November 29, 2001ObituariesEileen Mary HippleDied November 26, 2001 TRAVERSE CITY - Eileen Mary Hipple, 85, died Monday at her home. Eileen was born Nov. 2, 1916, in East Pittsburgh, Pa., the daughter of James E. and Susan (McGuigan) McIlroy and had made her home in Traverse City since 1986. She married John Hipple in 1940 and he preceded her in death. Her greatest joy was being a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother and friend. Eileen is survived by her family; son, James (wife, Heidi) of Lexington, Mass., and their children, Annika, Andreas and Thomas; son, Robert (wife, Dana) of Park City, Utah, and their children Christine, David and Nicole; daughter, Susan (husband, Robert) Kuras, of Glen Arbor and their children, Molly, Peter and James; and son, Jeffrey (wife, Catherine) of Moorestown, N.J., and their children, Jay, Jane, Andrew and Caroline. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Catholic Church with The Rev. Father William Lipscomb officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Columbarium of Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Hipple Memorial Garden, The Child Guidance Center, or to St. Francis Church. Envelopes are available from the funeral home. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Doris May Pettengill Died November 26, 2001 INTERLOCHEN - Doris May Pettengill, 73, of Interlochen, passed away on Monday at her home. Doris was born in Flint on Aug. 14, 1928, the daughter of William and Lena (McCloskey) Adophi. Doris was an avid quilter who enjoyed sharing her love of the craft with others. In 1987, she founded the local quilt group, "Rumpled Quilts Kin," and her quilts won numerous awards at local shows and fairs. Her survivors include her son, Ronald (Jane) Martin of Kalkaska; daughters, Christine (Mike) Croker of Buford, Ga., and Tomi (David) Newcombe of Big Rapids; nine grandchildren, Trisha, Katie, Victoria, Brett, Brittany, Scott, Kimberly, Ronda and Shannon; one great-granddaughter, Kayla; and her brother, William (Norma) Adophi of Denver. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton "Bud" Pettengill in 1981. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Nash-Pettengill Cemetery, County Road 669, Maple City. Arrangements were by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. EARL "JAKE" JACOBS, 79, of Traverse City, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at his home. KATHY SMITH, 44, of Onekama, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Born Nov. 24, 1957, in Manistee. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee. Arrangements are being handled by Johnson Funeral Home, P.C., 480 Water St., Manistee, MI 49660. JOHN K. COGGER, 79, of Pierport, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001. Arrangements are pending at the Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home of Bear Lake. SALLY V. KUBIAK, 86, of Manistee, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Herbert Funeral Home, P.C. in Manistee. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will be in the Mount Carmel Cemetery on Saturday in Manistee. WALTER JOSEPH KALCHIK, 66, of Suttons Bay, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at his home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Church in Northport. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena. Arrangements are being handled by the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. ABRAHAM BASSIL, 84, of Bellaire, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Country Haven AFC in Atwood. He was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Detroit. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes where friends may begin calling one hour prior to time of service. RICHARD "DICK" MARTIN, 68, of Interlochen, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at the Veterans Hospital in Saginaw. Cremation has taken place and a family memorial service will be held in the spring of 2002. Donna Estella Behm Died November 27, 2001 SUTTONS BAY - Donna Estella Behm, 69, of Suttons Bay, died on Tuesday at the Leelanau Memorial Health Center. She was born on Oct. 12, 1931, in Suttons Bay, the daughter of Henry and Fern (Priest) Behm. Donna was a member of the Suttons Bay Congregational Church. She is survived by her sister, Fern Behm Walter of Suttons Bay; nephew, Larry Walter of Suttons Bay; and special great-niece, Kimberley. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Raymond. Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. James Beadle officiating. Burial will be in the Keswick Maple Grove Cemetery. Joseph F. "Sonny" Maas, Jr. Died November 27, 2001 OSCODA - Joseph F. "Sonny" Maas, Jr., 64, of Oscoda, formerly of Mt. Clemens, died Tuesday at home. Born Nov. 27, 1936, in Mt. Clemens, he was the son of Joseph F. and Lillian (Goeschel) Maas, Sr. Sonny was a 1956 graduate of Mt. Clemens High School and was employed as a supervisor/engineer for Michigan Bell Telephone Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Elks Club in Oscoda, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his children, David (Sarah) Maas of Mt. Clemens, Julie (David) DeLeeuw of Midland, Stephen (Karen) Maas of Traverse City, Michael (Jodi) Maas of Traverse City; his mother, Lillian Maas of Mt. Clemens; wife of 30 years and mother of Stephen and Michael, Jane Maas; sisters, Gloria Driscoll of Shelby Township, Carol (Maurice) Morrissette of Clinton Township; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; and his brother, John Maas. Visitation will be at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Pletcher officiating. Burial will be in Greenbriar Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Lung Association. **PHOTO** Ruth Eva Girocco Died November 22, 2001 TRAVERSE CITY - Ruth Eva Girocco, a longtime Traverse City resident and beloved wife of the late Michigan State Policeman John V. Girocco, passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day at age 89 in Walnut Creek, Calif. She lived in Traverse City from 1956 to 1996 during which time she was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program. She is survived by her daughters, Janice Von Loh of Parker, Colo. and Joni Gardner of Oakland, Calif. |
