. Walt is survived by his wife of 41 years, Donna of Suttons Bay; his three children, Rebecca (Terry) Warner, Guy Kalchik and David Kalchik; four sisters, Delores (Raymond) Riggle, Jean Kalchik, Cynthia (Richard) Gilliand and Georgia (Jon) Allen; three brothers, Victor (Shirley) Kalchik, Francis (Carol) Kalchik and Albion (Dianne) Kalchik; and two grandsons, Michael Gene and Joshua Walter Warner. Walt was preceded in death by his brother, Harold; and his son, Andrew. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Trinity Church in Northport, with the Rev. Joseph Ripley officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena. KARLIN - Walter "Wally" E. Albrecht, 75, of Karlin, died on Saturday. He was born on Dec. 7, 1925, in Lyons, Ill., the son of Walter J. and Lillian (Sembra) Albrecht. In 1962 in Chicago, Ill., he married the former Arlene Taylor. Wally worked for Interlochen Schools as a custodian in the late '60s. He was also a self-employed excavator, retiring in 1987. Wally was a member of the Traverse City Masonic Lodge, Interlochen V.F.W., served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany and Japan, in the motor pool. He is survived by his wife, Arlene of Karlin; one son, "Butch" Albrecht of Karlin (Walter R.); two brothers, Darrell (Joyce) Albrecht of Karlin; and two sisters, Jeannie Pavlis of Cicero, Ill. and Lillian (Pete) Holt of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Albrecht of Karlin; and one sister, Violet Totten of Karlin. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bruce Craner officiating. Interment will be in the Grant Township Cemetery. Arrangements will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. GEORGE S. GAJESKI, 83, of Free Soil, died on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at his home in Free Soil. He was born on Jan. 13, 1918, in Free Soil. Visitation will be held tonight from 7 to 9 p.m., and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Mass from The Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Free Soil. Following the funeral mass, burial will be in the St. John Cantius Church Cemetery. MARY ANNE OSTON, 89, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. TRAVERSE CITY - Glenn Ward Follett, 88, of Traverse City, passed away Saturday at Grand Traverse Pavilions with his family at his side. He was born July 6, 1913, in St. Ignace, the son of Dwight and Hattie (Glendenning) Follett and had lived in Traverse City since 1946. Glenn served his country with the U.S. Army in New Guinea during World War II and was awarded the Silver Star for bravery. After the service, he went to work for Burwood Industries where he was employed for 29 years as plant superintendent. He retired in 1974 at the age of 61 as he wanted to enjoy his retirement while he was young enough to enjoy it. Glenn's spring and summer hobbies included raising beautiful flowers (especially roses), a great vegetable garden, raspberries and a beautiful lawn. In the winter, Glenn enjoyed keeping his and his neighbor's driveways cleaned out with his snowblower. He never charged his neighbors for this. Glenn enjoyed traveling and his hobbies which included building birdhouses, bird feeders, doll houses for his granddaughters, bookcases, etc. for his family and friends as gifts. Glenn was always there to help a friend or family member in need. His philosophy was to "always treat people like you would like to be treated - and be honest." Glenn is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Beatrice May Rattray, whom he married October 8, 1945 at First Congregational Church in Traverse City. Also surviving are his children, Jack W. (Nancy) Follett and Betty L. (Dave) Dell, all of Traverse City; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his great-granddaughter, Julie Ann in 1968. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the Follett family's long time friend Richard McWatters officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Clearwater Cemetery in Rapid City. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Grand Traverse Pavilions Upper Elm Unit. TRAVERSE CITY - Herman W. Bufe, 100, of Traverse City, died peacefully Saturday at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Herman was born July 29, 1901, in Chicago, Ill., the son of William and Lucy Bufe. Herman had been a cake decorator in bakeries and was also a stationary engineer, which is a person who attended boilers and generators in high rise buildings. Herman was a member of the F & AM Lodge 222 in Traverse City and recently received his 75 year membership award and pin. He also was member of the Shrine, being associated with the Medina Temple in Chicago. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Jeanne Bufe of Traverse City; four grandchildren, Robert M. "Mike" Bufe of Gaylord, Kathy Bartlett of Gouldsboro, Maine, Pam Neuman of Huffman, Texas and Mellissa VanAlstine of Kingwood, Texas. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Lauren Bufe, Corey and Caitlyn Neuman, and Tessa and Noah VanAlstine; his sister, Helen Carlson of Florida and several nieces and nephews. Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Mae in 1985; by his parents and by his siblings, Margarite Fikes, Mary Larson, Bertha Chars and Ann Hanson. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. At 3:30 p.m. a service of remembrance will take place with the Rev. Dr. David Gabel officiating. Visitation will resume at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening and at 7:30 p.m., a Masonic Candlelight Service will be held under the auspices of Masonic Lodge #222. GRANT TOWNSHIP - Dorothy Mae Pavlis, 87, of Grant Township, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in Traverse City. She was born Dorothy Mae Kroupa on Sept. 11, 1914, in Leelanau County, the daughter of Frank and Carrie (Tremain) Kroupa. She was a graduate of Traverse City High School, class of 1932. Dorothy worked at Kresge in Traverse City from 1938 to 1942. On Jan. 16, 1943, she married Elmer A. Pavlis of Grant Township. She and Elmer were livestock farmers. In 1957 she began working at the National Music Camp and retired from Interlochen Arts Academy in 1975. Dorothy loved visiting with family and friends, traveling, making greeting cards, genealogy and was active for many years as a 4-H leader. She and her husband owned and operated the Ole Farm Museum in Grant Township. She was a member of the Grant Ladies Club, the United Methodist Women and attended Grant United Methodist Church. She was also noted for specialty baked goods, especially kolaches and tea-rings. Dorothy will be sadly missed by family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Elmer; a daughter, Jeanie and husband, Mike English of Grant Township; a sister, Helen (Kroupa) Bugai of Leelanau County; a brother, Robert Kroupa; three grandchildren, Sarah Steinbauer of Pittsburgh, and Matthew and David Steinbauer of Decatur, Ill.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Amos, Walter, Albert and Frank; her sister, Clara; her son, James; and daughter, Vivian (Pavlis) Steinbauer. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at the Grant United Methodist Church, corner of Karlin and Zue Roads in Buckley. Friends may call at the church at the time of the service or one hour prior. A meal will follow. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy asked that people do something nice for someone else or take themselves out for a nice dinner. Mania Died November 23, 2001 TRAVERSE CITY - On Friday evening, we said our last goodbye to our wife, our mom and our grandma. Born in Las Cruees, N.M., Daisy Elizabeth touched many lives. Through the course of her life she was loved by the people close to her. More importantly, she loved those people and gave much of herself to everyone. She was at her best when any of us was sad or sick or struggling or happy or curious. Her memory will be kept alive by her husband, Jim; her children, Bill, Susan, Kathleen, Marcia, Jan and Dave; her grandchildren; her brothers and sisters; and everyone else in her family. Each of these people will miss her very much, but all of them are happy to have been touched by her life. Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. There will also be a rosary said at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral mass will be offered at Immaculate Conception Church on Tuesday morning. Goodbye and rest well. |
