Dorothy Mildred Glenn
      Died November 26, 2001
      GRAWN - Dorothy Mildred Glenn, age 78, of Grawn, formerly of Detroit, died Monday at the home of her daughter.
      Born Aug. 7, 1923 in Clarksville, Tenn., she was the daughter of James A. and Clara (Proctor) Cunningham.
      Mildred attended the Bayview Wesleyan Church and enjoyed yardwork and especially loved her flowers.
      She is survived by her daughters, Dillie (Joseph) Zilafro of Saranac, Margaret C. (Robert) Lindley of Grawn; son, George "Bob" R. Glenn of Traverse City; sister, Barbara Jean Norris of Ferndale; brother, Charles Edward (Lillian) Cunningham of Redford; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
      Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Vester Glenn; her parents; brothers, William Russell Cunningham and Leon Donald Cunningham; and sister, Margaret Virginia Piesco.
      Visitation will be at the Reynolds- Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Thursday from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
      Funeral services will be at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jack Steenbergh officiating. Burial will be in Grand Lawn Cemetery in Detroit on Saturday at 11 a.m.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Bayview Wesleyan Church in Traverse City.
      EILEEN M. HIPPLE, 85, of Traverse City, passed away on Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at her home.
      Service arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      EARL "JAKE" JACOBS, 79, of Traverse City, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at his home.
      Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      ANNA C. PELIKAN, 95, of Bear Lake, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at The Maples in Frankfort.
      Funeral services will be held in Berwyn, Ill. at the J. Linhart and Sons Funeral Home.
      Local arrangements were provided by the Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home in Bear Lake.
     
      DORIS MAY PETTENGILL, 73, of Interlochen, passed away at her home on Monday, Nov. 26, 2001.
      Arrangements are pending at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      Dorothy "Dottie" E. Thomas
      Died November 10, 2001
      MARGATE, Fla. - Dorothy "Dottie" E. Thomas of Margate, Fla., and formerly of Traverse City, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, in Margate, Fla.
      Dottie was born in Kalamazoo on Jan. 29, 1930, the daughter of Ralph and Beatrice (Blank) Homan. On Dec. 9, 1950, she married William R. Thomas.
      Dottie attended Michigan State University. Primarily a homemaker, Dottie was a community volunteer, and was involved in the Munson Hospital's auxiliary. She was also a member of the Republican Party of Grand Traverse County. Dottie and Bill owned and operated Bill Thomas's Restaurant on Park Street from 1955 to 1980, at which time they moved to Florida.
      Dottie is survived by her children, Patricia A. (Thomas) Dowker of Ann Arbor, Scott W. Thomas of Charlottesville, Va., and Randell W. Thomas of Margate, Fla.; three grandchildren, Stephen R. Dowker of Ann Arbor, and Douglas and Brittany Thomas of Charlottesville, Va.
      Dottie was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Bill, in May, 1989; her father, Ralph, in Feb. 1964, and her mother Beatrice in May of 1989.
      Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service on Dec. 1, 2001 in Florida. A memorial service is planned for Traverse City in the summer of 2002, and will be announced at that time.
      Mary Ellen Brown
      Died November 26, 2001
      TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Ellen Brown, 62, of Traverse City, died Monday at Munson Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
      Born June 8, 1939 in Woburn, Mass., she was the daughter of Leo Francis and Eileen (Mahoney) Carton. On Sept. 13, 1969 in Woburn, Mass., she married G. Patrick Brown who survives.
      A longtime employee of the Traverse Area Public Schools, Maryellen most recently worked as a teachers aid at Traverse Heights Elementary School. Together with her husband, Pat, they owned and operated The Upper Crust Pizza Shop on West Front Street for a number of years. Her family, faculty members, and students were very important to her and she cherished their friendships.
      Maryellen enjoyed gardening.
      Also surviving are her children, Maureen Lynn Brown of Chicago, Daniel Carton Brown of Washington, D.C.; a very close cousin, Marie Mahoney; one niece and one nephew.
      She was preceded in death by her parents.
      Cremation has taken place.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
      A memorial Mass will take place at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Father James Hayden serving as celebrant.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Maryellen Fund, for the needs of the students, in care of Traverse Heights Elementary School, 933 Rose Street, Traverse City, MI 49686.

      Charlene A. VanKersen
      Died November 25, 2001
      TRAVERSE CITY - Charlene A. VanKersen, 67, of Traverse City, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center.
      She was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of William and Geneva (Hamilton) Vos and married George A. VanKersen Jr. on July 1, 1962, in Kalamazoo.
      Charlene, a resident of Traverse City since 1971, was employed as the personal secretary to Louis A. Smith of the law firm of Smith and Johnson for the past 26 years. She enjoyed her dogs, Tracy, Alex and Chrissy and her many friends at Peegeo's Restaurant.
      Charlene is survived by her sons, Garth (Patricia) VanKersen of Traverse City, George (Susan) VanKersen of Traverse City and Todd (Laura) VanKersen of Galesburg; her grandchildren, Jeremy, George, Megan, Todd and Jennifer VanKersen, Chris and Benjamin Guertin, and Larry, Casey and Cory Tutt; brother, Duane "Jock" (Marjorie) Vos of Kalamazoo; her sister, Jean McDaniel of Kalamazoo; a brother-in-law and sister-in- law, Don and Jenny VanKersen of Scotts; and many nieces.
      Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; and by her husband, George.
      Visitation will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery following cremation.

      Died November 27, 2001
      TRAVERSE CITY - Irene Middaugh Duell West, 87, of Traverse City, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Birchwood Nursing Center, surrounded by all of her loving children.
      Irene was born in Wexford County on Jan. 28, 1914, the daughter of Frank and Flossie (Connine) Middaugh. She was a lifelong resident of this area. On Oct. 30, 1931, she married Ivan Duell in Traverse City. Ivan preceded her in death in 1952. Irene married Paul West on Feb. 3, 1953, in Traverse City. Paul preceded her in death in 1974.
      Irene worked for several years at Burwoods, VanEnenaam Hardware and Northwestern Michigan College. Irene and her second husband, Paul, owned and operated Dell's Tavern in Traverse City.
      Irene was a member of the Eagles and the Traverse City Senior Center. She enjoyed dancing, gardening, hunting, and especially fishing and camping at her son's lake lot. She also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
      Irene is survived by six children, Fred (Lorene) Duell of Kingsley, Flossie (Carl) Bauer of Kingsley, Raymond (Rosie) Duell of Traverse City, Joyce Kroupa of Traverse City, Josie (Gene) Swainston of Traverse City, and Rosellia (Harmon) Wooley of Kingsley; her stepdaughter, Caroline Bronson; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Viola Kellogg of Buckley; her brother, Donald (Goldie) Middaugh of Buckley; and many nieces and nephews.
      Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Ivan and Paul; her two brothers, Ken and Vernon Middaugh; her sister, Thelma Olszewski; and her son-in-law, Dewaine Kroupa.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
      A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Char Minger officiating. Interment will follow in Cornell Cemetery in Buckley.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Traverse City Commission on Aging, or a charity of one's choice.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
      Edward J. Popa
      Died November 26, 2001
      CEDAR - Edward J. Popa, 87, of Cedar, formerly of Ferndale, died Monday at the French Manor.
      He was born in Cedar on Jan. 22, 1914, and was the son of Frank and Anna (Flis) Popa. On Aug. 29, 1942, he married the former Irene Eldridge who preceded him in death.
      Edward left the area when he was 17 years old and returned in 1979 after working for Uniroyal in Detroit for 40 years. He also lived in Three Rivers and Florida for a short time. He was a member of the Eagles Club of Traverse City.
      Edward is survived by his sons, James O. Popa of Colorado, Michael Popa of Macomb; his daughters, Constance Retheford of Rochester Hills, and Lynn Francis of Maryland; his sister, Sophia Popa of Sterling Heights; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
      Along with his wife, Irene, he was preceded in death by his son Thomas M.; his parents; his sister, Anna Popa; and his brothers, Joseph and Stephen.
      A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Isadore where friends may call at the time of the service. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Isadore.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Manor.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Terrence "Terry" William Adams
      Died November 21, 2001
      NORWALK, Calif. - Terrence "Terry" William Adams passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at Baker Hospital in Norwalk, Calif.
      Terry was born Sept. 17, 1932, in Traverse City, and attended Traverse City Schools.
      Terry moved to California in the late 1950s where he was a sales representative for Thermador Corporation for 25 years. The past few years, he was sales director for Micro-Trim Corporation, retiring recently.
      Terry is survived by his wife, Doreen, his mother, Josephine; daughters, Patty and Connie; sons, Butch, Shane, Dennis, James, Michael, Joe, and Rusty; his sister, Sue; and brothers, Ted and Russ.
      Terry was preceded in death by his father, "Rusty" in 1968.
      Those who knew him will remember Terry's humor, quick wit, and music with a smile and warm thoughts.

      Ray Spencer Swan
      Died November 25, 2001
      TRAVERSE CITY - Ray Spencer Swan, 86, of Acme, passed away on Sunday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Oct. 7, 1915, in Traverse City, Ray was the son of Lee and Stella (Burns) Swan. He married the former Rhea Mae Lautner on Sept. 4, 1938, in Traverse City.
      Ray graduated from Traverse City High School in 1936 and was a lifelong resident of the area. Prior to his retirement, Ray had been employed by Montgomery Ward for 45 years, and was service manager for over 30 years. He also was an Eagle Scout, a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge F & AM #222 and was a member of the Cherryland Amateur Radio Club. He loved the outdoors, was an avid deer hunter and fly fisherman. He also enjoyed square dancing with his wife, Rhea and skiing.
      Ray is survived by his wife, Rhea; a daughter, Barbara Zue of Seattle; a son, Richard of Reno, Nev. and a brother, Leo of San Bernardino, Calif. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Bruce Zue and Debbie (Tom) Rossman, both of Seattle, Brian (Connie) Zue of Traverse City, Sarah Swan of Portland, Ore. and Stephen Swan of Reno, Nev.; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      Ray was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Otto; and by his son-in-law, Dick Zue.
      Ray was a loving husband and was dearly loved by his family. He was generous with his love and with the time he spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with the Rev. Father Edwin Thome officiating.
      Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday and will continue until the time of the service.
